Built out of spite… and it’s still standing nearly 200 years later. 😂

The Alexandria Spite House was built in 1830 by John Hollensbury, who reportedly wanted to stop carriage traffic from using the alley beside his home.

The result? A house that’s only about 7 feet wide and 25 feet deep—built directly into the alley. It’s one of the narrowest houses in the United States.

Our 4th South Carolina homeschool field trip took us to Congaree National Park for a kayaking tour with @Carolina_Outdoor_Adventures! 🛶

We’re learning about South Carolina’s land and the state’s six regions, so getting out on the water to explore the Inner Coastal Plain was the perfect hands-on experience. As we paddled through Congaree, our guide taught us about the landscape, waterways, trees, history, and everything that makes this area so unique.

The tour was really kid-friendly, and we felt very well taken care of with their 4:1 guide-to-guest ratio. It was also so educational! They even provide waterproof phone cases, which was incredibly helpful while we were out on the water. 🙌🏻

Bonus: We saw an otter 😍 and some owls along the way! I wasn’t able to get video of them, but those unexpected wildlife sightings made the experience even more memorable. 🦦🦉

Definitely recommend booking with @Carolina_Outdoor_Adventures for a unique way to explore Congaree National Park!

Our third South Carolina homeschool field trip! 📚🦣

We headed to the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia to wrap up our unit on Ancient South Carolina, where we got to see some of the animals that once lived here—including a mastodon, giant armadillo, and saber-toothed cat.

And then we ended up exploring the rest of the museum too! From South Carolina habitats to old mill machinery and the Best Friend of Charleston, there was so much to see.

Also…homeschool admission was exactly $0. 😂🙌🏻

I love finding ways to turn what we’re learning into real-life adventures right here in South Carolina. ❤️

One of our favorite views from our recent Gatlinburg trip! 🏔️
Gatlinburg SkyPark was such a fun stop—we rode the chairlift up, walked across the SkyBridge, and took in those incredible Smoky Mountain views. And yes, the glass-bottom section definitely made some of us a little nervous 😅
It was STINKIN’ hot 🥵 so we didn’t spend much time hiking, but it is a neat place to explore

If you’re visiting Myrtle Beach, don’t skip Huntington Beach State Park ☀️ 🌊

This is one of our favorite places to get away from the crowds and experience a completely different side of Myrtle Beach.

🦎 Alligators + incredible birds at Alligator Alley
🏛️ South Carolina history at Atalaya Castle
🐢 Touch pools + exhibits at the nature center
🏖️ Three miles of beautiful, undeveloped beach

We love that you can get wildlife, history, nature AND beach time all in one stop. It’s definitely worth setting aside a day to explore!

Planning to hike Grotto Falls in Great Smoky Mountains National Park?

TL;DR: Get your parking tag before heading up the mountain, arrive early because parking fills up fast, and don’t rush back afterward—exploring the historic cabins along the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail was one of our favorite parts of the day!

And if you’re lucky, you might even spot some wildlife along the way 🐻👀🥰

For our second South Carolina homeschool field trip, we went looking for something millions of years old🦈👀

We each have our own collection of shark teeth from all the times we’ve gone hunting before, so we printed off a field guide and tried to identify some of the shark teeth we’ve already found.

And then we couldn’t help but go find more. 😂 I love finding ways to turn the things we already love into opportunities to learn more about South Carolina. ❤️
