Food labels can tell us a lot, but figuring out exactly what they mean isn’t always easy. 🔎

We’re breaking down a few common terms you might spot while grocery shopping, what they tell you about a product, and what they don’t.

No label is here to tell you what you should buy. Knowing what the terminology means simply gives you more information to make choices based on what matters to you.

food labels, food labeling, grocery shopping, food education, natural food label, cage-free, pasture-raised, grass-fed, grass-finished, raised without antibiotics, food transparency, Traverse City, northern Michigan, food co-op

🌿 What does “natural” mean?

The FDA has generally considered “natural” to mean that nothing artificial or synthetic, including color additives, has been added to a food that wouldn’t normally be expected to be there.

What the term doesn’t address is just as helpful to understand. “Natural” doesn’t necessarily tell you how ingredients were grown or how a food was produced or processed. It also isn’t a statement about the nutritional benefits of a food.

And while you’ll often see “natural” and “organic” in the same grocery aisle, the two terms don’t mean the same thing. USDA Organic is a separate certification with defined production standards.

🥚 What does “cage-free” mean?

Simply put, the hens that laid the eggs weren’t housed in cages and were able to move around within their housing.

One thing the term doesn’t necessarily tell you is whether those hens went outdoors. Cage-free hens can still be raised entirely indoors.

If outdoor access is something you’re looking for when buying eggs, check the carton for additional information about how the hens were raised.

🐓 What about “pasture-raised”?

This term is generally used to describe hens that have access to outdoor pasture, but the words “pasture-raised” on their own don’t tell you everything about the conditions or standards behind that access.

That’s where third-party certifications can provide more information. Certifications such as Certified Humane or American Humane Certified have their own requirements covering things like outdoor access, space, and opportunities for hens to perfo by @oryanatc

😂 We have jokes.

🤹 We have juggling skills.

And if you want to experience all three in one place? Well, you know where to find us. We’ve been here since 1973. ❤️

Our hearts are with The Farmers’ Creamery in Mio, Michigan. ❤️

On October 3, a devastating fire caused extensive damage to their processing facility. Thankfully, all employees and personnel are safe and unharmed.

The Farmers’ Creamery is a local cooperative built on the hard work of Michigan dairy farmers and their families. As they navigate the road to recovery and rebuilding, we’re reminded of the importance of supporting our fellow cooperatives and local producers.

🥚 We still have Farmers’ Creamery eggs available at both Oryana locations! Picking up a carton is a simple way to show your support for this local co-op and the farm families behind it during a difficult time.

We’re sending our support to the entire Farmers’ Creamery team and are rooting for them as they work toward rebuilding. ❤️

You may already be buying from co-ops without realizing it! 👀💚

This National Co-op Month, meet three cooperatively owned brands you can find right here at Oryana.

#nationalcoopmonth #cooperatives #foodcoop #oryanacoop #traversecity

@tillamook County Creamery Association has been farmer-owned since 1909. Its dairy farmers collectively own the cooperative, carrying more than a century of dairy-making tradition forward.

@kerrygoldusa is owned by Ornua, an Irish dairy cooperative that brings together thousands of dairy farmers. The cooperative helps bring products made with milk from Ireland’s family farms to people around the world.

@westbycoopcreamery has been farmer-owned since 1903. Local dairy farm families collectively own the creamery and supply the milk used to make its cottage cheese and other cultured dairy products. taken in Oryana Community Co-op by @oryanatc
