Sally Scopa third Oolong solo opens 09/09

Image detail of a new painting over stereo-card

Oolong Gallery presents

Sally Scopa Ready for the Ceremony

Sept 9 – Oct 25 ‎ 2026 ‎‎

Opening Reception 09/09 6–8 pm
Tribeca Gallery Night Wednesday

Oolong Gallery⠀
4 Cortlandt Alley
New York ‎ NY 10013

“A show of small paintings over stereocard (nineteenth-century paper slides of paired photographs that appear to form a 3D image when viewed through a stereoscope) presented to us like small jewels—busy pointillist dreamscapes in pink, yellow, and blue that totally obscured the underlying pair of photographs. It seemed no coincidence that many of the compositions mimicked the multicolor petri dish of dots that form Ishihara color blindness tests, drawing connections to the imperfect mechanics of human vision.”

—recent SF highlight in Art Forum by Bryan Barcena w/ Andrew Berardini

Sally Scopa is a painter based in Bellingham, Washington, where she runs Queen Projects: a project space in downtown Bellingham supporting artists based in the Pacific Northwest.

She has been awarded residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (Madison, ME), MASS MoCA (North Adams, MA), the Cité internationale des arts (Paris, France) and SOMA (Mexico City, Mexico). Recent shows include solos with Bass & Reiner Gallery (San Francisco, CA) and Oolong Gallery (Rancho Santa Fe, CA). Recent fair presentations include Nada Miami Solo (2024) and Felix Art Fair, Los Angeles (2026), both presented by Oolong Gallery. She has participated in group exhibitions at El Museo de la Ciudad (Querétaro, MX), 550 Gallery (New York), Ladies’ Room LA (Los Angeles) and Radio28 (Mexico City).

Scopa holds a BA in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard University and an MFA in Art Practice from Stanford University. Her work has been featured in a variety of publications including Artforum, Variable West, New American Paintings and KQED.

Excerpt:

Q: What is exciting about the grant from LYRA Foundation? And why is this partnership between LYRA and ICA SF so special? How will the LYRA grant benefit the museum and the broader art community?

LYRA Foundation’s support is game-changing. It allows us to commit to ambitious, large-scale commissions and long-term collaborations with artists. This partnership is special because it’s rooted in shared values: curiosity, experimentation, and a belief in the power of contemporary art to challenge, illuminate, and inspire. Beyond the museum, the LYRA grant uplifts the broader arts ecosystem of San Francisco by investing in curatorial labor and artist-led innovation. taken in Oolong Gallery by @oolongallery

1st retained caption in the batch, telling a story of the quirky courtship, a wedding proposal, ceremony, and vision of the future — a testament to love and life partnership in the form of a stereograph card series Sally Scopa painted over, besides the captions.

two paintings on linen by Sally Scopa

Sally Scopa
Mountain Couple I & II, 2024
Acrylic on linen
18 x 24 in each
61 x 46 cm

Past work exhibited at Oolong Gallery in California that connects to our current 3rd solo presentation by Sally Scopa ‘Ready for the Ceremony’ on view through Oct 25:

“Mountain Couple is about bodies marking time both alone and within a pair, within a specific natural terrain. The paintings are at once portraits of a landscape and portraits of an inner life in which geological activities such as erosion, settling and eruption take on new meaning. The paintings bridge landscape and portrait, micro and macro. They are hard-edged, but also wrinkled and layered.”

“A few years ago, I started thinking a lot about what it means to grow old with someone, to sort of settle into one another like rocky strata, and to actually become one person, embedded in a place together. Sustaining love over time but also taking things one day at a time.”

The 25 Stages From Courtship to Marriage

New framed paintings over stereograph card (24) in Ready for the Ceremony at Oolong Gallery
In sequential narrative order with original card captions (7.5” x 11” framed)

📍4 Cortlandt Alley NY, NY 10013 | Mon–Sat 10-6pm

After Hours Tribeca Gallery Night
Fri Sep 25 from 6-9pm

Artist Talk with Guest Moderator tba
Sat Oct 3 from 1-3pm

“I love that many stereographs are captioned with text, and the tension I can create by covering over the original image with my own while leaving the caption visible. The cards in Ready for the Ceremony were printed in 1905, and come from an incomplete set of stereographs showing “The 25 Stages From Courtship to Marriage” of a Victorian-era couple.

I think about how one form of image-making can exist like a barnacle upon or within another form, and how paintings can be like interlopers in other technologies. Though the captions on each piece in this series are about a couple approaching their wedding day, I wasn’t thinking much about romantic marriage when making the work; rather, I was thinking about how to reconcile or join together two different, seemingly incompatible views of the world.”
