5 years ago, Reverend Wanda Johnson called me to see if she could expand the Oscar Grant Foundation’s Backpack & School Supplies Giveway from one school site to the district at large. Her vision was to do a district-wide event so that more of our HUSD students could feel the love and community as we welcome them back to school with free backpacks and supplies.

The vision was presented to staff and they fell in love with the idea and event. They immediately got to work. They worked tirelessly to recruit vendors, raise money, collect item donations, and plan out all of the logistics.

Today marked the event’s 5th year and I have to say that this is my favorite day of the year and in my opinion and one of the best events we host. Nothing beats the sounds of laughing children, the sights of ear to ear smiles, and infectious feeling of love and community.

Over the years, the event now has added features such as:

- resource fair 📋
- petting zoo 🐇
- rock climbing 🧗
- face painting 🎨
- vaccinations 💉
- haircuts & braiding 💇‍♂️
- free food trucks 🌮
- kids activity zone 🏀
- bicycle repair 🚲

The event now serves over 2,500 families in our community and has drawn the support and participation from some amazing community partners.

Thank you to our HUSD staff and volunteers! 🙏

❤️ Because of you, 1,000 people will enjoy a warm meal this Saturday.

To every donor, volunteer, sponsor, and supporter of 5 Sikh Seva, thank you.
Your kindness is more than a donation.

It becomes a warm meal for someone who needs it.
It becomes hope for a family.
It becomes a reminder that no one in our community should face hardship alone.

This Saturday, we will proudly serve 1,000 free, freshly prepared vegetarian meals at the Hayward Unified Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway.

If you or your family need a meal, please come see us.
No questions asked.
No judgment.
Just a warm meal and a community that cares.
We are here for you.

If you believe in this mission, we invite you to help us continue it.
Become a monthly supporter and make your kindness someone’s next meal.

Grateful to be invited to @oscargrantfoundation to educate the youth in our community! This workshop kicked off with our Education and Empowerment Coordinator, Terryal, explaining how trauma caused by experiences such as human trafficking, gun violence, and homelessness can impact a person's focus on school or work, while also reminding the youth that healing is possible and there are ways to overcome these challenges to create a better life and brighter future 🫶
