First panellist for our next Community Exchange: @antoniafrancisx

When I first met Antonia through @finesseforeva event production course, where she was working at the time, one of the main things that stood out to me was her presence.

She was still very young, and she was never someone who needed to be the loudest person in the room or constantly make herself the centre of attention. But whenever she spoke, people listened. You could tell very early on that she knew where she wanted to go and, even then, it felt pretty obvious that she was going to do big things.

Since then, I’ve watched her keep building. From managing creatives to gaining experience across @warnermusicuk , @universalmusicgroup and @smallgreenshoots , receiving mentoring from @djsemtex, and eventually joining @mixtapemadness as an intern before progressing into her current role as an A&R.

So it genuinely feels full circle to now have Antonia joining us as the first panellist we’re introducing for the next Split60 Community Exchange.

Really looking forward to having her in the room and hearing her perspective on artist development, A&Ring and everything she’s learnt along the way.

📎Casual Reader’s first Library Pick of November is Assata: An Autobiography by Assata Shakur📎

📆: Thursday 5th November
📌: On Road, Hackney Downs

we asked for your help selecting this months first book and Assata’s autobiography was the most voted!

there are some books you just know you have to read and this is one of them, an absolute vital classic. we can’t wait to read and discuss with you all. a reminder that On Road hosts are more intimate discussion, so everyone is somewhat in the hot seat and able to contribute fully to the discussion, if that sounds like your cup of tea, pull up.

about the book:

In 2013 Assata Shakur, founding member of the Black Liberation Army, former Black Panther and godmother of Tupac Shakur, became the first ever woman to make the FBI’s most wanted terrorist list.

Assata Shakur’s trial and conviction for the murder of a white state trooper in the spring of 1973 divided America. Her case quickly became emblematic of race relations and police brutality in the USA. While Assata’s detractors continue to label her a ruthless killer, her defenders cite her as the victim of a systematic, racist campaign to criminalize and suppress black nationalist organizations.

This intensely personal and political autobiography reveals a sensitive and gifted woman. With wit and candour Assata recounts the formative experiences that led her to embrace a life of activism. With pained awareness she portrays the strengths, weaknesses and eventual demise of black and white revolutionary groups at the hands of the state. A major contribution to the history of black liberation.
