ā€œIn June, the United States Supreme Court ruled that state goverments’ duty-to-warn laws do not oblige chemical manufacturer Monsanto to disclose a cancer risk on its pesticide labels. Monsanto manufactures the well-known pesticide Roundup that has been the subject of thousands of lawsuits in the U.S. and Canada.ā€œ Learn more in this week’s Organic Bytes newsletter: link in bio by @organicconsumers

Globally, an estimated 46 percent of farmers are victims of unintentional, acute pesticide poisoning every year.

What’s the solution to this problem?

Ban the hazardous pesticides that cause these poisonings, starting with five of the deadliest sold in the U.S.: aldicarb, chlorethoxyfos, ethoprophos, phorate, and terbufos. All five are classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as ā€œextremely hazardous.ā€

Aldicarb alone caused the largest food borne pesticide poisoning in U.S. history. More than 2000 people were made sick from illegally treated watermelons in 1985. This pesticide is still legal on the sweet potatoes many of us eat today at levels the EPA’s own scientists say are unsafe for children.

The September edition of the Regeneration International newsletter is out. 🌱

This month covers a Consumer Reports investigation into regenerative farms in Minnesota and RI founding member Reginaldo Haslett-Marroquin's Salvatierra Farms shows what a truly regenerative system looks like in practice. A new report from the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa finds that 20 years of the Green Revolution in Africa has failed, hunger is up 58% in targeted countries since 2006. Scientists left a farm field alone for 11 years and thousands of orchids appeared. Organic farming is outperforming conventional on profits. And the Green Revolution's failure is being told with its own data.

Plus: the People's Food Summit is coming October 16, World Food Day. A 24-hour virtual journey around the globe celebrating the farmers, researchers, and communities building a different food system from the soil up.

šŸ‚šŸā€œOne of the most valuable things you can do to support pollinators and other invertebrates is to provide them with the shelter they need to survive the winter. Thankfully, that’s pretty easy; all you need to do is do less yard work.

Leaves, brush piles, fallen logs, plant stems, and flower heads might not be growing anymore, but they aren’t trash — they are natural homes for wildlife! A layer of leaves is vital insulation from the cold for the many animals that hide within (or in the soil beneath), like quite a few butterflies. Others, like many native bees, nest within stems, flower heads, or pieces of wood. Throwing out all of your leaves and other plant material isn’t just taking away options for shelter; there’s a good chance you’re tossing out many animals that have already settled in!ā€œšŸšŸ‚

🌽 For generations, corn has been the heartbeat of Mexican culture and diet. It is sacred, sustaining, and woven into the identity and health of the Mexican people. Today, that legacy is under threat, as GMO contamination and toxic pesticides pushed by agribusiness giants like Monsanto-Bayer put native corn varieties at risk.

But a powerful movement is standing its ground. At the forefront is Mercedes López, director of our sister project Vía Orgánica and a key leader in the Demanda Colectiva de Maíz—a landmark legal battle to defend native corn from corporate encroachment. In the face of immense pressure from Big Ag, she and countless others continue to fight for something far bigger than a crop: the right of communities to protect their land, their food, biodiversity and their heritage for generations to come.
