Freshly unboxed this morning: @martinamartian’s new book! 🫨

It’s full of advice and projects for our favorite pastime, letter writing. Martina shares the anatomy of a beautiful letter, how to create your unique signature and make your own wax seals and envelopes. Her wonderful projects include, but are not limited to:

💌 Stitching an embroidered postcard
💌 Cutting out a cobweb secret message letter
💌 Writing and designing a tiny newspaper to celebrate life’s everyday achievements

Two Journal Meet Ups freshly added to the calendar! We have a cozy Sunday morning and a spooky Saturday afternoon, pick your poison.

We’ll share journal spread ideas, gab with other local journalers, swap supplies and work on our journals all together. Very parallel play 🙂‍↕️

This is a free event not using our Craft Cabinet materials, but you are of course welcome to add that on.

No matter what you use your journal for- writing, junk journaling, scrapbooking, keeping delicious secrets- all are welcome! Bring your journal, bring a friend!

In my class at @opestationery on Tuesday, I asked everyone if it was autumn FOR THEM, like in their hearts. And everyone said yes (even the person visiting from Tennessee, where it’s been 80 degrees!) SO– here is a little fall flyer, ft. new colors and slightly different phrasing because my classes aren’t just writin classes, they are very much writing in community.

If you’ve never come to one before– we brainstorm with the person sitting beside us, we share our writing with our table, we read aloud to the group, we laugh with the group, we clap for each other. It’s pretty special.

We want the bones of our shop to feel lived in and loved. Much more warmth that way! That means almost all the furniture and fixtures— from our counter to our Craft Cabinet— came to us secondhand.

This hutch next to our sticker wall belonged to a lovely woman in Old Orchard. It was originally her grandmother’s, who added the paper roll on the side to write her grocery list. The paper roll came with a note, left for her grandma years and years before.

We, of course, had to keep it! Much more warmth that way.

One of the unbeatable perks of shopping at the little store around the corner: holdin’ stuff 🙂‍↕️

In the shop you can feel the weight of the page in a watercolor notebook, or size up just how much you can really cram into a Soolla bag. You get a proper inspection, to hold something in your hands and feel the craftsmanship.

Take @herwinterflowers. They import a whole mess of fantastic things: writing pads, writing sets, postcard sets, block memo pads, sticker sheets, washi. Everything’s made in Japan, curated to show off wildly talented female illustrators and designers. Stunning to look at in a photo, definitely.

But as soon as you pick up one of their writing pads from the shelf, you notice immediately how delicate and lovely the pages are. You feel what your loved one will be tearing open when they receive your letter in the mail.

I fully recognize the irony of posting a photo and describing this in words. Only one solution to that, I suppose — come to the little store around the corner and see for yourself!

We light up every time we open up mail from y’all.

The hope behind all of this — the hope behind Ope! — is to connect with folks, and help folks connect with each other. That’s in person, and you know good and well that’s through ol’ fashioned snail mail.

We’ve received croissant mail from an old friend in France, we’ve received hand-painted mail from a new friend down the block. Keep ‘em coming, folks!

Write us a letter, we’ll happily write you back. You know where to find us.

Two new activity books for you crafting fiends!

@itsatrinketparty is on a real tear lately with killer new books. We just unpacked their Spooky Season and Sweater Weather Playbooks, which are chock-full of Halloween/Fall collage elements and backgrounds to cut out, plus activities aplenty.

Plus! Also just in, @martinamartian’s Craft & Create. Illustrated buttons, envelopes, frames, stamps, flowers, patterns, cut-out templates for foldable boxes, scraps and postcards.

The weather’s starting to cool, we’re transitioning inside. Perfect time for an trusty activity book 🙂‍↕️

Ope’s open 10-6 today and tomorrow, 10-5 on Sunday. Come say hi!

Two new workshops added to the calendar!

First up, October 15th — Watercolor Illustrated Haiku Workshop!

Led by local artist Abby Kelley, you’ll paint with watercolors to accompany a haiku you’ve written, or one which you feel inspired by.

Your ticket includes an 18-color watercolor paint set and a watercolor paper pad, both of which are yours to take home after the workshop.

And then…

Second, October 20th — Brush Lettering/Modern Calligraphy Beginners Workshop!

Led by local artist and teacher Barbara Farrell, you’ll learn the very basics of modern calligraphy lettering — no experience required!

All supplies will be provided, including a calligraphy brush pen which is yours to take home after the workshop.

Peeking out the window today, I’m seeing perfect Craft Cabinet weather 🌧️

For folks yet to partake, here’s how it works:

We got two big ol’ tables and a cabinet full of supplies at Ope. That’s the dang Craft Cabinet 😤🙂‍↕️

Space is first come, first serve and available anytime we’re open and not hosting a workshop or event.

It’s $10 per hour per person for the first hour, and $5 per hour per person after that. That gets you unlimited use of our work tables and all the materials in the Craft Cabinet!

Bring your scrapbook! Bring your junk journal! Bring a friend! Come hang and craft. We’re open 10-5 this rainy Sunday!
