A Residency for Art & Research on Örö, a former military fortress island in the outskirts of the Finnish archipelago.

October Artist Maija Linturi @maijalinturi

"I am a Helsinki-based performance artist and director. At the center of my artistic practice are other-than-human animals, multispecies relations, and questions of collaboration — both with humans and with other-than-human beings."

"In my work, I explore what forms of performance art other-than-human actors propose. The co-creators of my performances have included, among others, dogs, urban rats, a landfill, insects, suburban landscapes, and residents of an animal shelter."

"During my residency at Öres, I will work on site-sensitive and interspecies performance practice."

"The unique environment of Örö will serve, for the month of October, as the stage for 7 Minutes Performance — a year-long performance art project in which I experience a seven-minute interspecies performance every day. Descriptions of the performances can be found at:

https://substack.com/@maijalinturi.

In addition, I will document my time in the residence and the nature of Öres on a daily basis through video recording, field recordings, and diary entries. The accumulated material will serve as the starting point for the process-based performance Saari (working title), which will premiere in 2027. My working partner for the residency will be my canine companion, Vilppu."

Welcome, Maija & Vilppu!

"During our last week on Örö Island, we have been watching and recording the ‘Shifting Light – Valon siirtymiä’. We have observed the changing landscape and the unexpected encounters that arise as the flora and fauna transition into Autumn, coinciding with a significant decrease in daylight hours. This period builds momentum toward the Equinox and follows the Equilux, which is when day and night are approximately equal at 12 hours each, signalling the start of meteorological autumn."

How do you spend a residency on an island where the days keep getting shorter? With sunrise swims, sunset walks and a lot of looking. Two days before the equinox, Rachael Allain and Kaisu Koivisto share their work in progress from Örö:

"I have been responding and adjusting to the ‘Shifting light’/ ‘Valon siirtymiä’ on the island, through an embodied practice using a range of methods and recording devices.
Every day Kaisu and I walk to the east beach for sunrise swims and then to the west beach for the sunset on the horizon.
Watching and experiencing the rapidly decreasing daylight hours as we move towards the Autumn Equinox on 23rd September, when there is equal day and night. I have also been attempting to learn Finnish!"

-Rachael @rachlouall

Kaisu is gathering footage for a video installation, Kimmel/Glimmer, with support from AVEK. The work continues her exploration of Northern environments and their histories.

Koivisto @kaisukoivisto
is a visual artist based in Helsinki. In her installations, she works across photography, drawing, sculpture and video.

From a series of Baltic Blue prints made on the fringes between the land and the water on the southeast coast of the island, on the sandy Solkuro beach/ Solkuron uimapaikka, recording the air and sea temperatures and the fluctuating UV levels.

September Artist Kaisu Koivisto
@kaisukoivisto is a visual artist based in Helsinki. In her installations, she works across photography, drawing, sculpture and video.

Her work is rooted in an exploration of  landscapes, environments, and concepts of nature. She is interested in the dimensions of history, the present, and futures: how quickly things fall into oblivion and decay, and how futures are planned and built.

At Öres Kaisu will work on her video installation Kimmel/Glimmer. The production of it is supported by AVEK.

Rachael Allain is an artist-researcher based in the Southwest, UK. Her practice is shaped through an embodied phenomenological exploration of watery sites, often using artist residencies as methodology. She explores liminal spaces and places, in between the land and bodies of water, working with art and scientific data imaging to reveal invisible realms of our visible world.

Welcome to Öres!

Introducing September Artists in Residence Rachael Allain & Kaisu Koivisto!

Rachael Allain’s and Kaisu Koivisto’s theme for the residency is “Shifting Light – Valon siirtymiä,” focusing on transient moments of change, growth, renewal and fluctuating daylight hours. The island, its histories, and nature are a location in which
our artistic practices meet.

Rachael’s interest in intertidal zones fringing the land, above and below the horizon and the Baltic Sea, meets Kaisu’s long-term inquiry into
abandoned military structures and how nature takes over.

The artists are challenged
and inspired by the phenomenological engagement that can only arise from being physically present in a place and the unexpected explorations that can be realised through an embodied, sensorial, lived experience.

Individual presentations coming soon!

The second week of my residency on Örö, with Koyne Program and Öres Island Residency, has been all about testing, experimenting, and getting to know the materials of the island.

Seaweed, mussel shells, cellulose from trees, and traces left behind by the many species living here have become part of a series of material experiments. Different forms of life seem to coexist across overlapping timelines, leaving traces that somehow communicate with one another.

It’s also been a week of laughter, conversations, and sharing with the other artists in residence. And, of course, some very serious scientific research into how to watch a solar eclipse without permanently destroying our retinas. 🌒👀🤣

Introducing August Artist Daniela Amandolese!

Daniela Amandolese
@amandola.dani is a designer, researcher, and lecturer working at the intersection of biodesign, living materials, and regenerative futures. She is currently a PhD candidate, where her research explores how working with living materials reshapes design processes and relationships between humans and ecological systems. She was also a S+T+ARTS Resident within the MUSAE project, where she developed Growing Futures in collaboration with the Basque BioDesign Center.

During her residency at Örö, Daniela is developing Negotiating with Algae: a site-responsive material practice. The project explores co-design with algae as a living, responsive material system. Moving beyond the control of the material, the process focuses on negotiation, observation, and collaboration with ecological and territorial contexts, through a living archive, material experiments, and site-responsive interventions.

The residency is part of the Koyne Program. The program focuses on the artistic research of biobased, recycled materials and technological processes @koyne.circuit

Meet our resident artist for August!

Giuliana Califano @giuliana.califano.jul
joins Öres to explore the materials and history of Örö Island — creating biodegradable sculptures that speak to the island's ongoing transformation.

Giuliana Califano is an Italian artist, designer, researcher, and educator whose practice combines ceramics, sculpture, biomaterials, and digital fabrication. Through material experimentation, she investigates transformation, impermanence, and the ecological relationships between humans and matter.

During her residency at Öres, she will explore the potential of seaweed and other organic materials collected on Örö Island, combining them into biodegradable sculptural works inspired by the island's unique history. Once a grazing landscape, later a military base under Finnish, Swedish, and Russian forces, and today a protected nature reserve, Örö embodies continuous transformation. Her research seeks to translate these layered histories into sculptural forms while remaining open to the discoveries and changes suggested by the island itself throughout the residency.

The residency is part of the Koyne Program. The program focuses on the artistic research of biobased, recycled materials and technological processes. @koyne.circuit

July Artist Mirimari Väyrynen:
@mirimari.a.vayrynen

"During the residency, I have been working on my new project "Bracketing Landscape" and, since 2022, ongoing project "Landscape Tour by Floating and Swimming".
By these means - floating, swimming, and sitting in distinct places and times of the day- I have discovered some of Örö´s essence and inhabitants' activities.
Besides Örö being generous by offering encounters with storks, eagles, snakes, deer, butterflies, and (the) seal, it has also offered calm time for reading and writing my dissertation."

Mirimari Väyrynen (FI) is Helsinki based painter and an extensive appreciator of nature, different cultures, and narratives of perceiving the world. Väyrynen has studied painting besides Finland in Cuba and Spain.

Through experimentation, and process-orientated or performative-related practices, she explores how painting is formed in social processes and in relation to the environment. Currently, Väyrynen is a PhD candidate at the Uniarts Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki.
