I spent the last weeks of August on Örö Island as part of the ÖRES Artist Residency, with the program organised by Koyne.

There are places where time seems to slow down, and Örö is one of them. Spending a whole month isolated from the noise of everyday life, surrounded by forest, rocks and the sea, was an intense and unusual experience — the kind of time and space that allows you to look, listen and work differently.
The view of the sea, the smell of salt and algae in the air, the sound of the wind and waves, long walks across the island, and the traces left behind by both nature and humans gradually became part of the research itself.

During the residency, I developed ENTANGLEMENTS, a body of sculptures built from the material stratigraphy of the island.
Mussels, algae, branches, bones, pinecones and granite sand were collected alongside human-made remnants: iron, plastic, nails, paper, cardboard and other fragments encountered while exploring Örö.
Crushed, mixed and recomposed into new bio-composites, these materials lose their individual identities and become something else — hybrid traces of overlapping times.
The sculptures can be read as technofossils: fragments of a present that is already becoming the past, but also possible fossils from a future in which natural and human-made matter can no longer be clearly separated.
A small material archive of the island, where centuries, millennia and the present moment become entangled.
And perhaps a reminder that we are not separate from these layers. We are part of them.

The images show a selection of travel bags I’ve sewn over the past few years. I’m currently working on new pieces made with hand-dyed, embroidered, and hand-woven textiles, as well as a collaborative project with @sveta_shuvaeva 🤍

This ongoing project explores the bag as an object between function and memory. It serves simultaneously as a container, a companion, and a personal space of protection. The work is rooted in the idea of travel as a way of collecting impressions, colors, encounters, and stories. Travel photographs often serve as references for the color palettes of the silk bags and their details. Designed to be lightweight and compact, these small handbags can be taken along effortlessly on any journey. A drawstring closure protects their contents, while beads add weight to the ends of the cords. I’m interested in the bag as a vessel for holding things, not only objects, but also memories, longings, and possibilities. Here, travel is understood less as geographical movement than as an ongoing process of discovering, carrying with us, and letting go. Each bag becomes an archive of personal stories, carrying the familiar with us again and again, each time in a new and different way.

The second week of my residency on Örö, with Koyne Program and Öres Island Residency, has been all about testing, experimenting, and getting to know the materials of the island.

Seaweed, mussel shells, cellulose from trees, and traces left behind by the many species living here have become part of a series of material experiments. Different forms of life seem to coexist across overlapping timelines, leaving traces that somehow communicate with one another.

It’s also been a week of laughter, conversations, and sharing with the other artists in residence. And, of course, some very serious scientific research into how to watch a solar eclipse without permanently destroying our retinas. 🌒👀🤣

Immensely grateful to Koyne Program and Öres Island Residency for this incredible opportunity to spend August on Örö Island. A whole month away from the noise, fully immersed in nature and focused on my research.

The island is part of the Finnish Archipelago National Park—just the calm sea, fresh air, and deer grazing right under my window. No city sounds, only the wind and the waves.

My project will explore seaweed and organic residues found on Örö, turning them into biodegradable sculptures. The island's layered past—from military base to nature reserve—inspires a work about transformation and letting the materials guide the process.

Rantaviiva vaihtuu kuivaksi hietikkomaaksi,
ja ilma muuttuu askel askeleelta.

Laukkaneilikka. Hietaneilikka.
Keltasauramo.
Hietikkosara taipuu tuulessa
ja maa tuoksuu kuumalle, kuivalle, hiekalle, etelälle. Uuden ja vanhan vuoden kävyt.

Pysähdyn. Puristan sormien välissä mustia katajanmarjoja —
hartsimainen, kevyen sitrusmainen vivahde, tuttu ja lämmin.
Kangasajuruoho.

Pietaryrtti, jonka kamferimainen tuoksu nousee terävänä ylös. Hieraisen pientä lehteä.

Villin timjamin tuoksu jää sormiin. Ja metsämansikan suuhun.

Äsken oli aurinko, nyt on viileys.
Muutama askel — kokonaan toinen maailma. Saaristometsä sulkee sisäänsä.
Männyn pihka, sammaleet, varjoinen kosteus.

Mietin, olenko tuulen yläpuolella - ja tuulen alapuolella olevat lehmät haistavatkin minut?

Mikä on tuulen suunta. Missä aurinko, missä varjo. Mikä tuoksu tulee tuulen mukana, minkä tuo aurinko. Minkä kosteus sitoo ja minkä vapauttaa.

Ja sitten —
jotain hapanta, pistävää ja kitkerää.
