Australian opal has a way of drawing the eye, even in its most delicate form. ✨

Against a fine gold chain, flashes of blue, green and gold become the detail that brings the whole look together.

For an October birthday, opal makes the choice feel that little bit more personal, while still being a piece to reach for long after the celebration.

This one-of-a-kind Australian opal pendant has now been sold.

For October’s birthstone, the design begins with what nature has already created. ✨

In this glimpse behind the making of “Blue Symphony”, Dr Renata Bernard (@renata.bernard.om) works around an exceptional 4.97ct Australian dark boulder opal from Winton, Queensland.

Natural opals do not arrive in predetermined shapes. Their contours, proportions and play-of-colour are entirely their own, which means every line of the setting must respond to the individual gemstone.

As a GIA gemmologist, NCJV valuer and jewellery designer, Renata considers the opal from every angle before refining the design around it.

For “Blue Symphony”, the result is an 18K yellow gold setting with diamonds that follows the gemstone’s natural form while allowing its shifting colour to remain unmistakably at the centre.

This is October birthstone jewellery created without a template, around an Australian opal that can never be repeated.

There are moments when art becomes the only language that comes close. ✨

At the heart of “Newton’s Attraction” is an extraordinary 9.12ct natural Australian black boulder opal from Winton, Queensland, remarkable for the clarity, intensity and almost electric layering of its play-of-colour.

Within the gemstone, saturated blues and greens appear to move across one another, interrupted by flashes of incandescent colour. It calls to mind the restless skies and heightened palette of Van Gogh’s years at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, yet even that comparison seems inadequate.

No painter could place these colours precisely where they appear. No hand could reproduce their depth, movement or changing relationship with light.

Nature created this composition once.

#oneofakindjewelry #rarejewellery #australianmade #wintonopal #statementpendant

As October’s birthstone, opal is often chosen for its meaning. At this level, however, it enters another realm entirely: a gemstone for the serious collector, where rarity, artistry and natural brilliance become inseparable.

Dr Renata Bernard (@renata.bernard.om) designed “Newton’s Attraction” around that extraordinary natural composition, suspending the opal within gold and diamonds without competing with what was already there.

A jewel of this calibre is not simply one of a kind. The particular convergence of clarity, pattern, colour and depth within this gemstone is something that cannot be commissioned, repeated or recreated.

Mother Nature remains the ultimate artist.

October belongs to opal. ✨

And there could hardly be a more extraordinary way to begin.

This Australian opal reveals an exceptionally rare Chinese writing pattern, its markings appearing almost like a mysterious script written within the gemstone itself.

At this scale, combined with its chameleonic play-of-colour, it is virtually impossible to match. We had never encountered another quite like it before, and we do not expect to see its equal again.

That is the wonder of truly exceptional Australian opal. Its story is already contained within the stone, created once by nature, yet somehow it continues to speak differently to everyone who comes close enough to experience it.

This remarkable ring has now been sold and belongs to one fortunate collector.

A fitting beginning to October, the month in which we celebrate the extraordinary rarity, individuality and beauty of opal. ❤️

From mine to jewel is only meaningful when excellence is pursued at every step. ✨

For John and Dr Renata Bernard, working with Australian opal has never simply been a matter of mining a gemstone and designing something around it.

John acquired the Jundah-Opalville mines because of what he believed they were capable of producing: exceptional boulder opals from some of Queensland’s most remote and demanding country. Finding them is difficult. That is precisely why the discoveries can be so extraordinary.

Renata approaches each of those opals with the same uncompromising attention.

A GIA gemmologist, jewellery designer and qualified valuer, she does not begin with a predetermined design and ask an opal to fit it. She studies the gemstone, questions its proportions, colour, movement and character, and searches for the aesthetic expression that allows that particular opal to say everything it has to say.

No gemstone is treated as insignificant. Whether modest or museum-worthy, each deserves the same pursuit of balance, craftsmanship and integrity.

That philosophy has shaped Opal Minded for decades.

Not simply mining and designing Australian opals, but seeking to reveal the very best of each one, from the earth to the finished jewel.

October’s birthstone, with a little more drama. ✨

“The Rite of Spring” takes its name from Stravinsky’s famously daring ballet, a work so radical that its 1913 Paris premiere became legendary.

At its centre is a 4.47ct natural Australian black opal from Lightning Ridge, alive with intense green play-of-colour that shifts across the gemstone with every movement.

The dark body tone of black opal gives those colours extraordinary depth and brilliance, creating the kind of contrast that is almost impossible to ignore.

Dr Renata Bernard (@renata.bernard.om) set the opal in 18K yellow gold and finished the design with a sculptural crown of diamonds, allowing the gemstone’s energy to remain unmistakably at the centre.

For October, the month of opal, “The Rite of Spring” is a reminder that a birthstone can be far more than sentimental. It can be bold, expressive and entirely individual.

A jewel for the collector who has already seen almost everything. ✨

At the heart of “Love in White” is an extraordinary 67.32ct natural white boulder pipe opal from our Jundah-Opalville mines, a gemstone of a scale, cleanliness and quality we had not encountered before and have not seen repeated since.

Its immaculate pale body carries an ethereal play-of-colour that shifts across the surface with light and movement. At this size and calibre, it is not simply rare. It represents the kind of natural occurrence that even an experienced collector may never have the opportunity to encounter again.

Discovered by John Bernard and interpreted by Dr Renata Bernard (@renata.bernard.om), the opal is set in sculptural 18K rose gold with diamonds, with an enhancer allowing the jewel to be worn in different ways.

#sydneyjeweller #highjewellerydream #oneofakindjewellery #opaljewellery #diamondjewellery

The versatility is an ingenious detail. The real privilege is the gemstone itself.

“Love in White” was created as a symbol of unconditional love, but it is equally a testament to something Mother Nature created once and may never choose to repeat.

A collector’s jewel in the truest sense, accompanied by an equally remarkable matching opal ring.

A discovery that has never been repeated. ✨

“Love in White” centres an extraordinary 27.56ct white boulder opal from our Jundah-Opalville mines, remarkable not only for its scale, but for its exceptional purity and immaculate appearance.

White boulder opals of this size and quality had never been found there before, and none comparable have emerged since.

Its pale body reveals delicate flashes of rainbow play-of-colour as the gemstone moves, creating an almost luminous presence that draws curious eyes whenever it is displayed.

Discovered by John Bernard and transformed by Dr Renata Bernard (@renata.bernard.om) into an important one-of-a-kind jewel, the opal is set in 18K yellow gold and surrounded by diamonds, with every element designed to honour the rarity of the gemstone itself.

Eleven Australian opals, brought together in one extraordinary composition. ✨

At the centre of “Opal Daisy Dream” is a superb natural Australian black opal from Lightning Ridge, surrounded by ten luminous crystal opals from Coober Pedy.

Bringing together this many natural opals in a single jewel is far more complex than the finished ring suggests. Each gemstone forms independently, with its own colour, transparency, pattern and play-of-colour. Creating balance between them requires an exceptional eye.

And when eleven individual opals come together this beautifully, the result can feel almost destined.

Dr Renata Bernard (@renata.bernard.om) transformed that rare gathering into a floral composition of 18K white and yellow gold, illuminated by 190 diamonds.

For October, the month of opal, it is an extraordinary expression of the birthstone: eleven gemstones, each created once by Mother Nature, brought together in remarkable harmony.

Swipe to see the scale and presence of “Opal Daisy Dream” on the hand.

#octoberbirthday #raregemstone #oneofakindjewellery #sydneyjewellery #therockssydney

On the hand, “Opal Daisy Dream” reveals the full ambition of its design.

The deep character of the Lightning Ridge black opal anchors the composition, while ten Coober Pedy crystal opals radiate around it, their individual flashes of colour amplified by 190 diamonds.

Two celebrated Australian opal fields. Eleven natural gemstones. The achievement lies in finding opals of exceptional quality, colour, proportion and character that can share a single composition without compromise.

Reaching that level of balance takes time, judgement and access to remarkable material, making the opportunity to create a jewel of this complexity a privilege in itself.

Part of the Dream Collection, this one-of-a-kind October birthstone ring was created by Dr Renata Bernard to mark significant moments and, ultimately, to become an heirloom.

This phenomenal ring has since been acquired by a private collector.

The finest opal earrings do not begin with identical stones. They begin with two extraordinary gemstones rare enough to belong together. ✨

Within “Purple Quartet”, two substantial Australian dark boulder opals from Winton become this remarkable pair of high jewellery earrings.

Each opal has its own proportions, pattern and movement of colour, yet their vivid blues, flashes of red and extraordinary depth create a visual affinity that is exceptionally difficult to find in natural opal.

That distinction matters. Australian opals cannot be ordered in pairs or recreated to specification. To find two gemstones of this calibre that can hold their individuality while achieving such harmony is itself a collector-level rarity.

Dr Renata Bernard (@renata.bernard.om) framed them in sculptural 18K gold and diamonds, allowing the opals to remain the commanding presence of the design.

And these earrings are only one expression of “Purple Quartet”, the 47.33ct transformer jewel in which four remarkable boulder opals come together as a necklace, pendant, earrings and ring.

Swipe to see three expressions of “Purple Quartet” come together in one extraordinary look.

For the serious collector, the ingenuity is extraordinary. The opals are rarer still.

Four Australian opals. One extraordinary coincidence of nature. ✨

“Purple Quartet” brings together four exceptional dark boulder opals from Winton, totalling 47.33ct.

Each opal formed independently, with its own colour, pattern and proportions. Finding four gemstones of this calibre with such remarkable visual harmony is extraordinarily rare.

Dr Renata Bernard (@renata.bernard.om) transformed that rarity into a work of high jewellery in 18K gold and diamonds, designed to become a necklace, pendant, earrings and ring.

The transformation is ingenious. The greater wonder is that these four opals could be brought together at all.

Opal, October’s birthstone, has long been associated with hope, love and good fortune. “Purple Quartet” reveals just how extraordinary that birthstone can become when nature produces something truly exceptional.

Swipe through to discover its different forms.
