What's it like having an eating disorder?

In this candid conversation, our Founder & CEO, Kerrie Jones, sheds light on the often misunderstood reality of living with an eating disorder.

“It's like having a constant voice in their head... that they were almost constantly being bullied... but interestingly, what they said was they trusted that voice because they believed that that voice would make things better.”

For many, it’s not just about food — it’s about emotions, self-worth, and the search for control. Understanding this is key to providing the compassionate support needed for recovery.

At Orri, we believe that recovery is possible with the right support, understanding, and compassion.

If you relate to this or know someone who might, we’d love to hear from you. Comment below or get in touch — you’re not alone. 💛

“I’m fine” can leave you unsure what to do when mealtimes seem increasingly difficult.

You may worry about overstepping, saying the wrong thing or making things harder. A gentle conversation can begin with what you’ve noticed and a willingness to listen, without expecting an explanation straight away.

Your loved one may need time to find the words. You can keep offering opportunities to talk while seeking guidance for yourself.

If you’re concerned about someone’s relationship with food, our team is here to listen and help you explore possible next steps. Get in touch through the link in our bio.

When your feed is full of conversations about weight loss, it can be hard to notice how they’re making you feel.

In this reel, Sophie Killip (she/her), Eating Disorders Psychotherapist at Orri, explores the presence of GLP-1 medications online and how the conversations surrounding them can reinforce narrow ideals about what our bodies should look like.

Repeated messages about changing your body can bring up comparison, uncertainty or pressure — especially if your relationship with food or your body already feels difficult.

Whatever these conversations bring up for you, you deserve space to talk about it, without judgement.

If you’re finding things difficult, we’re here to listen. Reach out through the link in our bio to explore how Orri can support you. by @orri_uk

A meal can carry a story. Someone who taught you to cook. A celebration you look forward to. A small reminder of somewhere, or someone, you miss.

When you’re living with an eating disorder, those foods can bring mixed feelings. Something meaningful may also feel difficult, and it’s okay to talk about both.

As we continue reflecting on culture, identity and community this Black History Month, we’re recognising the importance of asking what food means to each person, without assuming the answer.

Home and belonging look different for everyone. For some, food offers connection. For others, those associations may be complicated or still taking shape.

Your experiences deserve space in your care. At Orri, we work together to understand what matters to you and how we can support your recovery.

Feeling understood can begin with someone taking the time to ask, and giving you space to answer.

This Black History Month, we’re celebrating Black identities, histories and communities, and reflecting on how eating disorder care can better recognise each person’s experience.

Culture may be held in familiar meals, relationships, traditions or a sense of belonging. What these mean will be different for everyone. They may offer comfort and connection, or bring feelings that need space to be explored.

There should also be room to talk about experiences of racism or being overlooked, without anyone feeling expected to explain or represent a whole community.

At Orri, kindness means listening, respecting what matters to you and involving you in your care. That commitment matters throughout the year.

You deserve support that takes the time to know you. Find out more through the link in our bio.

Before the month ends, a small check-in: what helped you stay steady?

It might have been someone checking in, a familiar routine, support around a difficult meal or a moment when you could be honest about how you felt.

If this month hasn’t felt steady, you haven’t failed this reflection. You might simply notice what you needed more of, or what you’d like support with next.

There’s no score to give yourself and no pressure to turn next month into a fresh start.

Save these prompts for a quiet moment, or share one thing that helped you below, if you’d like.

“I thought I was supposed to feel happy.”

There can be a gap between how we imagine parenthood will feel and what we actually experience. Joy might sit alongside fear, uncertainty, frustration or missing parts of your life before.

You don’t have to resolve those feelings into one neat answer.

For anyone navigating pregnancy or parental roles alongside an eating disorder, there may also be worries about food, body changes, disrupted routines or finding time for their own recovery.

Those concerns deserve to be heard. You shouldn’t have to hide them to seem grateful, or put your own needs last to prove you’re a good parent.

At Orri, we believe support should make space for the person behind the parenting role, too.

“If I let go of this, how will I cope?”

That question deserves space in eating disorder recovery.

For some people, an eating disorder becomes tied to managing feelings or situations that seem overwhelming. The thought of change can bring fear, even when you want things to be different.

This National Psychotherapy Day, we’re recognising the value of having somewhere to explore those feelings without judgement.

Therapy can help you understand patterns, put words to experiences and develop other ways of coping, alongside the nutritional and physical support recovery may require.

At Orri, we believe care should make room for your whole experience. You don’t have to arrive with a clear explanation of why you’re struggling.

Asking for help can feel vulnerable enough without wondering whether your identity will be questioned, misunderstood or overlooked.

This Bi Visibility Day, we’re reminding anyone who is bi and struggling with an eating disorder: you deserve support that makes room for all of you. 💜

That means listening without making assumptions about your partner, respecting the language you use for yourself, and giving you space to share at your own pace.

At Orri, we believe your identity, relationships and experiences deserve to be understood as part of your care. You don’t have to leave part of yourself at the door.

Young people are not being dramatic.

A recent BBC article has opened up an important conversation about the pressures young people are facing, and the real rise in mental distress among children and young people.

For families, this matters.

Eating disorders can be difficult to spot, especially when a young person is still going to school, achieving well, seeing friends, or insisting they are “fine”.

But distress can show up in quieter ways:

changes around food
increased secrecy
rigidity around routine
fear of eating with others
body image distress
compulsive exercise
withdrawal or irritability
feeling more anxious, overwhelmed or out of control

Many young people do not recognise that they need support straight away. That does not mean the concern is not real.

If something feels different, it is worth taking seriously.

Support should not wait for crisis.

If you are worried about your child’s relationship with food, body image or exercise, support is available via the link in our bio.

Content note: suicide and suicidal thoughts.

September is Suicide Prevention Month — an opportunity to keep conversations about suicide open, compassionate and free from judgement.

We know how isolating periods of mental ill health and eating disorder recovery can feel. Reaching out to someone, asking how they really are and making space for an honest answer can be more important than we realise.

You don’t have to be an expert and you don’t need the perfect thing to say. Notice. Ask. Listen. Stay connected. And where needed, help someone access professional support.

If you are struggling yourself, you deserve support too.

Samaritans: 116 123, free 24 hours a day
NHS 111: call 111 and select the mental health option
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999 or go to A&E.
