Things you might not know about me.... Running Orwell and Austen means I spend a lot of time talking about knitwear, colour and the realities of running a small business, but there is obviously a person behind all of that too. From swapping a career in law for designing sweaters at my kitchen table, to being an oat latte obsessive, a mum, and someone who will choose the Smile Elbow Patch cardigan every single time, there is quite a lot that doesn’t always make it onto the grid. If you are new here, hi, I’m Jess, founder of Orwell and Austen. This is not the introduction I would have chosen, but it is a very real part of what it means to build a small independent brand today. Last year I found my designs (of pieces I’d been selling for over 5 years) being copied and sold on Amazon. We reported it, sent evidence, followed up, and did everything we were supposed to do. The listings stayed up. In fact, it now looks as though even more of my designs have been copied. For a brand like mine, this is not just upsetting. Every copied piece chips away at the work that goes into doing things properly: designing original knitwear, using better fibres, producing in small ethical runs, and working with real makers whose skill and livelihoods matter. So if you are new here, I hope this gives a little context for why supporting small brands matters so much. Apparently putting daisies on the elbows of a beautiful cashmere blend sweater was all it took to make me fall in love with knitwear all over again.
