Starting off the week like a 🐻‍❄️

When the colder temperatures start to settle in and there is less risk of overheating, male polar bears will spend more energy and time hanging out and sparring with other bears to hone their skills.

One of the things at the top of our Japan bucket list was to go look for the Oriental White Stork or “Kounotori”.

These magnificent birds went extinct in the wild in Japan during the 1970s, and thanks to the incredible reintroduction efforts from local communities, the Kounotori are making a comeback with their first chick having fledged into the wild in 2007 and a current population of around 350.

We felt so very lucky to have been able to learn about them, and watch them thriving once again in their natural habitat.

The one and only! That’s right, we have just one breeding species of hummingbird here in eastern North America, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

We were greeted by more than a dozen of these incredible hummers on our last tour, and it was so cool to watch them foraging for nectar on the feeders and native flowers in the fields @birds.canada , getting ready for their long and treacherous migratory journeys all the way to Central America.

Males are known for their bright red/ruby throats, but most of the ones we saw were females and maybe a few juvenile males (not sporting their colorful throats yet). Interestingly enough, adult males usually start heading south in early August.

Always such a treat to see these fast, hovering beauties and even though it’s the only species that breeds in our neck of the woods, they occupy the largest range of any North American hummingbird isn’t that cool?!

Yesterday’s birding tour at Long Point was absolutely amazing! The weather held up, the birds were really putting on a show for us, and we got to share it with a small group, which left room for a more personalized experience!

We got to visit some really cool spots and spent a little bit more time at one of our favourite, @longpointbirds where we got to see the team banding some truly amazing birds, what a treat!

We left with hearts full, cameras loaded with photos, and all in all 67 bird species in total! Yee-haw! Can’t wait for the next one!

What’s the most exciting bird you’ve seen during this #fallmigration ? Tell us in the comments 🙌

For us, it’s been a small flock of 5 Red-necked Phalaropes (lifers!) here in Southern Ontario. They usually favor open ocean during their migration, so it was very cool to see them inland here on our lakes.

They were on a very dangerous spot right next to the highway, so it was kind of a quick in & out situation. This shitty video is all we could manage to do lol.
