9-22-26. 👍🏽 Resident Evil (2026) is a moment-to-moment, mostly lone-character, horror-comedy, based on a video-game movie. It’s a surprising and refreshing departure from the previous action-horror movies in this franchise. Resident Evil (2026) is the 8th film in this franchise; which includes a one-season TV series and 5 animated feature films that I didn’t even know existed. Resident Evil (2026) is already: a top-grossing 2026 movie, the most positively reviewed movie based on a video-game ever, the best of the 5 zombie movies released in 2026 so far, and the best Resident Evil movie. That’s all because of the outside-the-box direction from Zach Cregger, and a phenomenal performance from Austin Abrams. The simple story is: A medical courier named Bryan (Austin Abrams) has to deliver an organ to a hospital. Along the way, Bryan encounters zombies. If you didn’t already know, yes, it’s another zombie movie. What makes these zombies different is that they collect other people and other body parts, until they become a massive rolling ball of body parts. Although I do not play video-games, you can definitely see the video-game elements in this movie: A lone main character, point of view shots with a gun in the frame, specific characters, specific monsters, and a recurring joke of having to shoot padlocks open. Bryan even often makes bad decisions, or waits too long looking in shock at the monsters around him, which made me want to yell, “Move!” several times. Zach Cregger keeps this movie simple, grounded, and relatable with mostly one character going from moment to moment, with great scares in the first half, and then great action in the second half, and with lots of great horror imagery throughout. Zach Cregger continues to kill it in this new wave of horror directors, with his movies: Barbarian (2022), Weapons (2025), and now Resident Evil (2026), and he’s chosen one of his stars from Weapons (2025) to lead this movie. Austin Abrams’s sense of humor and likability carries this movie. Continued in the comments. taken in AMC Burbank 16 by @oscar.mcfarlane

9-7-26. 👍🏽 Hope is awesome, epic, outstanding, sci-fi, monster, action filmmaking at its finest. On the upside, this movie has long, amazing, heart-pounding, action-packed chase scenes. The chase scenes are filmed with a wide-angle lens on fast cars. The chase scenes include running, driving, and horseback riding. The story is: In the small South Korean city called Hope Harbor, an alien spaceship has crash-landed in the nearby forest. The four very fast, very tall, intelligent, humanoid, nearly indestructible aliens are looking for something. One of the aliens leaves bloody dead human bodies and destruction in its path. A small group of humans, which includes a police chief, his deputy, a retired colonel, a carpenter, and a group of hunters are the only ones in Hope Harbor who can fight off this alien invasion. On the slightly downside, this is a comedic group of characters. When there isn’t an alien chase scene, the comedy stops the movie dead in its tracks, and the movie loses focus. Regardless, I laughed a lot. The chase scenes have an exciting orchestral film-score. The visual-effects are mostly great. If you think that three of the aliens look like Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander (real-life married couple), as well as Taylor Russell, that’s because they provided motion-capture performances. Toward the end of the movie, we see the aliens’ perspective of what’s happening, and then the movie abruptly ends, which caused several people in the audience at the screening that I attended to say out loud, “WTF?!” So it looks like there will be a sequel and possibly a franchise. This is one of my favorite movies of this year. I already can’t wait to see this movie again. I highly recommend Hope. P.S. Stay for a quick mid-end-credits scene. taken in AMC Burbank 16 by @oscar.mcfarlane

9-2-26. 👍🏽 Coyote vs. Acme. If you love the Warner Bros. Looney Tunes cartoons and characters, this is a must-see movie. It’s surprisingly: 1) hilarious, and 2) has great visual-effects. This was a crowd-pleaser. It got lots of loud laughs from the audience throughout the movie, and it got applause at the end. Of the four Looney Tunes live-action and animation hybrid feature films, this is the best one, followed by Space Jam (1996). I recommend Coyote vs. Acme for Looney Tunes fans. taken in AMC Burbank 16 by @oscar.mcfarlane

9-2-26. 👍🏽 Fall 2: Deadpoint. I have a fear of heights, but I can control it, so I’m okay in tall buildings with windows, steep hikes, and I LOVE roller-coasters. It’s my fear of heights that make roller-coasters so fun, and why I enjoyed the survival-thriller movie Fall (2022). Now there is Fall 2: Deadpoint, and I enjoyed it again. Instead of two young women getting stranded on top of a 2,000-foot-tall TV tower in the middle of a desert as in the first movie, this time two young women get stranded on a narrow plank-walk 3,000 feet up on the side of a mountain in Thailand. Yeah, there are moments of bad: story, dialogue, and acting, but the horrifying heights in this movie kept me nervous and grabbing onto my seat. Love it. If you enjoyed Fall (2022), you’ll enjoy this sequel. I recommend Fall 2: Deadpoint. taken in AMC Burbank 16 by @oscar.mcfarlane

9-2-26. 👍🏽 The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982). I went to a sold-out screening of this movie-musical in honor of Dolly Parton’s passing. I have to admit, I’ve only seen this movie once, over 30 years ago, when it aired on TV in an edited and censored version. Although I loved Dolly Parton in it, I didn’t love this movie. Seeing it now though, this movie was absolutely delightful! Like Prince’s Purple Rain (1984), seeing it on the big screen in a movie theater full of Dolly Parton fans made it HUGELY better! Every joke landed with loud laughter from the audience, the romance was heartfelt, and all the songs were catchy and wonderful. Dolly Parton was voluptuous, beautiful, charming, and perfection as Miss Mona. This movie was processed in Technicolor, so all of Dolly Parton’s colorful and shiny outfits popped. Burt Reynolds, as Sheriff Ed Earl, was dashing and heroic as he fought for Miss Mona in one of his best roles. Dom DeLuise was hilariously villainous as Melvin P. Thorpe. Jim Nabors, in a Gomer Pyle-like role as Deputy Fred, got the most laughs, and stole every scene he was in. Charles Durning, as the Governor, was also hilarious, and a surprisingly good singer and dancer in his song “The Sidestep,” where he calls his enemies Communists, and evades answering reporters’ questions by using word-salads (which reminded me of Donald Trump). Yes, this R-rated 1982 movie did feel a bit dated: It has a slow-pace, lots of smoking, and lots of titties, but it was a lot of fun. The audience at this screening applauded for Dolly Parton’s name on the screen at the beginning of the movie. I could hear sniffling (crying) when Dolly Parton sang her signature song “I Will Always Love You,” which worked well in this movie. And we applauded the movie at the end. I’m so glad I got to see this movie and reassess it. I love it! I highly recommend The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas on the big screen. taken in AMC Burbank 16 by @oscar.mcfarlane

8-31-26. 👍🏽 Colony. If you liked the South Korean zombie movie Train to Busan (2016. I liked it.), then you’ll like Colony, which was directed by the same director: Yeon Sang-ho. The story is: A terrorist releases a zombie-virus into a high-rise building which includes a shopping mall, and is full of people. The zombies that emerge are: rage-filled, run fast, and have a hive-mind. The zombies’ hive-mind can be controlled by the mind of the terrorist. (Which kind of reminds me of the supervillain in the recent Spider-Man: Brand New Day.) A group of uninfected people not only have to meticulously figure out how to survive, but they also have to meticulously figure out how to stop the zombie outbreak. What’s notable about this zombie movie (after SO MANY recent zombie entertainments), is the simultaneous choreography of the many actors playing zombies, and how they physically hurl themselves everywhere. It’s astonishing to watch. I recommend Colony if you enjoy zombies. taken in AMC Burbank Towncenter 8 by @oscar.mcfarlane

8-31-26. 👍🏽 Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is very: campy, moody, meta, surreal, languid, and lesbian. The story is: A young queer filmmaker named Kris Williams (Hannah Einbinder) has been hired to direct a reboot of Camp Miasma, a long-running slasher horror movie franchise that began in 1980, and has had 13 sequels of various levels of quality. (Similar to the Friday the 13th franchise.) The recurring villain in Camp Miasma is transgendered, and known as Little Death. Kris has been hired to make a reboot Camp Miasma movie that is not transphobic, and she is interested in casting the original Camp Miasma final girl Billy Presley (Gillian Anderson). Billy quit acting after that movie, because the role took a toll on her psychologically. Billy has not only obsessed over that movie ever since, watching it over and over like Norma Desmond watching her own silent movies in Sunset Boulevard (1950), but she also lives at the abandoned campgrounds that was used to film the original Camp Miasma. Kris and Billy quickly become obsessed with each other. I enjoyed this movie, but I have a nitpick. I found that the slow-pace of this movie caused it to lose focus. To the credit of writer-director Jane Schoenbrun, this movie is not about story, horror, or fast-paced action. This movie is about the characters and the mood. Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson deliver full characters. (Gillian Anderson even has a Dolly Parton Tennessee accent.) I just wish that the monologues and dialogues were quicker. Regardless, this movie has already become an instant beloved queer-horror classic. A lot of people have recommended this movie. I even saw it at a sold-out screening on a Monday, August 31. This movie was released on August 7! I recommend Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. taken in AMC Burbank Towncenter 8 by @oscar.mcfarlane

8-31-26. 👍🏽 Buddy is a bonkers, unpredictable, horror-comedy, and parody of Barney & Friends (1992-2010). This movie depicts the 1999 children’s TV show It’s Buddy!, which has a Barney-like orange unicorn named Buddy. When one of the kids on the show refuses to dance, Buddy goes on a killing spree. We come to find out that the kids and adults on the show were taken from the real world and have no memory of their lives before they got on the show. Now the kids and adults must find their way back to the real world, before being murdered by Buddy. I love the unpredictability of this movie, and also that once these characters are dead, they’re dead. No, this is not a dream movie. Yay! This is a very fun horror-comedy, and way better than Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023). (I didn’t even see Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (2025), because I hated the first one.) The cast includes: Cristin Milioti, Topher Grace, Clint Howard, and the voices of: Keegan-Michael Key as Buddy the unicorn, Patton Oswalt as Strappy the backpack, and Michael Shannon as Willie the marionette. I recommend Buddy. taken in AMC Burbank 16 by @oscar.mcfarlane

8-24-26. The Magic Faraway Tree. On the downside, this family-fantasy-adventure film is aimed at young children, because of its silliness. On the upside, the message of this movie is: give up everything, including the internet and electricity, go live in the country with your family, live off the land and the love of your own family, and rediscover the magic, wonder, and playfulness of youth. It’s a wonderful message delivered by a surprisingly A-list cast, which includes: Andrew Garfield, Claire Foy, Nicola Coughlan, Jessica Gunning, Jennifer Saunders, and Rebecca Ferguson. Of these actors, Andrew Garfield is the standout to me. As usual, Andrew Garfield delivers his performance of a loving dad with his whole heart. The production design also stands out as top-notch. The hair, costumes, and sets are gorgeous. It’s a beautiful movie. Unfortunately, it’s a silly movie. I recommend The Magic Faraway Tree for little kids. P.S. This movie is adapted from a popular British book series (1939–1951), and it will have two sequels. P.S. This movie reminded me of Matilda the Musical (2022), which was overlooked here in the U.S., but it’s a wonderful movie that I highly recommend instead. taken in The Americana at Brand by @oscar.mcfarlane

8-17-26. 👍🏽 Half Man. I went to a screening of the 6th and final episode of the HBO series Half Man, with a Q&A and reception with the creator and writer of the series Richard Gadd. Half Man is about toxic masculinity. Just as with Richard Gadd’s previous brilliant Netflix series Baby Reindeer, Half Man is intense, dark, violent, has dark humor, outstanding acting, and is amazing. Even though Richard Gadd is skilled at creating these intense and dark stories, his characters feel human and relatable. Richard Gadd gave an eloquent Q&A. I got to talk to Richard Gadd at the reception. He was down to Earth, friendly, and so awesome. There is a joke about Doctor Who in the 6th episode, and I coincidentally was wearing a Doctor Who T-shirt, which Richard Gadd noticed and liked. I recommend Half Man, but with a warning. It is intense and dark. taken in UTA Production Arts by @oscar.mcfarlane

8-17-26. 👍🏽 The End of Oak Street. I enjoyed this movie, but I found it a bit weird. More on that later. I went to see this movie only knowing that it’s a “Dinosaurs in the suburbs” movie. The first thing I noticed was that it takes place in a different time period than our own. From some of the butterfly collars, feathered hair, and a minidress that Anne Hathaway wears, I thought it was 1978, but when the songs played, I knew right away that this movie takes place in 1982. Then I noticed that the cinematography, with its zooms and split-focus, was also 1980s-style. This movie has the slow-build of movies before 1983. That’s the year that MTV really caught on, and film-editing became faster for short-attention spans. This movie is even strongly influenced by 1980s Steven Spielberg movies, and 1980s Stephen King novels. Think of The End of Oak Street as a remake of Poltergeist (1982, written and produced by Steven Spielberg), but instead of ghosts, there are dinosaurs. The main characters in this movie are a family. The mom, named Denise (Anne Hathaway), and the dad, named Greg (Ewan McGregor), are having marital and financial problems. They’re on the verge of getting a divorce. Denise is secretly writing a novel. Greg secretly drinks whiskey, and he’s supporting their 4-person family with the salary of a pizza delivery driver, having secretly lost his regular job. The daughter, named Audrey (Maisy Stella), cries a lot, and the son, named Brian (Christian Convery), is obsessed with finding his dog Starbuck, which continually puts his family in mortal danger. A very large time-bubble, or time wormhole, transports their neighborhood 200 million years into the past: the Jurassic period. A few of the dinosaurs are recognizable from Jurassic Park (1993), namely the Tyrannosaurus and the Spinosaurus, but the velociraptors in this movie have feathers, and some of the large dinosaurs have fur, which are probably more accurate. There are also prehistoric: turtles, alligators, Stegosaurus, Pterodactyls, and an anaconda. Continued in the comments. taken in The Grove by @oscar.mcfarlane

7-31-26. 👍🏽 Spider-Man: Brand New Day is one of the best superhero movies ever. It not only has a lot of action and a lot of emotion, it also has a noticeably different look than all the previous Spider-Man movies, and yet it’s also an excellent continuation of the previous Spider-Man movies. Spider-Man: Brand New Day felt like a mystery movie to me. This movie asks: Who is the new villain, and what does this new villain want? Will Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) reconnect with his girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) and his best-friend Ned (Jacob Batalon)? When the new villain is finally revealed in this movie, there were gasps from the comic-book geeks in the audience at the screening that I attended, which included me. The villain is one of the most powerful characters in comic-books, but this character has already been in movies, as both a hero and a villain. Fortunately, the way this character is used in this movie is different and brilliant, and I look forward to what this character does next in future movies. When it comes to reconnecting Peter Parker with MJ, this movie doesn’t do it the easy way with magic. As we learned this year through the movie Obsession, you shouldn’t use magic to make someone love you. So if you enjoyed watching Peter Parker and MJ slowly fall in love in the previous movies, you get to enjoy it all over again, because they’re restarting from nothing. The exciting action in this movie is supplied by: Spider-Man, the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Punisher/Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), Scorpion (Michael Mando), the red ninja group The Hand, and the new villain; with cameo appearances from Spider-Man comic-book supervillains: Tombstone, Boomerang, Tarantula, and Ramrod. The entire cast is outstanding, but the standouts to me were Tramell Tillman, Sadie Sink, and Tom Holland. Superb direction by Destin Daniel Cretton. I highly recommend Spider-Man: Brand New. It’s one of the best movies of this year. The audience at the screening that I attended applauded at the end. Continued in the comments. taken in AMC Burbank 16 by @oscar.mcfarlane
