Edward William Godwin, one of the most creative, delicate and exotic designers of the XIXth century, died on this day October 6th 1886.

For the past fifteen years our gallery has been in love with his unique lines and love of Asia. He also created a rare line of furniture in the Queen Anne style, such as this fabulous and unique corner cabinet made for the living room of Andrew Muir, 42 Holland Park, London. Designed in 1873-1874 and manufactured by Collinson and Lock, it is now in an important European private collection.

Nurtured over years of joint presentations and a shared presence at @tefaf Maastricht, the dialogue between @oscargrafgallery and @galerielucasratton now finds a new setting at the Hôtel de La Trémoille.

The European decorative arts of the late nineteenth century meet the ancient arts of Africa, revealing affinities of form, material and line that transcend both geography and time. Placed side by side, each work casts new light on the other.

Today marks the final hours of Confidentiel, a last chance to witness this singular collaboration.

Confidentiel, Gallery by Gallery - Episode 2

Some works are rarely seen. At Confidentiel, their stories come to light.

@oscargrafgallery unveils a piece that has remained out of sight for 45 years. A few steps away, @galerielucasratton presents a rare pendant from the Solomon Islands with striking details. At @galerieneuse, an object nearly 500 years old is one of the last of its kind, with its only counterparts held in the Kremlin and the V&A Museum.

From one gallery to the next, a trail of rare works and remarkable stories unfolds.

Dear friends,

#TEFAF MAASTRICHT 2026 opens next week, get ready for our new theme, see you on stand 245 for :

‘BEYOND BORDERS : Decorative Arts as a Universal Language 1870-1914’

In the meantime today is the birthday of someone very special to us : TAXILE DOAT, the French porcelain master, was born on this day March 4th 1851 !

For the past ten years we have been in love with his ceramics and have worked with several institutions on fabulous vases, gourds and plaques by this irreplaceable ceramicist.

This was done with the invaluable help of the regretted Arnaud Carpentier and @didierherman.photographe and we are very grateful for this journey…

Stay tuned for some great @tefaf highlights and see you on stand 245 next March for more amazing discoveries !

Dear friends,

#TEFAF MAASTRICHT is back in four weeks and we can’t wait to unveil our new exhibition to the public, see you on stand 245 for :

‘BEYOND BORDERS : Decorative Arts as a Universal Language 1870-1914’

In the meantime we’re looking back at a fabulous rediscovery made by the gallery last year :

The ‘Bacchanales’ chalice made by Falize Frères for the 1904 Salon des Beaux-Arts in Paris, a wonderful silver, ivory and pate-de-verre creation, the perfect example of French Art Nouveau historicism.

This piece had everything we love : unique, executed to perfection, well documented and came from a very important private collection.

Stay tuned for some great @tefaf highlights and see you on stand 245 next March for more amazing discoveries !

In the meantime today is Valentine’s Day, a day to celebrate love, the perfect opportunity to look back at one of the most extraordinary objects I have ever had the priviledge to handle, albeit briefly.

LA FÉE MÉLUSINE ET LE CHEVALIER RAYMONDIN

A fantastic and unique sculpture made in 1894 by Jean Dampt after a well known medieval love story, and acquired shortly after by the notorious collector Martine de Béhague.

I am extremely lucky to have had this opportunity two years ago @tefaf for our exhibition SYMBOLISM - NEW HORIZONS and I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all those who were involved.

This masterpiece is currently exhibited at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon @museesdijon until March 6th.

Stay tuned for some great TEFAF highlights and see you on stand 245 next March !

‘BEYOND BORDERS : Decorative Arts as a Universal Language 1870-1914’

In the meantime we’re looking back at masterpieces from previous years, this one going back quite a bit : one of the most famous tables by British Aesthetic Movement architect Edward William Godwin, also known as the Smallhythe table, designed in 1872.

This design is an icon of British nineteenth century furniture, and only a handful of examples are known in the world, including examples in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art @metmuseum - The Museum of Fine Arts Houston @mfahouston - The National Gallery of Victoria @ngvmelbourne and Palazzo Butera @palazzobutera in Sicily.

We are very happy and proud that this amazing ebonised example is in the collection of the Louvre Abu Dhabi @louvreabudhabi and we thank all those who were involved in this beautiful acquisition.

Stay tuned for some great TEFAF highlights and see you on stand 245 next March !

Dear friends,

#TEFAF MAASTRICHT is back in five weeks and we can’t wait to unveil our new exhibition to the public, see you on stand 245.

In the meantime we’re looking back at last year’s TEFAF masterpiece, one of the most fabulous objects we’ve ever had the privilege to work on, and a fitting piece to post today as its maker died on Feb. 6th 1932 :

A unique amethyst covered cup mounted in gold, silver, cloisonné enamel, with aquamarines, frosted ruby and pearls, made in 1898-1899 by the amazing symbolist and Art Nouveau artist Armand Point in his Haute-Claire colony near Fontainebleau.

This dreamy object was originally given to Armand Point’s closest friend and patron Emile Nail-Démellette and was passed on by family descent until a few years ago. It was never shown or published during the XXth century and its rediscovery will help place Armand Point on the podium of the very best turn-of-the-century French orfevres, alongside Falize, Bracquemond, Grandhomme, Gaillard and Hirtz.

We are very happy and proud that this lost treasure is now in the collection of the @clevelandmuseumofart Cleveland Museum of Art and we thank all those who have been involved in this beautiful acquisition.

Stay tuned for some great TEFAF highlights and see you on stand 245 next March !

Two California masterpieces. Sneak Preview Part II of Graf, Kaplan & Zemaitis @thewintershownyc -
-
1. Greene & Greene. Sofa from the Blacker House, Pasadena, CA, ca. 1908. Executed by the Peter Hall Workshop, Pasadena. Honduran mahogany, ebony pegs, silk upholstery-
-
The earlier, more elaborate of two sofas made for the living room (the later example is in the Museum of the American Arts & Crafts Movement, St. Petersburg, FL). A remarkable, and inherently modern distillation of Chinese furniture, featuring G + G’s trademark rippling sculpted arms, arched crest rail, and stretchers connected by abbreviated huíwén fretwork. The sofa reemerged in 2021 for the first time since it was sold in the Blacker yard sale of 1950. Slide two is the present sofa in situ in the Blacker House. Presented by @robertkaplancollection and @oscargrafgallery
-
2. Sam Maloof. Rocking Chair, 1976. Walnut, ebony pegs. 50 years ago, on the occasion of the Bicentennial, Maloof completed a suite of furniture for the MFA Boston. Included was a new version of his iconic rocking chair, in which Maloof used a spectacular rabbet and dado corner joint which strengthened the construction and eliminated the need for a drop-in seat and stretchers. The present example, made the same year, is further enhanced by its ebony pegs. In 1981, another example of this refined version was gifted by Robert and Nancy McNeil to Ronald Reagan, becoming the first piece of American studio furniture to enter the White House collection. Hopefully it hasn’t been gilded by the present occupant. Presented by @james_zemaitis photo by @arnaldoanaya -
