Are you ready for the Nuyorican Poets Cafe’s 53rd Anniversary?

We originally planned to host this year’s Halloween Anniversary celebration at our newly renovated home, but when you’re revamping a nearly two-century old building, delays and unforeseen circumstances are bound to happen. We’re now looking forward to reopening our doors in mid-2027.

In the meantime, some incredible community organizations have stepped up to help us make sure this Halloween celebration is still one for the books! A huge shoutout to @bxmusic, @loisaidainc.center, and all of our participating vendors and collaborators for coming together for a night of remembrance, community, and most importantly, a little fright!

From 3-6PM, families can enjoy Indoor Trick-or-Treating, a Costume Pageant/Open Mic, Bilingual Children’s Story Hour, Face Painting, an Ofrenda Altar by Viajero, Family Portraits, and vendors from local community organizations.

Stick around after 6PM for a theater performance by @TheBobbySanabria & special guests, an Alter Activation Ceremony by Pepe Flores, music by @DasoMonster, @LaBrujaNYC revisiting “Poe-Rican,” and special costume prizes!

Food and alcoholic beverages will also be available for our guests.

While we’re disappointed that we can’t welcome our friends and family back into our home venue just yet, we’re determined to make our 53rd Anniversary a night to remember.

Join us at Bronx Music Hall on October 31st from 3-9PM and be a part of Nuyorican history!

Today I celebrate my 54th birthday, and I can’t help but think about all the amazing people who have made this life journey so special for me—my parents, my children, my wife, my brothers, childhood friends, acquaintances, and family friends who have transitioned to the afterlife. I carry each of you with me.
Today, I especially want to recognize my friend Tito Rolon.

When I first started painting murals on 118th Street, Tito was already putting our block on the map artistically. Titos anti-drug murals incorporated newspaper cartoon characters that became powerful symbols of anti-drug messages throughout our community.

In 1991, Tito and I, along with my mentor Luis Martinez, collaborated on the Drug End All Dreams (D.E.A.D.) mural. That mural marked the beginning of my journey as a muralist in East Harlem.

Thank you, Tito, for being a good friend, a great artist, and an even greater human being. Your contribution to our community and to my own journey will always be a part of my journey.

From his son Alex Rolon.
Tito, loved his community of East Harlem and he fought hard for changes in the 90’s. He expressed this through his artwork with drawings like grim reapers that had a message “Drugs End All Dreams” (D.E.A.D) that acted as a wake up call to drug users or murals that stated “racial harmony” with three ethical baseball players indicating we are all equal if we can all stick together no matter what race or background you come from. But the house of dolls was the most memorable out of them all. It way a protest against drug dealers that gathered across the street, the message was for them to move on because people are watching them, represented by the dolls, the drawings on the builds showed the consequences that they can face if they continued. Tito, would still make a difference with his art work showing his appreciation to doctors, hospitals, and also law enforcement going into police precincts with drawings he did for them to show his gratitude for the people that they protected and also the lives that they saved.

Que Bonito Dia Como Hoy as we celebrate our Brother, Grandfather, Father, Activist, Band Leader, Composer, Pianist, 8 Time Grammy Award Winner and Hero Eddie Palmieri . On July 8th 2026 the day was filled with Family, Friends, Fans and incredible energy from the Latino Community. To help honor Eddie Palmieri Way on 112 st and Park ave., aside his brother the great Charlie Palmieri, the Latino community showed up with positve and fesitve spirts. The day was filled with music, food and block party summer vibes, just like Eddie would of wanted.

I was very moved by this occasion as it reminded me of my childhood growing up in El Barrio durring the 70s, 80s 90s. As a small token of my appreciation to the Palmieri Family I created a very special linocut print dedicated to Eddie Palmieri. The print depicts the time when Eddie performed a benefit concert at Hunter College to raise funds for the Young Lords who were arrested for seizing the Statue of Liberty October 25th, 1977. 🇵🇷🗽

Thanks to musical guest @eddiepalmieriexperience @jimmybosch Jose Clausell, Johnny Rivero, Camillo Molina, Joe Fiedler, Orlando Vega, Luques Curtis, Zaccai Curtis, Joseph Keike Gonzalez, Nelson Gonzalez, Karen Joseph, Louis Fouché, Ruben Rodriguez, Herman Olivera and many others for thier epic jam session.

A special shout out @dasny_president Robert Rodriguez, @cm_encarnacion @senatorserrano @senatorccleare @positiveworkforce Mikey Melendez, @felipejluciano , Héctor Santana just to name a few.

Gracias por todo Eddie. 👑🎹🇵🇷🙏🏽

As I prepare for birthdays in June, Graduations, Parades and Festivals, It's with extreme gratitude that I share this with you. Since 1986, I've been painting, illustrating, writing my name and graffiti on the walls while serving our community. To celebrate this 40 year milestone, I have released some PuertoRican Day Parade inspired tshirt designs that were hand made from the archives. These never released Tshirts designs are now available exclusively on shop.oriosdesigns.com as well as some Orios Designs 20th anniversary hats (2006). Thank you everyone for all your Love and Support throughout the years.
