Join us for an evening with the wonderful author and illustrator and Mortlake Papers owner Alice Lickens.

Alice is an award-winning author and illustrator, inspired by the odd, lovely and everyday things around her. She was one of the first illustrators in the UK to be chosen for the Sendak Fellowship and her work has been published around the world. Alice has created children’s books How to be a Cowboy and Agents of the Wild and she has worked on projects with the National Trust and Lonely Planet.

Alice is also the founder of Mortlake Papers, where she turns her artwork into playful, eco-friendly stationery.
*
We look forward to hearing about Alice’s illustration work, her creative ideas and her online shop Mortlake Papers. This talk is perfect for anyone interested in expanding the types of illustration work they make. Following the talk there will be an audience Q&A opportunity.

I am doing a virtual talk with the wonderful @orangebeakstudio on November 12th at 7 pm UK time (that’s 12:30 am IST on the 13th for anyone in India). It will be recorded and you will have access to the recording for a week.

I have admired the work Orange Beak does for so long, and it’s an honour to be doing this talk with them. I will chat about my illustration process, how I make difficult books palatable and my inspirations. There will be time for questions too, so ask me anything!

Join us for an evening with award winning author, illustrator and print maker, the fabulous Aditi Anand.
*
Based in Karnal, India, Aditi enjoys working with mixed media and she loves to draw everyday life from observation in her sketchbook. In 2024, she graduated from the MA in Children’s Book Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art, UK and her debut book as both author and illustrator, The Fabric of Us, was published by Walker Books in 2026.

Also in 2024, Aditi won the V&A Illustration Award in the Emerging Illustrator category, the MACBI Printmaking Award, and was the runner-up for the Batsford Prize and the Sebastian Walker Award. In 2023, she won the 'Picture This!' Illustration Competition and was placed third in the Macmillan Prize for Illustration. She was one of the finalists in the 2026 Bologna Children's Book Fair Illustrators Exhibition. Her work has been exhibited across India, the UK, Italy, China and Australia.

We are thrilled to have the brilliant, award-winning Vivien Mildenberger joining us this month.

Vivien's picture books include All In A Drop, Cometchaser and her authorial debut Otto and the Story Tree. Her wonderful illustrations often explore the spooky, fantastical and weird, capturing the imagination of both young and adult audiences.
*
She lives in Nashville, Tennessee, where she works on her paintings, pottery, and powerlifting.
*

Our ever-popular Industry Insights event returns for October. We have the wonderful Charlie Bowden of Pickled Ink Agency alongside the fabulous illustrator, Briony May Smith.

Briony is one of the amazing illustrators represented by Pickled Ink. The Agency was founded by Charlie with an ethos to represent a small and distinct group of authors and illustrators, to nurture relationships and make excellent books.

Briony and Charlie will be talking about their experience of how a successful partnership between agent and illustrator works.

Orange Beak Studio presents an online talk and Q&A with author and illustrator, the brilliant, Tor Freeman
*
We'll be celebrating the publication of Pomona: Stories of the Cat Witch.
*
"Tales of wonder - Tor is one of my favourite artists" Axel Scheffler
*
Tor is an author and illustrator of picture and chapter books. She is a regular contributor to magazines including Mes Premières Belles Histoires, Pomme d'Api and POLLE and has an ongoing strip in the UK weekly story comic, The Phoenix.
*
In 2012 Tor was awarded a Sendak Fellowship and in November 2017 she was the winner of the Observer/Cape/Comica graphic short story prize.
*
Tor’s picture books include The Toucan Brothers, The Book that No One Wanted to Read by Richard Ayoade and Trouble at the Bug Hotel by Kathryn Simmonds. Her all-ages comics include the Boss of the Underworld series, Welcome to Oddleigh and Sister Clawdetta: Murder at the Monastery.

We look forward to hearing about Tor’s newest book, Pomona, fresh off the press last week! Tor will share lots about the making of the book - her inspirations, character design, process and general advice for anyone doing a graphic novel. It is running from Friday 2nd July until Friday 9th July and we are excited to announce we are hosting this years retreat from a new venue. We’re staying in the beautiful countryside of North Yorkshire, in luxury accommodation, with a huge separate working studio space PLUS private chefs, sauna, wild swimming, hot tub and fire pit - what more could you want from a creative week!

The retreat will go on sale before the end of the year, and we’ll update you all soon with the exact on sale date and more.
