Practice, theory, practice, building People's Power

Since the beginning of our study group we have been working towards the launch of a chapter of Off The Defensive, right here in Red Deer. The main role of the study group was to rally revolutionary potential that we otherwise wouldn't have met, while also giving our organizers a shared theoretical basis for our organizing. We've achieved our goals and now it's time to transition to our next step, that of Off The Defensive

Off The Defensive - working class power in our neighbourhoods

Geographic power is essential in truly challenging the capitalists and landlords who run our country. OTD aims to fill this role, to unite organizers from across the country into a collective struggle for real democratic people's power in our cities, in our neighbourhoods. Through the use of Social Investigation and Class Analysis (SICA), this is the role we hope to fill here in Red Deer, a city crying for the need of a path forward out of the muck we are all stuck in.

What's next?

There is still much work to do and we can't do it alone. We will be holding a launch event on Oct 24th at 2pm at the Riverside Meadows community shack ( 6021 57 Ave, Red Deer, AB T4N 6G3 ) where we will explain more about our findings, the next steps needed in our city to advance the struggle of the working class and how you can get involved. Things only get better when we connect and work together, our aim is that OTD Red Deer will fill that missing connection and be a center for revolutionary potential here in Red Deer.

STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY: Offensive Populaire rejects the use of lawsuits by wealthy landlords to silence tenants.

@slam.matu , the Montreal Autonomous Tenants Union (SLAM) was hit with an injunction for organizing with neighbours against a rent increase. The injunction acts to restrict the union’s public organizing.

That’s why last night our members took the initiative to flyer an Agence Station Bleue event in solidarity. Station Bleue is a talent agency owned by landlords Gabriel Paré and Annick-Patricia Carrière, who have hit their tenants with rent increases and have taken to the courts rather than sit down and negotiate with the union.

We stand with SLAM and people organizing despite frivolous lawfare that threatens our ability to organize for better living conditions.
The political character of these lawsuits cannot be ignored: they are meant to muzzle political organizing.

Not everything is for sale. Wealth can’t manufacture solidarity- and we’ve got lots of that!

On Sunday of September 27th, several of the tenants of the Norgate housing complex in Saint-Laurent met for a General Assembly. They were able to further discuss about the living conditions in their apartments and to decide on the next steps in their ongoing struggle.

Important demands of a collective nature were proposed, voted and adopted: the tenants therefore affirmed their commitment to organise together to take them forward.

Present in logistical support of the event, members of Offensive Populaire Montréal and the Association étudiante du cégep de Saint-Laurent (AECSL) also prepared and served a good variety of food to the Norgate community.

More news coming soon!

____

Despite attempts at repressing their efforts, Norgate tenants continue to organize! One door at a time, they’re building the solidarity and collective power it takes to stand up to large financialized landlords who, beyond their profits, hold no regard for them.

The tenants of the Bonanza building have been dealing with a broken elevator for more than 70 days!! Elderly, disabled and working-class tenants were left without a working elevator and no communication from the management for the reasons for a month.

Seniors and tenants with disabilities were forced to crawl up and down the stairs. Some were hurt trying to carry daily essentials.

After 57 days with minimal communication from the owner, the tenants came together to make demands to the landlord-
* Provide a clear date for the elevator to be fixed.
* Refund 50% of the rents for every month the elevator is unrepaird.
* Provide a new elevator as the current one is at the end of its life.

The owner did not respond directly to any of these requests for support to the owner. Instead of taking action to support the tenants, they placed the blame on the Elevator company and the complexity of the logistics for repair. This is a pattern we have seen every time there is an issue in a building. These landlords are hard to reach and when they do get back, they shift the blame onto others.

After more than 70 days of tenants coming together and pressuring the landlord, the elevator has finally been fixed. However, the landlord has not refunded the tenants. The tenants are moving forward and taking collective action to obtain compensation for the lack of service for two months, because we have seen that if we don’t collectively take actions, these landlords love to keep their pockets full and not spend on repairs.

Here’s a look back at our first year, from the conference to the work on the ground. This is only the beginning ✊🏽
