‘Can Modern Fashion Really Claim to be Creative? - Unleashing Fashion’s Radical Imagination’ written by @sara.k.arnold, now on Substack (also as audio recording).

This long read is part of the article series ‘Reclaim Your Creativity’ which considers imagination and creativity in fashion as a necessity for economic and societal transformation. As a Call to Action for Fashion Creatives, it concerns not just professional industry creatives, but anyone interested in creative thinking and practice, or concerned with society’s creative capacity.

Subscribe to our Substack through the link in our bio to get the next in the series straight to your inbox. Sara will be exploring: politicising fashion practice; democratising the fashion system; Radically re-imagining fashion enterprise; and dismantling the dominant industrial fashion system.

The OurCommon.Market Journal has moved to Substack!

Members of @fashion_act_now have been running OurCommon.Market for the last two years. We built an online hub for community-based clothing and textile projects, launched the OC.M Atlas to map clubs, community workshops and maker spaces worldwide and promote their events here on Instagram to encourage participation in local clothing culture. We also focussed on creating visibility for community-centred fashion and clothing projects through articles and photo stories on the OC.M Journal.

The OC.M Journal is a place for stories on fashion and clothing projects that prioritise people and the planet and (re)make clothes in very many creative ways. Instead of publishing stories and articles on our website, we’re moving to Substack.

The mission stays the same: bringing visibility to those marginalised by big fashion. Telling stories about fashion culture that isn’t about selling clothes to fuel economic growth but that emerges from the group up and isn’t dictated by the industry.

You can expect stories from pluriversal clothing cultures, community-spotlights and everything related to community fashion practices, defashion and system change in fashion. Plus, @sara.k.arnold’s article series “Reclaim Your Creativity: A Call to Action for Fashion Creatives”.

Subscribe and read our first articles through the link in our bio. By joining the party we hope to engage you and to reach a wider audience of fashion sustainability and system change enthusiasts.

It’s not fashion week but this week is the biggest week of the year for fashion activism, sustainable and community-centred fashion practices.

Fashion Revolution’s annual Fashion Revolution Week brings together fashion activist from around the world for a seven-day global campaign around the 24th of April to commemorate the anniversary of the Rana Plaza disaster.

This year’s Fashion Revolution Theme is ‘Collective Action’, calling on people worldwide to move beyond individual action, to reclaim and embrace collective power – from community organising to street protest and mending in public – to tackle overproduction, exploitation and inequality in fashion.

With Remake.World in the US and Fashion Revolution CIC UK being forced to wind down their operations due to funding difficulties – integral leaders in the fight for transparency, accountability, labour and climate justice in the fashion sector – we need collective fashion activism more than ever. Join in!

Here are eight events that are and aren’t part of Fashion Revolution Week. You can find even more events to get involved and act collectively on our repost page and

Open Studio 79 @openstudio79, founded by @tatianasarasa in the fishermen’s area of Palma de Mallorca, has functioned as a community space for artisans and place for experimentation, creation and collective crafting rooted in the rich textile traditions of Mallorca and the Balearic Islands for more than ten years.

While @tatianasarasa now mostly uses it as her art studio, its core values of defence of nature, its elements and living craftsmanship live on in everything Tatiana does. To maintain the artisanal textile culture of the island and a connection to land, nature and locality – increasingly threatened by mass tourism and its environmental and cultural impacts – Tatinana shares her skills in natural dyeing, spinning, weaving natural fibres and more. She now offers her workshops through La Escuela Artesana @laescuelaartesana, a collective of local artisans in Inca, the heart of Mallorca.

For Tatiana, teaching textile knowledge is not just about passing on skills and practices to younger generations, but also about connecting with people and creating long-term bonds. Join her upcoming workshops on indigo growing and dyeing!

Read the full article “Mallorcan Threads: How artisans are Turning Heritage into Resistance”, including a video interview with Tatiana by Sophie Ganzalez Alegre Monseau on the OC.M Journal, link in bio.

Everyone is talking about the importance of being in and building community in this time of crises. At OC.M, we believe that coming together to craft and make is a great way to form community, find support and perhaps an entry point into forming mutual aid networks and collective action. Get involved in your local clothing culture!

Here are 8events and communities that you can join throughout March. For more events details refer to tagged organisations.

Reclaiming craft as resistance - and rebuilding community stitch by stitch.

In our latest OC.M Journal feature, @sara.k.arnold explores how @craft_forward’s radical knitting practice offers an antidote to late-stage capitalism. Through slow and communal making the group’s work challenges hyper-consumerism and opens space for connection, care and collective creativity.

In a world shaped by burnout, extraction and relentless speed, Craft Forward turn to yarn, hands and community as a tool for healing and quiet rebellion. Their approach reminds us that craft is not just technique - it’s a way of resisting isolation, nurturing relationships and reshaping how we value labour, time and each other.

Craft Forward’s ‘Blankets for London’ project produced 221 handmade blankets for unhoused Londoners in 2024 and has collaborated with many charities across the city and has since expanded into ‘Blankets for the World.’ Join @craft_forward’s Crafty Movie Night on 15th December at Coldharbour Blue in London.

Meet Leila and Ellen from @tamarisk_farm , an organic produce and wool farm at the jurassic coast in Dorset.

Leila, farmer and seamstress, wears a hand- knitted jumper and her mum Ellen wears a wool shawl and hand-knitted waistcoat, all made from wool from their own flock of sheep. The farm’s varied flock of heritage breed sheep create an earthy pallet of undyed, natural wool shades which is spun into quality yarns and sold at the farm. 🐑

The family-owned Tamarisk farm cherishes sustainable agriculture, managing 600 acres of mostly National Teust owned land in wildlife friendly ways, growing cereals and raising cattle and sheep.

Find out more about Tamarisk Farm and find alternative clothing, fashion and textile initiatives to join in your area on the OC.M Atlas on OurCommon.Market.

Do you run or are part of an alternative, regenerative fashion and clothing project?
We believe community-based clothing, fashion and textile practices deserve visibility.
Fill in the form through the link in our bio to list your community or micro-enterprise on the OC.M Atlas and connect with likeminded people near and far.

Together, we hope to help grow communities like yours! 💚🫂

We invite community-based fashion and textile practitioners from around the world to join our next assembly to connect and strengthen our network of solidarity!

In this participatory event, we hope to hear everyone’s voices. We’d love to know about your on-the-ground realities or your projects and organisations and the principles and values that drive you. What are your ideas for alternatives, struggles and concerns? How can we collectively overcome them?

We’ll be attending the Degrowth Conference in Oslo at the End of June. Our intention is to present this community, giving a snapshot of the landscape of community-based clothing and textile practices and what’s needed to help them thrive.

We are running this event twice to accommodate different time zones and schedules.

Thursday, 5 June:
7-8.30am London, 9-10.30am Bucharest, 12-1-30pm Dhaka, 1-2.30pm Jakarta, 3-4.30pm Tokyo, 4-5.30pm Sydney, 6-7.30pm Aukland

Friday, 6 June:
5.30-7pm London/Dublin, 6.30-8pm Berlin, 7.30-9pm Athens, 10-11-30pm Chennai, 9.30-11am Vancouver, 10.30-12am Mexico City, 12.30-2pm New York

Join and discuss how we might begin to make these shifts. This assembly is a little different in which we have no “expert panel” but all those joining are considered experts. No previous knowledge required, all are welcome to contribute or just come to listen. 💚🫂

Join OurCommon.Market at @kairoscounterclub and help shape the fashion and cultural commons!

‘The Fashion Commons: Reclaiming our Clothing Culture’ is a participatory event co-hosted by @ourcommon.market at @kairoscounterclub on Wednesday, May 14th, 7pm, doors & drinks at 6.30pm.

We’ll hear a series of short provocations on the fashion commons from speakers including anthropologist Sandra Niessen (@fashion_act_now), Alice Holloway (@londonurbantc & The Remakery Makerspace), textile systems designer @zoegilbertson (Liflad and South West Textile Commons) and Nick Evans (@fantasyfibremill ).

We’ll ask and ideate: How can alternative models gain traction? How can diverse clothing culture flourish? What challenges are keeping them in the margins? What rights of fashion commoners need to be protected and how?

Join and discuss how we might begin to make these shifts. No previous knowledge required. All are welcome to contribute or just come to listen. 💚🫂
