The Beaches level up again.

💿 The Beaches: No Hard Feelings @thebeachesband

They’ve got that rare gift for turning chaos into a singalong. The attitude’s sharp, but the heart’s still right there on the sleeve.

Released in 2025, it’s punchy alt-rock with pop-bright hooks and after-hours energy. It sounds like the morning-after debrief with your best mate, equal parts messy and clear-eyed. There’s also fan lore that a lot of these songs were shaped on the road — tightened up live before they were locked in.

The record where Pearl Jam stop chasing hype and hit harder.

💿 Pearl Jam: Vs. @pearljam

Pearl Jam thrive when the pressure’s on and the amps are up. This is them sounding locked-in, tense, and properly alive.

Released in 1993, it’s a leaner, rougher punch than the debut — more bite, less gloss, all nerve. The songs move like a band fighting for space, with hooks that still feel bruised. It’s often said they intentionally scaled back promo around this era, letting the gigs and the record do the talking.

A fantastic album that was played far too little on the radio.

💿 Garbage: Beautiful Garbage @garbage

Garbage always sound like they’re hacking pop from the inside. Shirley Manson’s voice is pure steel wrapped in velvet.

Released in 2001, it swerves between sleek electro-rock, glam bite and bruised balladry without losing the thread. It’s glossy on the surface, but there’s grit underneath — the kind that keeps pulling you back in. A story that follows the record is that Manson chronicled the making of it online as it happened, long before it was normal.

This week was David Gilmour’s 80th birthday, one of the most distinctive guitarists in music history. From Pink Floyd’s most atmospheric moments to solos that still stop people in their tracks, his sound is unmistakable.

From their beginnings in Cambridge to becoming one of the most acclaimed and highest-selling bands in music history, Pink Floyd reshaped progressive rock with a sound that was ambitious, atmospheric and instantly recognisable. With landmark albums, major hall of fame honours and a lasting influence on generations of artists, their story is far bigger than any one era.

The record that turns krautrock into pure weather.

💿 Can: Future Days

Released in 1973, it’s warm, tidal and strangely weightless, motorik pulse softened into something almost ambient. Put it on and the room seems to breathe, all shimmer, drift and sudden clarity. It was recorded at the band’s Inner Space Studio, a converted cinema in Weilerswist.

He ditched the rules and doubled down on proper rock again.

💿 Bryan Adams: Roll With the Punches

Adams still writes like the chorus is the whole point. It’s big-hearted, straight-talking, and built for singing with the windows down.

Released in 2025, this one leans into crunching guitars and stadium-sized hooks without feeling stuck in the past. There’s a warm, lived-in confidence here — punchy when it needs to be, tender when it counts. It’s also his first full-length set of new material released on his own Bad Records label.

The record that kicked the doors in on hard rock.

💿 Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin

Four players, one new language: blues turned to electricity. They hit with swagger, grit, and that uncanny “born loud” chemistry.

Released in 1969, it’s raw but strangely assured, like a band already mid-flight. Riffs bite, drums punch, and the folk-blues corners make the heavy bits feel even heavier. A story that follows the record is that it was captured fast in late-night sessions at London’s Olympic Studios, before the legend had even settled.

Junk Culture is the moment Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark stopped arguing with their own instincts and started weaponising them.

Coming off the baffling, brilliant chill of Dazzle Ships, the band didn’t so much “sell out” as stage a controlled detonation: take the same art-school curiosity, then bolt it to choruses built for radios, clubs, and anyone who’d ever danced without needing to justify it. McCluskey even framed the title as a manifesto for that pivot, an admission that pop, “junk food” and videogames have “merit”, and that you don’t have to believe something is “artistically right” to enjoy it.

The songs were written and tracked across a patchwork of rooms — from Highland Studios in Inverness to The Chapel in Lincolnshire, then Mayfair in London, AIR Studios, ICP in Brussels, and Wisseloord Studios.

The sleeve was designed by Peter Saville and his studio, it leans into postmodern flourish, which is the kind of art direction that says: yes, this is pop, and yes, it knows what it’s doing.
