This course comes from a simple truth: working with artisans and preserving old ways of being is not about staying in the past — it’s about remembering our roots so we can create better futures. It’s an invitation to designers, makers, and business entrepreneurs to pause and ask: What kind of ancestor do I want to be? And how might my choices today echo seven generations from now? Fashion and design continue to desire the look of handmade, but too often without the deep relational, cultural, and spiritual connections that true craft carries. We remain, in many ways, in an extraction mindset. This course offers another path — one grounded in relationship, reciprocity, and care. A chance to think and do enterprise differently. Co-Create with Artisans is a 4-week, online, self-paced course with videos, worksheets, checklists, and process maps to support meaningful, lasting relationships with artisan producers across cultures. In this participatory event – co-hosted by OurCommon.Market with Sandra Niessen, Alice Holloway, Zoe Gilbertson and Nick Evans - we'll discuss how commons-based models could help us reclaim our clothing culture. Thursday May 15th 🗣 TRANSCENDING THE ALT REICH IN AN AGE OF COLLAPSE & RENEWAL with NAFEEZ AHMED The far-right is resurgent. The United States has been taken over by a technology oligarchy with a technofascist agenda to supercharge hyper-capitalism and fracture democracies. Yet this dangerous moment also offers an unprecedented possibility space for radical transformation. By understanding the rise of the alt-reich in terms of a “planetary phase shift” we can create strategies to defeat it. Friday May 16th 👥 WHAT NARRATIVES ARE NEEDED IN THESE TURBULENT TIMES? with MARSHALL GANZ We continue the theme of how to counter the far right with Harvard Professor Marshall Ganz. In this interactive afternoon session, designed for activists, organisers and communicators, Marshall will first take us through his groundbreaking approach to public narrative. We'll then break into small groups for discussion, before coming back together to collectively explore the deeper stories we need to tell. Friday May 16th, 5-11pm 🍸 FRIDAY DRINKS Our weekly bar night will start earlier this week at 5pm for participants at the daytime workshop and anyone else who'd like to come. Celebrate the launch of the Handbook of Degrowth with us at the Islington Climate Centre! The Routledge Handbook of Degrowth is a long-waited review of the degrowth movement. To celebrate its launch, the book’s editors Anitra Nelson @anitradaviesnelson and Vincent Liegey are coming to the @islington_climate_centre in North London for a reading and panel discussion with Sandra Niessen of Fashion Act Now, who contributed a chapter to the book, ‘Defining Defashion’.  Sunday, 18th May, 5.30-8pm, Islington Climate Centre, London Readings of excerpts will be followed by a panel discussion on the degrowth movement and its relation to the concept of defashion, facilitated by Sara Arnold @sara.k.arnold.
