Got a fun little setup going. Webcam into a Jetson Orin Nano (think beefy Raspberry Pi with an Nvidia chip onboard) into this old CRT monitor. Running a machine learning script that spawns particles based on movement, so you can see it react as I move around. Loving the retro vibe with AI powered visuals. More experiments coming. by @oohnicetouch

How I reverse-engineer competitor ads in 20 seconds.

Most people would rather give themselves an electric shock than sit alone with their thoughts for fifteen minutes. A real 2014 study proved it. Researchers left people in a room with only a shock button to press, and a huge number of them pressed it. Repeatedly. Just to have something happen.

Boredom has never felt comfortable, and phones have handed us a permanent way out. Check messages, scroll, look busy. Finish a piece of work and go straight to the next task before the last one has even settled.

But the best ideas don't show up while you're chasing them. There's a network in your brain, the default mode network, that only switches on when your attention isn't pointed at anything specific. It's why the shower thought arrives, or the idea on a walk long after you've stopped trying to solve it.

Video editors live inside this problem every day. When every hour goes on the mechanical parts, organising footage, building stringouts, clearing admin, there's no unfilled moment left for the thinking that actually makes an edit good.

You're not making eye contact with me right now. You're looking at pixels on a screen. Your brain doesn't know the difference.

There's a neural pathway built entirely to detect eye contact. It fires before conscious thought and decides whether a face feels real.

Documentary makers figured this out in the 1950s, long before smartphones existed. Every newsreader since has used it. Every creator now does the same thing, often without knowing why.

After every shift, the amount of footage being created went up. The variety went up. The number of people who needed to edit went up.

But the edit itself, the actual work of going from raw footage to finished story, never got faster.

That constraint has stayed in place through all of it.

YouTube launched in 2005. Instagram in 2010. TikTok in 2016.

Suddenly there was a real audience for almost anything. Any niche, any format, any length. And critically, there was money attached to that audience. Brands that had never needed to think seriously about video had to. Every company selling anything had to become a media operation or risk losing to competitors who were.

The demand for video content scaled beyond what traditional production could satisfy.

A Canon 5D Mark II launched in 2008 at $3,000. A top-of-the-line Sony cinema camera at the time cost a quarter of a million, without lenses.

At the same time, laptops became powerful enough to edit what had previously required a dedicated suite costing tens of thousands. Student films. Indie productions. Individual filmmakers working alone, producing work that looked genuinely professional.

The barrier between having a story and being able to tell it properly had collapsed.
