Applications for OPI Lab 2026/2027 are open
4 March–15 April

How can practitioners working in art, architecture and related fields create their own conditions, define their own roles, initiate their own projects, and negotiate values that might be overlooked – or even unwelcome – in contexts where they are often not even invited?

Of Public Interest (OPI) Lab is a yearly advanced course at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, situated in a practice-based research environment. The course is open to international applications from a diverse group of practices: visual artists, architects, landscape architects, curators, cultural producers, policy makers, and other associated fields.

OPI Lab is developed and directed by artist and professor Jonas Dahlberg and led together with curator and writer Jasmine Hinks as adjunct lecturer.

Visit OPI Lab’s storefront at Gröndalsvägen 1, 117 66 Stockholm.

Applications are submitted via the Royal Institute of Art’s website: kkh.se

I love my sister. I love my friend @corner_stone_93 who people have thought in the past is my sister. I love @lo.etgo The Curator and best support and sweeper in the 'wrestling scene'.

We thought in many ways about disagreement for this work, and it became: an epos, an instruction, a stream of righteousness and a tent filled with dense pauses and longing. We threw in a bath tub cus why not. The title, a mis-rememberance of Chantal Akerman's erratic video work 'Blow Up My Town'.

For @opi_lab Open Door Sessions
15 Jan, 18:30 at OPI Lab storefront, Gröndalsvägen 1, 117 66 Stockholm

Perhaps the low tolerance for disagreement that can be observed in local, global, and medial society today, is what generates accelerating political polarization. Perhaps polarization decelerates said tolerance.

It might also be true — like the epos that will be presented at OPI Open Door Sessions on 15 January suggests — that reductive, rigid, latent and explosive disagreements alike, ultimately manifest a deeper anxiety about the loss of meaningful human interconnection. Would it be hard to disagree if it wasn’t painful to be mentally misaligned with others? Might the art of loving disagreement be forgotten in an increasingly alienated, echo chambered society? When people cannot honourably disagree, disagreements cannot generate synthesis. On the menu is only more disagreement. Progressives stop progressing.

A fragmented, compressed, and condensed epos by Jaana-Kristiina Alakoski, Cornelia Isaksson, and Runa Alakoski will be presented for the night. It will take the shape of three acts of a performance. Shorter than the many lifetimes traditionally required to fill an epic poem, 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗽 𝗠𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 nonetheless presents the viewer with a few important lessons. Its multiple moral positions seep out through two voices which happen to belong to two sisters. These voices could also impersonate two crucial life companions: the self and its greatest ideological opponent.

𝐵𝒶𝓃𝑔 𝒰𝓅 𝑀𝓎 𝐿𝒾𝒻𝑒 and its thinking with conflict finds a natural resonance in the context of OPI Lab, a practice-based research environment and an advanced course at the Royal Institute of Art @kungl.konsthogskolan in Stockholm. OPI Lab centers artistic language in public space and insists that these spaces hold many, especially conflicting, voices and intentions.

The symposium in Stockholm gave new meaning to the concept of Community of Communities, as partners invited their peers to join the discussion.

At the invitation of Precarnia, Illia Todurkin participated in the majority of the symposium programme. Todurkin is an artist from Mariupol who currently lives in Sweden.

At the invitation of Urban Re-Public, Andrii Lusta attended the Sharing Session. Lusta is an artist from Kherson who also currently lives in Sweden. During the sharing session, Yuliia Manukian presented Urban Re-Public’s Kherson Modernism project, which Lusta participated in.

Many friends of BAC and MARC also made essential contributions to the symposium’s success.

⭐ WORK IN FOCUS ⭐

Nina Nowak
Ears to the Ground (2025)
Prototype for a permanent work in public space

Created as part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary project by Nina Nowak (artist), Anna Öberg (dancer/choreographer), JohannesBurström (sound artist), Eftychios Savvidis (architect) Liene Jakobsone (curator, policy maker) for OPI Lab festival 2025 (which took place over 5-7 June), Gröndal Stockholm, SE.

• The project is a score, a sculpture, a choreography, a bench.
• The sounds are based on the site specific sound, transformed and mutated.
• The object is an invitation to get in touch with the surrounding with all senses.

The OPI Lab Festival presents sketches, prototypes and alternative imaginaries developed by participants of OPI Lab, a multidisciplinary laboratory for art, architecture and public making.
