It's time for gathering around the table. This autumn we're launching two new placemat sets.

These are our Pop placemats, made from woven and joined oak and thick vegetable tanned leather, finished with laced wrapped handles. These larger mats are six to a set and comfortable fit a full place setting. We paid particular attention to the shaping of the frame to give an lovely action and ergonomic handle.

The pop was a woven reed mat used in ancient Mayan tradition, for gathering and symbolised the union of community., a reference we've considered for the woven timber base.

These will be available in our full range of vegetable tanned leathers and either oiled or fumed English oak. by @otziltd

There’s poetry in things made slowly, where every mark of the hand has meaning. In the workshop with Otzi Studio founder Otis Ingrams, we discover a practice shaped by material and an uncompromising attention to the overlooked.

Pithos laundry baskets from the workshop, in London tan, Midnight blue and Conker. Headed out to NYC.

These are the largest baskets we make, crafted from a whole side of oak bark bridle leather. The lids are carefully machined solid cork, tapered to fit the body and paired with some beautifully burred London plane handles. by @otziltd

A pair of side tables made with @anewday_interiordesign and @schemeinterior. These are a take on our Taper side tables, using elements of stitch work from our ottoman series. A zig zag stitch set in heavy linen thread paired with a warm grey suede.

The tops are a beautifully grained London plane with inset leather coaster patches, inviting a glass or cup to rest.

These have been a great project to work on; Andrew's playful mix of texture, colour and detail have given these pieces a real striking elegance.

We love working with designers to create new and interesting pieces, applying our skills and techniques in unconventional ways. by @otziltd

We've been making a wide range of our Cinch collection of late.

As we can configure the leatherwork to be either leathercord, strap weave or wrapped sling, there are a huge number of timber and leather colour combinations- over a hundred in all.
This gives designers huge flexibility when putting the Cinch in schemes, from fumed oak and charcoal black to a lighter elm and russet. by @otziltd

A walk in the woods on a balmy summer's day; almost nothing better. Led by forester Andrew Falcon, we toured through a beautiful area on the edge of the Norfolk broads. Andrew has managed these woods for over thirty years, experimenting with new silviculture practices and techniques, some of his own innovation.

The woods here were planted for varying purposes, some to produce wood for furniture, some for poles, some for firewood. Some have been more successful than others due to planting strategies. Changing the spacing and the species profile gives remarkable differences over the same timespan of twenty years or so.

In amongst these planted woods were incredible alder trees on the banks of the broads, ancient oaks and beeches some 2-300 years old.

Viewing timber as a crop rather than an incidental aspect of the landscape is an important perspective that we need to consider. With so many uses for timber it is vital to get the most out of the trees. The wildlife and biodiversity increase and maintenance is of course, crucial, but it is an adjacent purpose or narrative rather than the primary reason.

After our treebathing, feeling refreshed and definitely more learned, we moved on to our workshop to look at the types of timber we use in our furniture and objects.

Having well managed forest and woodland is vital to our ability in the UK to cut down on imported timber, still currently around 80%. We have built relationships with a number of sawmills and timber yards both in East Anglia and nationwide, giving us access to the wonderful range of native timbers we have.

Our walk was part of @woodlandheritage incredible nationwide walks and workshops tour programme. by @otziltd
