Ultima 2026 – Høstkaravane 🍂

A unique encounter between the songs of Gisle Kverndokk and the powerful percussion world of Adriana Hölszky’s Karawane.

Directed by Victoria Bomann-Larsen, with musical direction by Magnus Loddgard, the performance brought Kverndokk’s intimate songs together with 12 percussionists, surrounding the audience in a vibrant landscape of drums, gongs, cymbals, bells, metal and sound.

The songs, rooted in Scandinavian poetry, explored autumn, rivers, solitude, mortality and renewal — creating an intimate and existential space within Hölszky’s vast sonic world.

It was a beautiful and inspiring experience to be part of this project — an evening where music, performers and audience came together in a truly immersive encounter. ✨

Thank you to everyone involved for making this special project possible!

We are incredibly proud of our two KHiO Opera alumni, Anne Beth Solvang, who has been awarded the Wilhelmsen Prize, and Victoria Randem, who has received the Young Lindeman Prize.

We would also like to extend our warmest congratulations to conductor Edle Stray-Pedersen, recipient of this year’s Lindeman Prize.

Such well-deserved recognition for three outstanding artists! 👏🎶

«Ny norsk musikk kan også berøre et publikum» forteller komponist Gisle Kverndokk, som har arrangert sangsykluser skrevet gjennom fire tiår, på nytt.

I Høstkaravane 12. september på Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo møter hans sanger Adriana Hölszkys musikk for slagverk, hvor tolv slagverkere omringer publikum – inntil en stemme begynner å synge.

✨ We’ve just wrapped up the second week of the semester, and what a start it has been!

Already in our very first week, we were incredibly lucky to welcome the wonderful soprano Kathleen O’Mara 😱🎶 Kathleen joined us to share insights from her own journey as a young artist and treated our students to some beautiful singing. What an inspiring way to kick off the semester!

Our students — both new and returning — are ready for another exciting semester filled with music, learning and new experiences. We can’t wait to see what the coming months will bring! ❤️

Kathleen O’Mara was recently awarded 1st Prize at the 2025 Queen Sonja Singing Competition, as well as 1st Prize and the Birgit Nilsson Prize at the 2024 Operalia Competition. She is a graduate of LA Opera’s Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program and a 2024 recipient of the prestigious Sara Tucker Study Grant from the Richard Tucker Foundation.

Thank you, Kathleen, for sharing your journey and artistry with us! 🌟

The Academy of Opera, KHiO, had the great pleasure of welcoming Dominic Wheeler, Head of Opera Studies at Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Artistic Director of Opera Makers in London.
Opera Makers brings together Guildhall’s opera and composer students in collaboration with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, creating a unique platform for developing and bringing new opera to life.
It was especially inspiring to discover how much this model resonates with the collaboration we have here at the Academy of Opera, KHiO, with the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH) and the Oslo Philharmonic – bringing young singers, composers and musicians together around the creation and performance of new classical vocal music.
Many inspiring conversations and new perspectives. Great to exchange ideas about how we can create the best possible environments for creating new classical vocal pieces and operas together with young students. @oslooperaacademy @musikkhogskolen @henrik.hellstenius @opera by @oslooperaacademy
