Congratulations to the OSU-led team on receiving a nearly $7 million USDA grant to advance the future of fresh-market blueberry harvesting! 🫐

Led by the Department of Horticulture's Wei Yang at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center, the four-year HarvesterCAP project brings together expertise in engineering, horticulture, postharvest science, food safety, economics and stakeholder engagement to develop innovative harvesting technologies for blueberries.

The team will explore AI and automation to help harvest berries gently and efficiently while improving fruit quality, reducing losses and supporting the long-term sustainability of the blueberry industry.

Congratulations to the entire research team on this exciting achievement! 🎉

Hop Harvest!! Thanks to Indie Hops and Goschie Farms for hosting Dean Staci Simonich for hop harvest.

Farm crews were in full swing harvesting Luminosa®️ hops, a new varietal introduced by Indie Hops in 2022 and bred at OSU by hop breeder Shaun Townsend. In addition to commercial hop harvest, Dr. Townsend and OSU students harvested experimental hops from an Indie Hops research plot located at Goschie Farms.

This partnership highlights university research in partnership with Portland-based Indie Hops to develop distinctive new hop varieties for the craft brewing community. A flavorful endeavor, from seed to sip! 🍻 by @osuagsci

September is National Potato Month! 🥔

Did you know potatoes are Oregon’s state vegetable? Oregon is the fourth-largest potato-producing state in the U.S., with potatoes playing an important role in agriculture and rural communities across the state.

Research and Extension centers in Klamath Falls, Hermiston, and Malheur County all contribute to potato research, helping Oregon growers meet the challenges of producing one of the state’s most important crops.

Here’s to celebrating Oregon potatoes! 🌱 by @osuagsci

Behind every great glass of Oregon wine is a lot of research. 🍷

Recent stories in SevenFifty Daily and Oregon Wine Press spotlight research from CAS faculty Dr. Patty Skinkis and Dr. James Osborne.

Dr. Skinkis is helping growers navigate today’s challenging wine market, including research on temporarily idling vineyards to reduce costs while preserving the potential for future production. Her decade-long crop-load research also found that Oregon growers can increase yields without compromising wine quality.

Dr. Osborne, director of the Oregon Wine Research Institute, is studying how naturally occurring wine microbes can help control spoilage organisms like Brettanomyces, potentially improving wine quality while reducing reliance on sulfur dioxide.

From the vineyard to the cellar, OSU research is helping Oregon’s wine industry become more efficient, sustainable and innovative. 🍇
