Last night we attended a special friends and family screening at UTA hosted by Gloria Calderón Kellett and Mucho Mas Media of the new horror film “Rosario” directed by Felipe Vargas starring Emeraude Toubia. Produced by Mucho Mas Media. Felipe did a wonderful job bringing this horror flick to life and we are always proud of the Latino cast and crew that worked on this film. Catch “Rosario” in theatres on May 2nd 2025. Link for tickets on our IG stories. ⬅️ 🎥🎞️🎬

The film is cast by Alan Luna & Natalie Ballesteros at ABL Casting. ✨

The Color Purple Q&A With Danielle Brooks

2-23-24. 👍🏽 I went to my 2nd screening of The Color Purple (2023), with a Q&A afterward with Best Supporting Actress Academy Award Nominee Danielle Brooks (@thedaniellebrooks). I’m not joking when I say that everyone in my row had tears in their eyes at the end of this screening, and you could hear sniffles throughout the movie theater. lol. It’s a powerful and beautiful movie. This movie should’ve been nominated for Best Actress for Fantasia Barrino, Best Supporting Actress for Danielle Brooks, and Best Picture. Alas, Danielle Brooks was the only nominee. The Q&A with Danielle Brooks was wonderful. I love it whenever Danielle Brooks gives interviews. Danielle Brooks even sang a bit of the song “Hell No!”, which was amazing live. Congratulations to Danielle Brooks! Speaking of awards, I hope all of my SAG-AFTRA friends voted for the awards. I know I did! I can’t wait to see the Screen Actors Guild Awards tonight at 5pm. I think there will be a few surprise winners. 🎭🏆 ~ @oscar.mcfarlane

McFarlane Reviews: The Color Purple 👍🏽

I first saw The Color Purple (1985) when I was invited to a dinner with family-friends when this movie first came out on VHS. I had to have them stop the movie twice because I had to “use the bathroom.” Truthfully, I had to cry my eyes out and silently weep in the bathroom. The two parts that got me so emotional were when Celie (Desreta Jackson) and her sister Nettie (Akosua Busia) are separated, and at the end when Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), Nettie (Akosua Busia), and her grown children are reunited. The Color Purple (1985) was the most powerful and beautiful movie I had ever seen. It’s my all-time 2nd favorite movie, after Aliens (1986); and Steven Spielberg is my all-time favorite director because of this movie. The Color Purple (1985) was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, but because of racism, it didn’t win a single award. I’m so glad that The Color Purple (1985) is so beloved in the Black community (along with The Wiz (1978), another favorite of mine). I then decided to read the 1982 novel by Alice Walker. It was the most adult novel I had read at a young age. The novel was way more graphic and strong in comparison to Steven Spielberg’s beautiful movie. The novel of course tells the story of Celie, a victim of life-long physical abuse, first by her father and then by her husband named Mister. Celie is poor, Black, a woman, and a lesbian after she meets Shug Avery. Through it all, she’s here. It’s a powerful novel, and I highly recommend reading it. In 2005, The Color Purple was adapted into a stage-musical. I got to see it at the Ahmanson Theatre in March 2008, and I loved it so much, that I befriended the merchandise-stand worker, I got a job there, and I got to see the stage-musical 8 times. It’s my all-time favorite stage-musical. It was revived in 2015, to critical acclaim. Anyone who knows me knows that in stage-musicals, I love the stage scenery, the props, and the special-effects. The 2015 Color Purple revival was minimalist. I saw it on 6-1-18. It didn’t have any stage scenery, it was rushed, and I didn’t like it. Continued in the next post. #thecolorpurple @thecolorpurple

‘Renaissance’ A Film By Beyonce

Mcfarlane Reviews:
•
12-1-23. 👍🏽 Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé does not need a recommendation from me. The Beyhive will be out in full-force, and they’ll see this concert-film multiple times, and thankfully for everyone, it is absolutely awesome! It’s one of the best concert-films ever. This concert-film feels as instantly iconic and important as Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991). Beyoncé is in peak beauty. Her body is amazing, her voice is rich and soulful, and she’s an incredible performer. Beyoncé exudes badass throughout this concert-film. I tried to keep count of all of the great moments in this concert-film, but I literally lost count. There are just too many great moments and great songs in this concert-film. The mute challenge happens twice in this concert-film, and the audience at the IMAX screening I attended nailed it. If you have a fan, bring it. There were several people who knew how to use their fan and when to use it. By the way, it was impossible to sit still and not applaud. Everyone was dancing in their seats and cheering as if it was a live Beyoncé concert. I do have a small nitpick, a suggestion really. Like all great concert-films, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé is both a documentary and concert-footage. I would love to see a concert-only version. In other words, there’s a stop-and-start aspect to this concert-film. Now that I’ve seen this 2 hour and 48 minute version, I want to go back to see it again and just see the concert. I’m truly jealous of you guys who saw this concert live! Regardless, I recommend Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé. It’s outstanding! - Oscar McFarlane || @oscar.mcfarlane

10-25-23. 👍🏽 I attended a screening, put on by Latino Filmmakers Network, of a wonderful new drama: The Shadow of the Sun; with my friend Danny Pino. This movie was produced by my friend Maylen Calienes, and directed and co-written by Miguel Ángel Ferrer. The Shadow of the Sun is Venezuela’s entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

McFarlane Reviews: The Creator

The Creator is a solid, sprawling, epic, science-fiction, action-drama. It’s also predictable and melodramatic. Fortunately, the stunning visuals, the futuristic world-building, and the great action can distract you from the fact that you’ve seen this sort of chosen-one story before. In this movie, the chosen-one is a little girl named Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), who is an advanced artificial-intelligence robot with the power to end the war between humans and artificial-intelligence. Sergeant Joshua Taylor (John David Washington) is a special-forces agent who can’t decide whether to be on the side of humans or artificial-intelligence because of his father-like ties to Alphie. This movie tends to be too sweet and too long. Regardless, I recommend The Creator. It’s a must-see for science-fiction movie fans. ~ Oscar McFarlane / @oscar.mcfarlane

MCFARLANE REVIEWS: ‘A MILLION MILES AWAY’

‘A Million Miles Away’ surprisingly follows the exact same formula as the recent movie Flamin’ Hot, which is: real-life Latinos starting at the bottom and through hard work, never giving up, and the specific Latino spirit, becoming great success stories. Michael Peña is a natural comedian, and even within this drama, he infuses his sly sense of humor. This movie is based on the book “Reaching for the Stars: The Inspiring Story of a Migrant Farmworker Turned Astronaut” by real-life NASA flight engineer José Hernández, who made it to the International Space Station. The ending of this movie is powerful and made me tearful with joy. I recommend A Million Miles Away. ~ @oscar.mcfarlane
