Here we are as a family of 4 in the @orchard.acre garden a few weeks ago, amongst the cover crops Jonny managed to get sown in late autumn.

Welcoming our second daughter Eryn to our family has been a real rollercoaster. I required the best critical care the 21st century had to offer plus over 6 weeks in hospital, following a massive hemorage several days after her birth. As agreed by many many medical staff my story is a miraculous feet of survival and we are so lucky to be all together. Thankfully Eryn has thrived amid the stormy seas we've navigated these past months, she always seems to have a smile!

Today is the final delivery day for our CSA 2023. Jonny has done an amazing job of continung to run the garden under such difficult circumstances. I want to offer massive gratitude to him and so many in our community for all their love, energy and practical support through this rocky time. @heulwend @lilyredwoodpoet @langtons.farmers @benjy_morgan @pan.makes @pompomcooks @ditchfieldcrafts @rosemarygodfrey920 @angelbakeryabergavenny @shepherdsicecream @grace_rosa_willow @lailah_flash @jamesahudson
to name but just a few. Plus so many NHS staff who work so hard and who can bring light to even the darkest times.

We will be back in the spring with news of our CSA places for 2024, after some much needed winter hibernation.

It was great to host CSA members and other visitors in the garden recently for our Spring Open Day.

It feels like a great time to open the gates and get some good people energy going in the garden, just before we begin our box sceme which starts this thursday!

On the garden tour we talked about our growing methods, namely Organic and No-Dig, the hand scale tools we use, our CSA model and motivations for starting the project and some general veg chat. Thanks to everyone who made it. There will be more opportunities future to visit for those who didn't!

We are happy to share that we have filled all our CSA places for 2023. If you'd like to hear from us about places in future years please email orchardacremarketgarden@gmail.com

This year will be a busy one for us as we are expecting our second child at the beginning of July. Spot the bump hiding behind the salad harvest here!

Photos taken back in late March, what a transformation in the garden since then! We have had some fab help from volunteers through the Our Food 1200 work placement programme which has been a great project for us, especially with the baby on the way.

This Thursday was the first in 6 months we haven't harvested, packed and delivered veg boxes!

Our CSA season has now come to an end. Many thanks to our members, helpers and friends for supporting us in our second year. Our salad will still be avaliable from the @angelbakeryabergavenny until Christmas if you need a fix of fresh leaves!

With the shade from bigger trees and leaves mulching our soil it feels really right for our site and our family life that we enter a time of decomposition, reflection and hibernation over winter. The work never stops completly however, we have already began crop planning, ordering seeds and brainstorming for next season.

It can be tempting to want to tidy the garden at this time of year, but we want to leave as much in place for the wonderful web of life out there as we can. Weeds keep living roots in the soil a key part of soil health, plants seeds provide food for birds, plant matter provides habitat for insects including pollinators and small mamals.

Finally, a massive shout out to all the growers and farmers who do provide good food all year round, we're so grateful for your hard work! @langtons.farmers @paulsveg to name only a few local growers.

Garlic Planting!

Late October/early November is a good time to plant overwintering garlic.

We are planting our biggest bulbs from last year, variety is Valledado a soft neck type. They did very well for us last year, we seem to of been lucky and found a good variety for our soil straight way. It can take some time to find a variety which will grow big in the UK.

As this season comes to an end, it's a great reminder to nourish what we are taking with us from this year, to overwinter and be ready to bear fruits for us next year.

We've just past the first frost date, 10th October for this region, so it feels important to savour the final tender plants before they die off. Nasturtiums are such a worker in the garden, providing forage for bees exotic flowers and nutrituous leaves which can be added to salad.

The last of the tomatoes will also be replaced with the final planting of winter salads later this week.

CSA Harvest Week 15

I am enjoying the shift into late summer, early autum in the garden. Plants are feeling fuller and a more vivid green returns after the long awaited rain. Salad is still a struggle, the drought having knocked out plants which should of been productive for longer, but new beds are coming along nicely.

We are very happy to be including the first apples from our orchard in our shares this week!

Pictured our half share:
Carrots
Kale
Onions
Garlic
Cabbage
Cucumbers
Cherry toms
Apples

Last weekend we feasted, coming together with our CSA members and friends to celebrate Lammas with a Spanish themed feast. At this peak harvest time it felt particular good to recognise and honor the process of gathering in, relishing the diversity and abundance around us, knowing the nights are drawing in and we are moving towards the quieter, more inward time of the year.

Sharing food feels like such an important and nourishing part of deepening community. Thanks to all who came and could share it with us, and we look forward to sharing more time in the garden for whose who couldn't make it some time soon.
