A little set of mismatched bedside tables 🩶

Step by step:
- Grab a set of solid timber bedsides
- Give them a good clean with a degreaser
- Strip the top and base
- Sand those areas 120>180 >240 grit
- Scuff sand the body
- Prime + paint (I used “Soft Black” by @wiseowlpaint available @furniturepaintshopaustralia )
- Paint wash + seal
- Add new hardware

Stripping isn’t for everyone, but it’s my go-to method for removing an old finish.

It’s quick, and also so satisfying watching it bubble up and scrape off.

3 tips for stripping:

1. Brush on a generous amount. A thick layer prevents it from drying out.
2. If it does dry out, just go over it with another thin layer and scrape it off not long after.
3. Make sure you remove any stripper residue before sanding.

Always follow the safety instructions on the product you’re using*

I haven’t done a raw timber look in such a long time and it’s still by far my favourite for 3 reasons.

1. Low cost
To make a paint wash, you literally need a couple of tablespoons of paint and some water. That’s it.
2. They typically sell quicker in my area
Although Marketplace is absolutely doing me dirty at the moment. Smh
3. Quick turnaround
This took me 6 hours from start to finish, which means less time spent on the piece and, ultimately, a higher profit margin

You won’t see me passing up on a $30 set of bedsides…

Here’s what I did:
- Clean with a degreaser
- Scuff sand with 180 grit
- Prime and paint in Fauna by @wiseowlpaint
- Sand with 400 grit between each coat
- Make a simple base
- Paint wash & seal
- Add some new hardware

To think how much time I’ve wasted wrapping sanding discs around pretty much anything that would fit and sanding by hand…

These little sanding attachments contour to so many different shapes and make getting into all those awkward details SO much easier.

I’ve linked the ones I use in my bio if you’ve also had just about enough of hand sanding. Sooo good.

This writing desk isn’t something I’d normally go for, but it was sitting in the hard rubbish a few doors down so I thought…why not?

I’m a big fan of @wiseowlpaint OHE. It’s my absolute go-to paint and this colour ‘Dark Forest’, is so lovely. It’s definitely on high rotation at the moment. You can grab it from @furniturepaintshopaustralia

This commission piece was so fun. I always enjoy a natural timber look, and it had been a hot minute since I’d done it.

I went in with a paint wash before sealing, and then bringing back some depth and character with black wax by @dixiebellepaint

I set myself the goal of making all of the gifts I give in 2026. To be fair, I’m pretty slack in the gift giving department, but my niece just turned 4 so I had to do something special.

The only request was unicorns and fairies… naturally.

I’m definitely not a woodworker, but I love giving it a go and there’s something so nice about gifting something I managed to pull together myself.
