BTS photographing two Porsche 996 Turbos for the cover of @000magazine issue 037. One has a staggering 749,811 miles on the odometer, and the other is a newly acquired example with showroom-ready 7,195 miles. It was pure happenstance that our one-day shoot in rural Erwinna, PA included traversing lush dirt backroads, however both drivers were more than eager to illustrate that these cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed.

Big thank you to @t2996420 and @chucksanz for driving their beautiful Porsches to a fun day of shooting.

Toolkits for early air-cooled 911s and 912s 🔧

Once upon a time, every Porsche from the earliest pre-A 356 onward was supplied from new with factory tools that could be used by owners for routine maintenance and emergency repairs. The tools contained in each kit were specific to the year and model of that Porsche, and therefore changed over time.

The factory selected the design of each tool, then outsourced its requirements to various suppliers such as Hazet, Jörg, Messko, and others. Tool bags were delivered to the factory and placed in bins at the end of the assembly line. As the cars neared completion, a line worker filled an empty bag with tools from the parts bins per that model’s prescribed list of contents. The completed kit, along with the spare tire and jack, were then placed in the luggage compartment of the car, thus completing its assembly prior to the final test drive.

Postcards from our 911 GT3 S/C road test

“The loop” is a setting well-suited for evaluating the work of product planners and engineers, one that revealed key differences between the ostensibly similar 992.1-based 911 GT3 and 911 S/T for Issue 029. Price is irrelevant here, on winding roads that lay a sports car’s advantages and disadvantages bare—from its tires and tire-temperature monitors to its seats, sightlines, and far more. The loop measures the immeasurables a spec sheet can’t, those tangible intangibles that determine whether a sports car is intrinsically fun or its experience is derailed by compromises and distractions.

This test was different, though, with a peek at the rearview mirror revealing two newcomers. One is a bright red 911 GT3 S/C, for “Sport Cabriolet,” fresh from its world debut. The other is the unmistakable mug at its wheel—that of @ap_andypreuninger, who leads road-car development for Porsche Motorsport…
