✨Spotlight Sunday!✨
This week, we are featuring a new Napkin (though far from new to Open Mic Napa!), Nick Foxer 🎤 Nick is a full-time local piano entertainer for wineries, hotels, and special events in the Sonoma and Napa area. If you like to venture downtown, you’ve likely heard him playing at the Andaz Hotel more than once 🎹

Nick was born and raised in the vineyards of Sebastopol, CA. Many moons ago he ventured out to St. Paul MN for a songwriting degree, and also spent time in the LA and Nashville music scenes. In addition to originals? Nick plays a variety of iconic feel-good hits from various decades, essentially “wine rock” 🍷🌄

Nick recently moved to Napa and is stoked to be back in the heart of wine country doing what he loves (we are stoked, too 🙌🏼). Catch him at various venues in Napa, including some ✨exclusive✨ song test-runs at Napa Open Mic at Rebel Vintner’s on Mondays 😉

Spotlight Sunday is arriving on a Wednesday this week. In our defense, we are artists. Deadlines were never our strong suit. This week’s spotlight is Evan Mulvaney.
Evan is a mandolin player based in Napa, originally from Woodstock, New York. At the start of this interview, Evan stated that he believes every child should play an instrument, not in a “become a prodigy” way, but in a way where they can understand sound, keep a flexible mind, and hold onto a playful spirit. He’s been making music since 3rd grade and fell in love with it as a teenager. After seven years of viola, the mandolin felt like a natural crossover. He’s been playing it for five years now and hasn’t looked back.
His set moves through a lot of world and folk music: old European tunes, Irish jigs, Sicilian folk, classical pieces, Polish polkas, Beatles covers, and even the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. One of his favorites is Metsäkukkia, a Finnish folk waltz that means “woodland flowers.”
Evan believes music is the universal language of all organisms. He talks about the soul singing through the instrument and the heart singing through whatever piece it’s being asked to play. He also talks about how the sound coming through an instrument moves through a room. It has a physical effect on the people around and helps us stay in touch with our emotions.
He moved back to California about 10 months ago and is looking forward to being part of the music and art scene here again. For him, music isn’t extra. It’s part of a person’s essence.

⚡️Spotlight Sunday… LEO!!⚡️
Born in 2012, Leo began expressing his interest in music on his childhood keyboard 🎹 Leo’s natural inclination for rhythm led him to the drums in 2015, and he would pick up the guitar 8 years later. 🥁 🎸

Leo has had an incredible journey with his music already; he has played in multiple youth bands, participated in music camps and even performs at the local Battle of the Bands with his band, ⚡️Voltage⚡️ who we are so lucky to call regulars at Open Mic Napa! On Monday nights, you’ll hear Leo shredding various instruments throughout the evening, able to pick up on any song and fit right in.

P.S. You may catch him around town on his bike with $15 in his pocket for the taco truck. In addition to music, Leo enjoys art, tennis, baking, and making bike jumps. Come visit us on Mondays from 6-9pm and get to know Leo, his incredible family, and his bandmates!

Last Monday, we held our very first official open mic at the new venue: Rebel Vintners. It was a beautiful evening filled with good music, poetry, heartfelt conversations, and wine.
Art has a way of moving us. Allowing us to feel deeply, see different perspectives, catch a glimpse of someone’s heart, and understand them a little more. I think that’s what’s so beautiful about sharing your art. During the event, I felt incredibly moved by my friends and the community that shows up for one another. In that moment, a poem I wrote a couple of years ago popped into my head, and it felt perfectly fitting. I Want To Remember by Erin

✨SPOTLIGHT SUNDAY✨
Aisha Rivera is the current Napa County Poet Laureate (2023 - Present) ✍🏼 They are also an actor, visual artist, and playwright 🎭 Their poetry can be found in the poetry anthologies “Poetics without Borders” and “Latinas, Gender, Race, and Class…”.

📍They established Napa’s first Poetry Open Mic at Napa Bookmine, which has now moved to Napa Valley Education Foundation near the Oxbow. 👉 Check it out on the last friday of every month from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM!

📣Aisha also advocates for the power of poetry through education, community programming, performance, and more. Aisha believes in the power poetry holds to build community, create social change, and express the wonderful rollercoaster that is the human experience.

Meet the Hosts! ✨For this week’s Spotlight Sunday, I wanted to take a moment to properly introduce myself and my co-host and creative partner, Skyla Rayne.

I started this open mic one year ago after moving from San Francisco to Napa, hoping to recreate the inspiring energy of the open mics I loved attending in the city. I’ve always been deeply passionate about the arts and creative expression. I began piano lessons and joined choir at 5 years old and those early experiences became the foundation for my love of music and self-expression. In 8th grade, an English class introduced me to poetry and writing, which further ignited my passion for the arts.

Beyond creativity, I’m also deeply passionate about building community. In today’s world, I believe it’s more important than ever to stay connected with the people around us.

It was at Barnhouse that I first met Skyla Rayne, a truly talented singer with an undeniable passion for music and community. Our collaboration happened naturally because I saw the same fire in her that I felt for this open mic. In the early days, when turnout was low and things felt discouraging, Skyla was always there encouraging me and bringing positivity. We quickly became a team, and together we continue to grow this open mic. (Fun fact: Skyla is also an English teacher!!)

What began as a monthly event at Barnhouse quickly became weekly due to the incredible response. Today, it has grown into a vibrant community where locals and artists come together to share their work, perform, and connect. It’s become a beautiful outlet for creative expression, performance, and entertainment.
