When I started Our Elements, I hoped to find a way to help my local community connect with the natural world, and I always wanted to expand that vision. As I have spent more time exploring Boulder, CO, I have learned about the amazing work that organizations in Boulder are leading to support the Latino and broader Boulder communities across the Colorado Front Range. Last year, I had the opportunity to participate as a volunteer educator, and I know that this year OE wants to play a bigger role in supporting the A La Montana Con La Familia event. We are very grateful and honored to our community partners for allowing us to help support the 4th annual ALMCLF. Our Elements will be leading one of the more lesson/ workshops along side Boulder County and Latino Outdoors called Senderos Seguros / Safe Trails.

#ourelements #ALMCLF #boulder #outdooreducation #bilingualeducation taken in Boulder, Colorado by @ourelements__

We’ve been exploring streams, ponds, and creeks across the Hudson River watershed with our nets & seine nets, and look who we found: a spottail shiner, a golden shiner, a young striped bass, a killifish, a white perch, and a crayfish.

Fun fact: white perch aren’t actually perch. They’re cousins of the striped bass, and both belong to the temperate bass family.
Every waterway that feeds the Hudson is full of life just beneath the surface.

Four days. Four elements. One amazing week at White Plains Public Library.

When we teamed up with the @whiteplainslibrary team to dream up “Earth, Wind, Fire & Zombies,” we knew we wanted something that felt like an adventure, and not a class/lecture. Their creativity set the stage, and we brought it to life with a curriculum built around Earth living skills you can use in the forest and in urban spaces.

Kids opened with a zombie-apocalypse water crisis, sketching their own survival filtration plans before learning real techniques (purification tablets, gravity systems, and more) and building their own filters by hand.

From there, we learned to wrap an ankle and build an improvised gurney from everyday items, strike sparks with a ferro rod with safety support from the White Plains Fire Department, and finish with hands-on learning about animal pelts, cordage, and fiber braiding.

Imaginative storytelling and Earth living skills will merge at a community gathering space. There is no single approach to outdoor education, and when a library partners with an outdoor education program to integrate Earth living skills with creativity, the results can be transformative

Thank you, WPPL and WPFD @whiteplainsfirefighters , for an unforgettable week!

In July, after supporting A La Montaña Con La Familia outside Boulder, CO, serving the Latino Community of the Colorado Front Range, I had the opportunity to spend several days camping in Wyoming’s Medicine Bow National Forest to celebrate @leidyoutdoors' birthday. I’ve been to Wyoming before to visit Yellowstone, but this trip let me explore a different part of the state with a whole different set of vibes. Before this trip, I had never heard of this region of Wyoming, but it definitely didn’t disappoint. If you’ve never considered visiting Southern Wyoming, I highly recommend it.

In 2021 , I had the opportunity to visit Joshua Tree National Park. Coming from the East Coast, it was an alien environment. Giant boulder piles, twisted trees reaching in every direction, wide open sky, and a stillness and heat that felt almost tangible. It felt like stepping onto another planet.

But this incredible landscape has an uncertain future. Rising temps are shrinking Joshua tree habitat fast, wildfires (deserts aren’t built for fire), and development keeps chipping away at the desert landscape they call home. Some studies say the park could lose most of its Joshua trees by the end of the century.

The world can feel like a big place, but it’s important to remember we are all much more connected than we think. If you have a calling and the opportunity to visit this region of the USA, I would say it’s well worth it. Thank you to all the local organizations and people working to protect our desert spaces.

Did you know Eastern Red Cedar isn’t actually a true cedar? In this video, I’m talking about this incredible tree, from the irony of its name to why its aromatic wood has been used to keep bugs out of furniture for generations, plus how I use the bark to make tinder bundles for my classes.
Thank you to @leidyoutdoors for helping to film share about Juniperus virginiana and thanks to @scenichudson for stewarding such a great natural space to explore.

As educators, we’re usually the ones teaching. On August 29th, I and another educator from the OCWA team got to be students, learning and refreshing our skills alongside a room full of other passionate educators.

A day out on the river was a great reminder of how important it is to keep teaching our communities about our waterways, and how lucky we are to live alongside a river as unique as the Mahicantuck, known today as the Hudson.

Thank you to the team who led the workshop @nysdec @columbialamontearth and to @ocwa_conservation_education for the opportunity for me to attend. Excited to be apart of the OCWA Conservation Educator team, with OE supporting select field trips this season.

Late summer through fall (roughly August to October) is peak hatchling season here. Turtles lay their eggs between late May and July, and after 9 to 12 weeks underground, the babies emerge and make their way to water.

If you see one crossing, slow down and give them room. A few seconds of caution can mean the difference between a turtle reaching the water or not.

Let’s stay mindful of our friends from the natural world, they were here long before the roads were.
