A violinist and a doctor dreamed of a backyard escape. A private oasis of their own.

One finds meditation in the garden, while the other finds it in the pool. Together, they each have room to retreat, all within one shared landscape (and let’s not forget the other living beings enjoying alongside).

Would you jump the fence to see what’s behind it? by @orbis_la

Built before the founding of Orbis, the garden at Three Ships was the seed that started it all.

Envisioning an active patio with a non-existent budget, we developed a series of outdoor spaces that utilized reclaimed lumber pulled from construction debris piles, and “found” plant material sourced from neighboring businesses.

Now in this third or fourth iteration, the garden has survived city construction projects, the pandemic, and more. “Found” yuccas, agave, prickly pear, and grasses have been divided and repurposed within. And Brad (Three Ships Owner) has become the landscaper he always wanted to be haha.

This community oriented couple was looking for a garden that would be an isolated escape from public life and would function as an extension of their indoor spaces.

A narrow early 20th century urban lot with a new backyard workshop had approximately 900 square foot remaining for outdoor living.

Introducing flexible seating options around a fire pit and plunge pool encourages year round activities while the isolated grill station keeps the flow through the yard to the workshop open. New “spider free” plantings soften the edges and the small lawn provides plenty of space for dog parties. by @orbis_la

There’s magic in the mundane.

From first bud to flower to fruit to fall the life is in the everyday.

This celebration of seasonal change began with a chance encounter in a coffee shop that led to this full lawn renovation.

This garden for a marine biologist was inspired by phytoplankton in shape and methodology.

By removing the lawn and developing a palette that blends edible plants with local flora this garden celebrates the seasonal life cycles that provide wildlife with food and habitat year round. by @orbis_la
