The Barricade Podcast is Now Live!

This is a podcast launched by OTD/OP (currently only in English) to highlight stories of working class struggle and develop the political analysis we need to fight and win.

The very first episode is focused on neighbourhood organizing and popular power, interviewing Hamna and Steve - two members of Off the Defensive who were involved in organizing our founding conference. They speak about their experience of neighbourhood organizing in Toronto, the lessons they have learned, and how OTD/OP will help us take the fight in our neighbourhoods to the next level.

Right now, the episode can be found on apple podcasts and spotify, or directly on the libsyn site.

Despite attempts at repressing their efforts, Norgate tenants continue to organize! One door at a time, they’re building the solidarity and collective power it takes to stand up to large financialized landlords who, beyond their profits, hold no regard for them. by @otd.op

Tenants of 3434 Eglinton Avenue East, working with OTD Toronto, have organized their building into the East Scarborough Tenants Union (ESTU) to take on big landlord Starlight Investments and MetCap property management. Through collective action, tenants have won campaigns around hot water and balcony conditions, and have forced the landlord to sit down and negotiate collectively with them.
To learn more about this experience, we are joined by Carolyn, one of the leaders within 3434 Eglinton and a member of OTD Toronto. In the course of our conversation, we talk about how tenants got in touch with OTD and started organizing, the actions that have been taken, the wins, the issues remaining, and the strengths and weaknesses of the organizing effort so far. We also talk about the impressive ways in which organizers in Toronto have combined confrontational organizing with community-building work.
If you are a tenant, or have any interest in neighbourhood organizing, don’t miss this one!
*NOTE: We will not be releasing any Barricade episodes in October, but we will be back to publishing regularly at the beginning of November! by @otd.op

The tenants of the Bonanza building have been dealing with a broken elevator for more than 70 days!! Elderly, disabled and working-class tenants were left without a working elevator and no communication from the management for the reasons for a month.

Seniors and tenants with disabilities were forced to crawl up and down the stairs. Some were hurt trying to carry daily essentials.

After 57 days with minimal communication from the owner, the tenants came together to make demands to the landlord-
* Provide a clear date for the elevator to be fixed.
* Refund 50% of the rents for every month the elevator is unrepaird.
* Provide a new elevator as the current one is at the end of its life.

The owner did not respond directly to any of these requests for support to the owner. Instead of taking action to support the tenants, they placed the blame on the Elevator company and the complexity of the logistics for repair. This is a pattern we have seen every time there is an issue in a building. These landlords are hard to reach and when they do get back, they shift the blame onto others.

After more than 70 days of tenants coming together and pressuring the landlord, the elevator has finally been fixed. However, the landlord has not refunded the tenants. The tenants are moving forward and taking collective action to obtain compensation for the lack of service for two months, because we have seen that if we don’t collectively take actions, these landlords love to keep their pockets full and not spend on repairs. by @otd.op

In July we released an episode with members of Off the Defensive/Offensive populaire Montreal, talking about their organizing in the Norgate complex in the Ville Saint-Laurent neighbourhood. Since that episode was released, the landlords of the Norgate buildings have launched a lawsuit against OTD/OP organizers and tenants of the buildings in a transparent attempt to scare people away from organizing. In this episosde, we are joined by Lyn and Nick of OP Montreal to talk about these latest developments, how OP and the tenants are responding, and how those of us outside Montreal can support.

Each of our neighbourhoods is one front in a wider struggle. A win for working class tenants in Montreal is a win for working class people everywhere. If you want to stand against lawfare by landlords, please donate to the OP Montreal and the Norgate tenants’ legal defense fund via the link in the episode notes! by @otd.op

Solidarity with our comrades in the Norgate buildings and with OP - Montréal.

Tenants are getting organized, and are doing what it takes to demand decent conditions from the city and their landlord... and as a response... petty and desperate lawfare.

But we're not scared, they are - because they know theyre nothing if we aren't cowed and divided, but that we're unstoppable when we get organized.
