Long Distance Relationship
ā€œCrossing the million-mile mark remains one of the few major goals left for Thalmann, but there’s one thing that needs fixing before that happens: the odometer. Flipping the readout to kilometers out of sheer curiosity has uncovered a glitch—it’s stuck fast at 999,999.ā€

Long Distance Relationship
ā€œSome 996 Turbos have been so cherished as to be barely driven. Others have wracked up mighty mileage over the last quarter century and show no signs of stopping. Two such examples, uncannily similar yet with entirely divergent histories, shine a light on the paradoxical nature of this versatile, evergreen, undeniable sports car.ā€

It was a real pleasure and unique opportunity to meet @openinanewtab of @000magazine, whose beautiful black 968 you can see next to my car in this lineup. I think it’s awesome to have such top notch representation at @944fest! Check out his page, he took some amazing photos and wrote some great blogs on the days spent at Fest.

Postcards from our 911 GT3 S/C road test

ā€œThe loopā€ is a setting well-suited for evaluating the work of product planners and engineers, one that revealed key differences between the ostensibly similar 992.1-based 911 GT3 and 911 S/T for Issue 029. Price is irrelevant here, on winding roads that lay a sports car’s advantages and disadvantages bare—from its tires and tire-temperature monitors to its seats, sightlines, and far more. The loop measures the immeasurables a spec sheet can’t, those tangible intangibles that determine whether a sports car is intrinsically fun or its experience is derailed by compromises and distractions.

This test was different, though, with a peek at the rearview mirror revealing two newcomers. One is a bright red 911 GT3 S/C, for ā€œSport Cabriolet,ā€ fresh from its world debut. The other is the unmistakable mug at its wheel—that of @ap_andypreuninger, who leads road-car development for Porsche Motorsport…

Subscribe today to get our full impressions of the new S/C in our upcoming Fall 2026 magazine (Issue 039).

Outtakes from @944fest

What an incredible weekend at @virnow. After getting the 968 sorted at @rttuning, I drove down solo, having only exchanged a handful of messages with @redroofgarage about attending. I wouldn’t know anyone there, but 944Fest claimed in big capital letters, ā€œRoll in as a stranger, roll out with a hundred new friends.ā€

I arrived early and tried my best extroverted impression to introduce myself to anyone who came passing by. Most arrived like me: soaking wet from not having functioning A/C in 100°F+ weather. Others nursed gremlins and pulled tools out in the parking lot. Spare parts came out of hatches. Cold waters were exchanged. It was an immediate bonding experience.

The rest of the weekend followed suit, and although the Porsche community at large has been one of the most accepting to newcomers, the transaxle crowd is, by far, one of the most welcoming. It mattered very little what you did for a living, whether you’d ever heard of the word Sonderwunsch, or if you even brought a transaxle car to the event. What mattered was that you were there, and that immediately made you part of the family.

Four days and 1,100 miles later, I’m still touched by how many wonderful people I met and just how well this 34-year-old car performed—especially the new @astmotonsuspension 1-ways, which were both incredibly sharp and compliant on our road rally—though I do believe it’s time to track down a new alternator! 🫣

Thank you to everyone for making me feel so welcome. See you next year. taken in VIRginia International Raceway by @openinanewtab

50 Years of Transaxle

The anniversary was as good a reason as any to get the 968 sorted and over to its first @944fest, which coincidentally is also celebrating a milestone of its own: 25 years of building a very specific community of Porsches. Today, it’s the world’s largest gathering of transaxles—the 924, 944, 951, 968, and 928—in the world.

With some coercing from @t2996420, I drove the 968 800 miles east after our @pikespeakhillclimb road trip. Thankfully, all the typical things under the hood had already been sorted by @mpcars in Chicago, including some much-welcomed cooling upgrades from @csf_radiators, but there was still plenty to refurbish before making the trek to 944 Fest.

Last week, the car visited @rttuning in Pennsylvania to get the car properly sorted. In went a set of incredible @astmotonsuspension 1-way coilovers, @powerflexusa control arm and spring plate bushings, and new axles from @944online. While the car was in the air, @porschewarrington got new Michelin tires mounted on the Cup 2s and sourced new side skirt clips to get them fitting properly again. The final touch was installing some 21mm @hrsprings_na DRM spacers front and rear to get the fitment dialed in.

At 6 AM, I set off for the car’s first real shakedown and nearly eight hours later, I arrived at the @virnow gates with a huge smile on my face. Huge thanks to R/T Tuning for putting in the wrench time, and to Porsche Warrington for your help as always.

I’m so excited to be here for my first 944 Fest. Since starting with @000magazine, I’ve learned so much more about each transaxle platform, and being here, I know I’ll learn a lot more. See everyone soon!

944 Fest prep part II…

After getting a new Blaupunkt Frankfurt head unit installed at @perzanautoradio to replace the old school JVC Kameleon, the next step in @944fest prep was to get the 968 detailed at @diamondcut_detail.

After seeing so many local Porsche enthusiasts visit Colin’s shop, I knew the 968 would be in good hands, but I was unprepared for how quickly he’d be able to bring the depth and shine of the paint back to life.

Thanks for working your magic on this 34-year-old transaxle Porsche, Colin! Onto the next stage of improvements before the drive down to @944fest šŸ‘‹

There have been plenty of these ā€œImposter Syndromeā€ moments in my life, but probably none more caustic than arriving on location to pen my first feature story for @000magazine: a two-day track test of every Cayman GT4 Clubsport—from start to finish.

The test took place at @theconcoursclub, a beautifully appointed and expertly managed private automotive resort just outside of Miami. Manufacturers, accomplished racing pros, and well-heeled pro-ams call this facility home, using its track to dial in their cars and confidence.

Having never driven it before, my confidence was…low. I’d have to acclimate to the track faster than ever, ensuring I reserve enough bandwidth to articulate thoughts, not just for the story I’d eventually write, but for the microphone clipped inside my helmet from @themediastandard, who were there to document the entire test on video.

It was also my first time working alongside the uber-talented 000 pro @clint_davis. I was conscious of being an able hand and resource for him as he worked his magic.

A lot of layers to process as I climbed into a GT4 RS street car to drive a few warm-up laps before the real test would begin.

What followed was virtually a blur—a blend of muscle memory extracted from track days past, an outpouring of Cayman GT4 knowledge I didn’t know I retained, my half-witted attempt at being in front of a camera, and a handful of photos and shorthand notes scribbled into my phone to make sense of later. Between it all was an immense amount of fun, much to the credit of Clint, the Concours Club staff and crew, Porsche SRO pro @yvesbaltas, and The Media Standard team.

I remember calling @pete.stout somewhere in the middle of it all, just to say thank you for the opportunity and trust to be there. 000 is not your average magazine by any means, and although I’d written plenty over the past two decades, it would all pale in comparison to the scrutiny and gravity of anything I’d do inside our pages.

This would end up being one of two features I’d write for Issue 037. Neither will I ever forget. taken in The Concours Club by @openinanewtab

Now that my 968 is with me on the East Coast, it’s been fun to learn about this quirky car.

The 968 was the final chapter in that story and arguably the best of the breed. Unlike its predecessors, the 968 was built alongside its 911 brethren in Zuffenhausen. It was initially slated to be introduced as the 944 S3, but since over 80% of its components were either new—like the VarioCam system (aka Porsche’s VTEC in period) or its 6-speed manual—or significantly revised, the name was eventually changed to 968.

Still, there were plenty of bits that carried over from what Porsche had at the time, and some that lived on in other 911 models.

Truthfully, I never planned to own a 968. My dad’s co-worker had one back in the 1990s, and although I distinctly remember always preferring the equivalent BMW, I found myself spending more time inspecting the 968—trying to understand it as much as a ten-year-old me could.

Now, I have the chance to study, restore, and improve it in earnest—50 years on from when Porsche’s transaxle era began. Life is funny like that.

Before coming east, it’s been to @mpcars to some wrongs, perform a bunch of maintenance under the hood, and fit a fresh heat exchanger and electric fan conversion from @csf_radiators. Some new bits go on next week.

Excited to spend time with more transaxle fans @944fest in a couple of weeks. Anyone else driving down from the East Coast? by @openinanewtab
