Psalm 143 describes our war against Goliath the giant. Goliath was arrogant and vainglorious against the Lord and Israel; David slew him and cut off his head. This is a picture of our war against the powerful sinful passions, especially arrogance and vainglory, the most destructive of sins. This psalm sets forth arrogance and vainglory in their true light, for the arrogant and vainglorious man is become like vanity, his days like a passing shadow and he speaks empty things. But the truly joyous and blessed people are those who bless the Lord with a humble spirit. And the Father sent forth His Hand [the Son] from on high to deliver us from the great waters of arrogance and vainglory that destroy the soul.

The image in the reel itself is of Saint George slaying the Dragon. Just as David, by faith, struck down the giant, so Saint George — strengthened by Christ, tramples the ancient Dragon. ☦︎

The Icon of Panagia Hodegetria (Παναγία Ὁδηγήτρια), also known as the Directress icon, is historically understood to be the first icon of the Church. It was painted, according to the Sacred Tradition of our Church, in Jerusalem by Saint Luke the Evangelist. According to the Synaxarion, the Holy Evangelist created the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos while she was still alive and she accepted it with great joy, and blessed it saying:

“May the Grace of He who was born from me be with this icon.”

The origins of this Icon is also witnessed to by the Megalynarion of the Paraklesis (Παράκλησήςto) the Most Holy Theotokos where the following is chanted:

“Speechless be the lips of impious ones, those who do not reverence your great icon, the sacred one which is called Directress, and was depicted for us by one of the Apostles, Luke the Evangelist.”

Saint Luke sent the portrait of the Mother of God to Antioch. Toward the middle of the 5th Century, the icon was transferred to Constantinople. The icon performed countless miracles, such as the rescue of Constantinople in 717 AD from the Arabs and the Slavs. Panagia Hodegetria was the icon that the Emperors and the people carried around the walls of Constantinople in difficult times to encourage the defenders of the City.

“Die before you die, and you shall not die when you die.”
Crucify the passions before they crucify your soul. Bury your pride before the earth buries your flesh. Repent before the hour comes when you can no longer repent. You live as though time belongs to you, yet every breath is a mercy and every passing moment brings you closer to eternity. The grave is not the greatest terror, meeting Christ unprepared is. It is later than you think. Remember your death. Take up your cross. For the man who dies with Christ has nothing to fear when death comes to claim him ☦️ #orthodox #christian #faith #jesus #rememberdeath by @orthodoxwarrior

Saints Sergius and Bacchus — Οἱ Ἅγιοι Σέργιος καὶ Βάκχος.

On October 7, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Great Martyrs Sergius and Bacchus, Roman officers who gave their lives for Christ in Syria.

Sergius and Bacchus served in the army of Emperor Maximian, who honoured them with high rank for their courage and their sober way of life. When he learned they were Christians, he ordered them to take part in a sacrifice at a pagan temple. They refused and openly confessed Christ.

The emperor stripped them of their insignia, had them paraded in women’s clothing with chains around their necks, and sent them east to Antiochus, the military commander on the Euphrates frontier. Bacchus was beaten to death. According to Holy Tradition, he appeared to Sergius that night in military dress, his face shining like an angel’s, and urged him to follow.

Antiochus, who had once been helped by Sergius, offered him his life if he would deny Christ. Sergius answered with the words of the Apostle: “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). He was made to run in boots fitted with nails, and was then beheaded at Resafa. Emperor Justinian later built a church in their honour in Constantinople, known today as Little Hagia Sophia.

The Church chants:

“In contest you were victorious warriors of the Trinity, and an illustrious pair of martyrs, Sergius godly champion, and Bacchus noble athlete. In the radiancy of your glory you shelter those who cry: Glory to Him Who has strengthened you; glory to Him Who has crowned you; glory to Him Who through you works healings for all.”

Holy Martyrs Sergius and Bacchus, pray to God for us.

Χρόνια πολλά to all who celebrate their name day today.
Fasting: strict fast today (Wednesday): no meat, dairy, fish, wine or oil.

"The satanic spirit of sorrow causes anxiety, suffering, distress, depression, and repeated falls into the same sins. Demonic sorrow is the result and a sign of unrepentance, terrible selfishness, and the demon hiding within us.
Divine sorrow, by contrast, comes as warmth companionship, a smile, and rest in our lives, giving us strength, joy, and courage. We feel as though we have done nothing yet, as though we are only just beginning our lives.
Therefore, be watchful; do not surrender to the defeat brought about by sorrow. Yield only to divine, spiritual sorrow-that is, the celebration of a heart that rejoices in repentance and divine life."'

The Holy Apostle Thomas — Ο Άγιος Απόστολος Θωμάς.

On October 6, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy and Glorious Apostle Thomas, one of the Twelve.

When Christ resolved to return to Judea, where the Jews had sought to stone Him, Thomas said to the other disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with Him" (John 11:16).

Thomas was absent when the Risen Lord first appeared to the Apostles, and he would not believe on their word alone. Eight days later Christ appeared again and showed him His wounds, and Thomas confessed, "My Lord and my God" (John 20:28).

According to Holy Tradition, he arrived late to the Dormition of the Theotokos and received from her the Holy Belt, which is kept to this day at the Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos.

He preached the Gospel as far as India. In the city of Meliapur he brought the wife and son of the local prefect to Christ, and for this he was imprisoned, tortured and pierced with five spears.

The Church chants:

“O Holy Apostle Thomas, intercede with the merciful God, that He grant unto our souls forgiveness of offences.”

Holy Apostle Thomas, pray to God for us.

Χρόνια πολλά to all who celebrate their name day today.
Fasting: none today.

‘You will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved.’ Matthew 10:22

I made this edit as a reminder of the sacrifices our Lord endured for our salvation, and of all His holy martyrs who followed Him, enduring persecution, suffering, and death while remaining faithful to Christ.

Their example reminds us that when we fall, we must get back up.

When we are weak, we must turn again to Christ.

When we suffer, we must remember that our Lord Himself carried the Cross before us.

We are not promised an easy path. We are called to take up our cross, deny ourselves, and remain faithful until the end.

May the courage of the martyrs inspire us to persevere, to repent, to keep fighting the good fight, and never abandon Christ.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon us.

Glory to God for all things.

THE HYPOCRISY THAT THE SPIRIT OF THE AGE ENABLES WITHOUT HESITATION

We live in an age where the world is quick to condemn persecution when it affects one’s own religious or ethnic group, yet often becomes remarkably silent when the Christian suffers for his confession of Christ.
When a Jew is persecuted, the charge of antisemitism is raised.
When a Muslim is persecuted or his faith is insulted, Islamophobia is invoked.
Persecution and hatred against any human being made in the image and likeness of God should never be celebrated.
But where is the same outrage when the Christian is mocked, hated, imprisoned, beaten, or even killed for confessing Christ?
Where is the concern when the Orthodox Christian is told to remain silent, abandon his convictions, or compromise his faith for the sake of the spirit of the age?
The Christian does not possess a convenient card to escape persecution.
We have a Cross.
Our Lord never promised us a life free from suffering. He told us:
“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.”
We do not seek persecution.
We do not hate those who oppose us.
We do not seek revenge against those who mistreat us.
But neither do we abandon Christ to save ourselves from suffering.
The Apostles endured imprisonment.
 The Martyrs endured torture.
The Saints endured ridicule, exile, poverty and death.
And they did not deny Christ.
This is the difference between the spirit of the world and the spirit of the Gospel.
The world says: protect yourself at all costs.
Christ says: “Whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.”
Our response to persecution is not hatred, but endurance and we embrace it.
 Not revenge, but prayer.
 Not compromise, but confession.
We carry whatever cross the Lord permits us to carry, knowing that our suffering is not greater than His.
We owe Him everything.
Our life.
 Our breath.
 Our salvation.
Christ is worth more than this world.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon us sinners, and grant us the strength to remain faithful unto the end.

In an age when the Orthodox lands were surrounded by enemies…

when the Russian people suffered under invasion from the East…

and crusading armies advanced from the West…

God raised up a prince.

His name was Alexander Nevsky.

A ruler.

A warrior.

But above all… a servant of Christ.

Alexander understood that his strength did not come from armies, weapons, or numbers.

It came from God.

Before battle, he prayed.

He sought the blessing of the Church.

And when he marched against his enemies, he carried not pride…

but faith.

In 1240, at the Neva River, Alexander confronted the Swedish invaders.

And in 1242, when the forces of the Teutonic Order advanced into the Orthodox lands, he stood once again before them.

The enemy was powerful.

But Alexander did not tremble.

For he knew the truth:

“The power of God is not in numbers, but in truth.”

Upon the frozen waters of Lake Peipus…

the armies met.

Steel struck steel.

The ice beneath their feet became a battlefield.

And Alexander fought not for his own glory…

but to defend his people…

his homeland…

and the Orthodox Christian faith entrusted to him.

He was a prince who understood that authority is service.

A warrior who understood that courage requires humility.

And a Christian who understood that earthly victory means nothing without Christ.

Saint Alexander Nevsky did not live for this world.

He endured hardship.

He carried the burdens of his people.

And when his earthly life came to its end…

he left behind more than the memory of a victorious commander.

He left the witness of a faithful Christian ruler.

Saint Alexander Nevsky…

Holy Right-Believing Prince…

pray to Christ our God for us.

Teach us courage without pride.

Zeal without hatred.

Strength without arrogance.

And faith without fear.

For our battle is not ultimately against flesh and blood.

The battle is for the soul.

And the victory belongs to Christ.

Christ is victorious.

Christ is risen.

Christ reigns forever.
