We are heartbroken to share that our son, Sam Silverstein, passed away unexpectedly on July 28th. Sam represented the fourth generation of our family business, carrying on a tradition that began with his great-grandfather in 1911.  Sam was a skilled optician and a natural problem solver—the person we turned to when something couldn’t be made, fixed, adjusted, or figured out. More importantly, he genuinely liked helping people. Many of our customers knew him, trusted him, and loved him. Sam was creative, funny, endlessly curious, and never particularly interested in doing things the conventional way—which probably made Optical Underground a pretty natural place for him. He was looking forward to being a part of the 4th generation to take over the business in the next few years, something he approached with both seriousness and his own quiet, unconventional style … and we were looking forward to that next chapter. We are enormously proud that Sam became part of our family’s 115-year optical story. We just wish his chapter had been much, much longer. We miss our son, our colleague, our brother and our friend.
