SAVE THE DATE: opening 9/19 6-10PM over at the @the_plan_chicago “if-if-if-“ a show about language falling apart & coming together.

Less a “language as material” show and more a poetic or productive conceptualism, the ambition of this exhibition is to embody a meeting point somewhere between visual language, comic book sound effects, and political screed. Operating on the premise that radical form might open up radical practice, the idea is to consider what can, can’t, and still is left to be said in words and language - semantic, formally liberated, artful, or otherwise.

Topics will include: palindromes, silence, distortion, song, phonetics, symmetry, sign & signifier, diatribe, babbles, polyphony, voice overs, translation, onomatopoeia, asemic and poetic writing, slogans, roots, punctuation, and whispers among others.

Opening night performance: “A Catalytic ‘Huh!’ of Asemic Writing” formulated by and featuring Jesse Malmed, Max Guy, Maya Nguyen, Rex Delafkaran, & myself will punctuate the proceedings.

Hope @@@@@ to *********** see 👀 👀 👀 you !!!!!! taken in Wordle by @otherchrisreeves

SANTA FE: final dedication piece of the year, this one for Fluxus “cloudsmith” Geoffrey Hendricks. As part of the @newmexicoartmuseum Santa Fe Symposium Fluxus (10/15 - 10/17) Lauren and I will think about cloud collecting and making, that there’s no tax on clouds, that the pareidolia of the contemporary is that sweet spot in between things, where Hendricks’ life and art converged. Some dreamy ideas under the drama of New Mexico’s skies and tired Allsups. If you happen to be nearby (or already there!) come join us ☁️

Images:
All by Geoffrey Hendricks: “Ring Piece,” 1971, “Sky Car,” 1979, “Sky Window Shade,” 1987 “Sky Postcard,” ca. 1976, “Sky Boots,” 1965

For the opening of “if-if-if-“ over at @the_plan_chicago next Saturday (9/19) is a little takeaway book in an edition of 70. Like the show itself, the book is a searching through the ineffable hirsute or shave legged spirits of language, a miniature primer on not knowing where to go next and the words, images, and ideas that follow. Come get one next weekend and see all this lovely work by some of Chicago’s (and beyond) very best 👀 😶 by @otherchrisreeves

3. Underground heroes of Cincinnati

‼️ Two sweet events this weekend: scroll through for the Chicago deep dish on both 👉

Above: As part of Laurel Hauge’s @laurelhauge work for “Ground Floor” opening Sunday Aug. 9th, I will lead a short workshop/class from 4:30 - 5:30PM around 1.) curating with what you have 2.) curating with relation to everything else 3.) curating for others. We will read an excerpt of a critical text by artist Josh Kline, consider some ideas on approaching expanded notions of curating, and put on an ad-hoc exhibition of our own all on the beautiful lake views of Promontory Point.

👈 happening right after this 👆 lotsa favorites in here

During this class we’ll talk about finding symmetry, visually (and thus ideologically and maybe even curatorially). Examples above:
TOP AND BOTTOM: Patty Prava performing “La Danza Di Zorba” on Italian Variety Show Premiatissima, January 12, 1984; Still from “Draftee Daffy”, 1945, Dir. Bob Clampett; L-R SIDES: Leda Papaconstantinou’s theatrical series, “Bouboulitsa’s Dream,” 2013; Still from TV Transvestite, 1982, Dirs. Michele Capozzi and Simone Di Bagno CENTER: Patssi Valdez, ASCO, “The Universe,” at Evergreen Cemetary, 1974.

@breanne_ & I are putting the band back together: Nancy and the Voids will be performing the hits of Neil Young with you on vocals (and maybe even on instruments?) as part of @betsyodom1 ‘s wonderful event at Berger Park this Friday at 5:45 and again at 7:15PM. Details are 👉

A day of community singing, jamming, and music making. Join in song circles hosted by Chicago musicians Andrea Bunch, Marty Calden, Mark Dvorjak, Chris Reeves with Breanne Trammell, and Betsy Odem. Free - all ages bring your instrument, your voices, and come play!

Full schedule over at @romansusanart

Biggest fans only (like Moe)

Takeaway publications at both event! The seminal street rag on music setlists “Set List” will be yours for the taking on Friday &&&

“Lessons in (Curating (With Care))” is available for all who turn up to participate during the class on Sunday.
Hope to see you! by @otherchrisreeves

Excited to announce I have a chapter in the Routledge Companion to Performance Art on Fluxus artist Benjamin Patterson. It was written a few years ago (before I knew the subtitle of your wonderful book @performing_chance sorry for the symmetry!) and before that was one I started all the way back in 2014 in the incredible class I had with Sampada Aranke. Patterson is one of the most important Fluxus artists in that I think he and his work trouble its utopian tenor for the better, an argument I try and make here. The book itself is wonderful and massive with so many favorites (Reiko Tomii, Erin Manning, Amelia Jones, Yelena Gluzman, etc) covering a wide swath of performance practice. It’s prohibitively expensive but the e-book is at most libraries and on…the internet (but DM me if you want to read mine) ❤️ by @otherchrisreeves
