New collaboration between Botkyrka konsthall and Of Public Interest (OPI) Lab

Botkyrka konsthall and Of Public Interest (OPI) Lab are pleased to announce their collaboration from fall 2026, including hosting two international OPI Lab participants.

Of Public Interest (OPI) Lab is a yearly advanced course for professional practitioners in art, architecture and related fields, held at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm (Kungl. Konsthögskolan), situated in a practice-based research environment in Gröndal. The group of 16 professional practitioners meets ten times over the course of the year, each time for a week-long intensive session in Stockholm.

Botkyrka konsthall, a contemporary municipal run art institution located southwest of central Stockholm, has had an active residency program during the last 15 years in an apartment unit, sponsored by the municipal housing company Botkyrkabyggen. The apartment is located in the neighborhood community of Fittja, with invited contemporary artists participating in a variety of projects. Botkyrka konsthall is now offering the residency accommodation to two international participants of OPI Lab, for use during their monthly intensive sessions. With this collaboration, Botkyrka konsthall and its curator, Maria Elena Guerra Aredal, hope to open up fruitful conversations with the OPI Lab team and its course participants through Fittja’s local fabric.

Artist and professor Jonas Dahlberg, who initiated OPI Lab, and curator Jasmine Hinks, with whom Dahlberg runs the program, are excited about the possibility to foster exchange as well as offer support, in the hope that this brings new practices, approaches and site-responsive projects into dialogue with Fittja and Botkyrka konsthall’s program.

A Day in Lövholmen – explore Lövholmen through 11 (spatial) sketches of public interest
Saturday 6th June, 10:00-17:00
Throughout Lövholmen*

Produced by OPI Lab 2025/2026:
Kenza Benbouchaïb, Alessandra De Mitri, Elise Jensen, Lauren Johnson, Carl Jonsson, Sara Lalmi, Rebecca Mielonen Rothenborg, Kristina Sahleström, Susana Santa-Marta, Francesca Savio, Abbas Sbeity, Bogusława Szlachciak, Claudia Vetrano

*A map of the works will be updated at A Day in Lövholmen’s website (link in bio) and on the day at OPI Lab’s storefront, Gröndalsvägen 1, 117 66.
Metro: Liljeholmen / Tram: Trekanten. Please note there are several steps.

Lövholmen is one of Stockholm’s last remaining industrial areas – a landscape of old paint factories, cement depots, parking lots, construction materials in a moment of pause, fenced off areas of the waterfront, studios for artists and cultural production – all now facing large-scale urban transformation.

A Day in Lövholmen is a one-day event where participants of OPI Lab, a practice-based course in art, architecture and related fields, led by Jonas Dahlberg and Jasmine Hinks through the Royal Institute of Art, present works that engage with this contested site.

A Day in Lövholmen asks: How might what we do now affect what one day will come? Can experimental spatial sketches, prototypes, propositions, and negotiations based on artistic values — taking place in Lövholmen, Gröndal and the surrounding area — become part of rehearsing a reimagined future neighborhood here, or of changing a city somewhere else?

What does it mean to exist and work in a place in a state of pause? Is it possible to grieve the loss of a neighborhood? How much history is it healthy to live with? How can materials from a site can carry information into its future? Where and how is it safe to have a private conversation in public space? What role can beauty or humor play in times of struggle and uncertainty?

Applications for OPI Lab 2026/2027 are open 4 March – 15 April (link in bio)

How can practitioners working in art, architecture and related fields create their own conditions, define their own roles, initiate their own projects, and negotiate values that might be overlooked – or even unwelcome – in contexts where they are often not even invited?

Of Public Interest (OPI) Lab is a yearly advanced course at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, situated in a practice-based research environment. The course is open to international applications from a diverse group of practices: visual artists, architects, landscape architects, curators, cultural producers, policy makers, and other associated fields. The group of 16 professional practitioners meets ten times during the year, each time for a week-long intensive session in Stockholm.

Central to OPI Lab is an interest in our shared living environment and in navigating how to initiate and realize projects where imagination meets critical thought and a genuine interest in how one’s practice meets a place, its context, histories, and publics.

The setting for the ten sessions is a storefront in a residential area in Gröndal, Stockholm. Together with a zoning plan to transform the industrial area on the nearby waterfront into new housing, the neighborhood forms a context and case study – functioning as a container for experimentation. This locality and its proximity to different public(s) form a foundation to develop methodologies and projects in relation to place – applicable to future projects, methods, and practices beyond this specific location.

OPI Lab is developed and directed by artist and professor Jonas Dahlberg and led together with curator and writer Jasmine Hinks as adjunct lecturer. Visit OPI Lab’s storefront at Gröndalsvägen 1, 117 66 Stockholm.

Applications are submitted via the Royal Institute of Art’s website. Link in bio for how to apply!

The Hamrin Foundation, which has distributed more than SEK 350 million to individuals, research groups, institutions and projects since 1985, has chosen to provide financial support for research infrastructure linked to the Of Public Interest (OPI) platform.

The platform, founded and led by KKH professor and visual artist Jonas Dahlberg, aims to initiate and realize projects grounded in artistic values within our living environment.

At 18:30 OPI Lab participant Lauren Johnson has curated a performance by Jaana-Kristiina Alakoski, Cornelia Isaksson, and Runa Alakoski, titled Bang Up My Life. This performative moment in three acts engages guests in the space through two sister-voices, staging multiple positions of overlapping disagreement and dissensus.

Open Door Session
Thursday 4 December, 17:00-20:00

How many conversations can an object hold? How many languages can it speak?

Join us for an evening where we put something on the table.

Food. Drinks. And something we are calling a boundary object. A conversation piece. A container? Something to talk about, around, with, through?
Perhaps in relation to?

As part of ongoing research at OPI Lab, we have been unravelling and reworking the notion of a “boundary object” as a tool for multidisciplinary collaborations – or maybe as a Trojan horse, or a spatial double agent.  What use is it to us?

Join us for a festive Open Door Session with mulled drinks, singing by candlelight and more and find out what we are talking about, and how.
