We take for granted how much of our food was carefully created to be what it is today. The perfect texture, the right balance of sweetness and savoriness, the flavors we have come to expect from the things we eat.

Honeyboat squash is a beautiful example of Oregon’s history of plant breeding. Developed at Oregon State University and released in 1990, this variety of delicata was bred for flavor, and it shows. Its flesh is dense, deeply orange, and exceptionally sweet.

At Lilia, we’re serving Honeyboat in tempura with a Castelvetrano olive salsa verde. The acidity of the salsa cuts through the richness of the fried batter, while the salinity of the olives balances the natural sweetness of the squash. It’s a dish that manages to be rich and bright at the same time.

If it were me, I’d have it tonight with a classic martini as my first taste of the evening. at

What happens inside a grapevine when it’s exposed to smoke? Scientists are examining the genetic and molecular responses triggered by smoke stress—and finding that grape varieties don’t all react in the same way.

These new insights could give winemakers better tools for managing fire and smoke events, from improving smoke taint diagnostics to developing new ways to protect grapes and treat smoke-affected wine. This week, Simone Madden-Grey speaks with researchers around the world who are uncovering the science behind grapevines’ response to smoke. ✍️ Simone Madden-Grey 📸 Dr. Kerry Wilkinson adelaideuni @lifeatgallo @oregonstate @osuagsci @cassegrainwines

Today, October 1st, was our last harvest of 2026–Merlot x Rootstock Trial. We have been evaluating basics here, including yield, cluster metrics, ripeness and pruning weights since 2023. The fruit is always the last to come in for the cultivar x rootstock project but is beautiful. It reaches good maturity for a cool climate region.

The grapes not used for research is made into commercial wines. Last year the OSU winery made it into a rosé. This year, the fruit will go into table wine by Mindless Wines!

PhD candidate Kirsty Ballard recently helped deploy two satellite tags as part of an ongoing fisheries study on black cod (sablefish). While these tags are major components of shark research, the technology can be applied to answer numerous other biological questions!

A tag records where an animal goes, how deep it dives, and the water temperature it experiences. That is useful well beyond sharks, particularly when it comes to managing fisheries and deciding where protections matter most.

Pinot noir rootstock trial number 1 was harvested on 09/16/2026. The trial includes Pinot noir on 18 rootstocks, and we get cluster counts, yield weights, and sub sample clusters in the field. Then we have two days of lab analyses that takes place—cluster metrics, juicing, and basic chemical analysis, sample aliquots are then frozen and later analyzed for more detailed chemistry once harvest is over.

We had a great team at Roserock Vineyard to harvest this trial, including Kitty Lee Anderson, Abigail Sriram, Brynn Bradley and volunteer, Lisa Z.

What a beautiful day for generating data!
