5 years ago, Reverend Wanda Johnson called me to see if she could expand the Oscar Grant Foundation’s Backpack & School Supplies Giveway from one school site to the district at large. Her vision was to do a district-wide event so that more of our HUSD students could feel the love and community as we welcome them back to school with free backpacks and supplies.

The vision was presented to staff and they fell in love with the idea and event. They immediately got to work. They worked tirelessly to recruit vendors, raise money, collect item donations, and plan out all of the logistics.

Today marked the event’s 5th year and I have to say that this is my favorite day of the year and in my opinion and one of the best events we host. Nothing beats the sounds of laughing children, the sights of ear to ear smiles, and infectious feeling of love and community.

Over the years, the event now has added features such as:

- resource fair 📋
- petting zoo 🐇
- rock climbing 🧗
- face painting 🎨
- vaccinations 💉
- haircuts & braiding 💇‍♂️
- free food trucks 🌮
- kids activity zone 🏀
- bicycle repair 🚲

The event now serves over 2,500 families in our community and has drawn the support and participation from some amazing community partners.

Thank you to our HUSD staff and volunteers! 🙏

SERVE THE PEOPLE custom cat eye sunglasses, inspired by @rachelwolfepack's incredible mural at @westoaklandmuralproject honoring women of the Black Panther Party

We were honored to donate several custom pairs of sunglasses to @oscargrantfoundation for this year’s annual gala back in February. Oscar Grant was killed by BART police in 2009, a tragedy which inspired the film Fruitvale Station by Ryan Cooler.

This year is the 60th anniversary of the Black Panther Party, for Self-Defense, founded in Oakland by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. The Black Panthers first gained recognition for providing community patrols to protect citizens from police violence in Oakland.

Happy Mother’s Day to the Mothers of the Movement, especially the mothers of Eric Garner, Oscar Grant, Gary Hopkins, and Amir Brooks.

It’s always bittersweet. We celebrate you today, but we also hold the weight of what brought us here. Your strength, advocacy, and refusal to be silent continue to shape the fight for justice.

Grateful for your presence and contribution to the Garner documentary. Your voices matter. Your love endures.
