This past weekend, I got to join Pedro and Ximena of @outdoor.commute for a guided birding tour around @presquilepp. It was a gorgeous day with 47 different species seen, including 5 lifers for me! Seeing 3 Merlins in one day was also a huge highlight.

This was my first trip out to the park with my new 28-400 mm zoom lens and thankfully some of the birds we saw held up their end of the deal and posed nicely for my camera. I think I’ll have fun with this one.

There’s something special about seeing familiar faces show up on the trail again and again. Today, we’re celebrating the folks who have become part of the flock. The Bird Homies who have joined us for multiple outings, supported what we’re building, brought others into the community, and continue to grow on their birding journey.

Maybe you came to your first outing knowing a few birds. Maybe you were still figuring out binoculars, learning field marks, or wondering why we all suddenly stopped walking because someone heard a bird in the bushes. But somewhere along the way, something clicked. You started noticing more. Listening more closely. Asking questions. Recognizing birds by sight or sound. Paying attention to habitats. Building your own relationship with the natural world. And that’s what this journey is about.

The Bird Homies is more than birding. It’s about community, connection, learning together, taking up space, and creating a place where we can experience the outdoors on our own terms. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for growing with us. Thank you for supporting the flock. Thank you for helping make this community what it is.

Our First One! 🐦🍻🌮

What a way to kick things off! A huge thank you to everyone who came out this past Saturday for Birds, Brews, & Tacos, the inaugural event of The Bird Homies Bird Club, at Lower Arroyo Seco Park and Trails in Pasadena,CA. Whether you came to bird, learn, meet new people, enjoy some brews and tacos, or simply spend some time outside with your Bird Homies, we’re so grateful you showed up and helped make our first event one to remember.

This was just the beginning.

We have so much planned for the rest of 2026, and we’re excited to keep creating spaces where we can learn together, connect with nature, build community, and take up space in the birding world. We hope you’ll join us for the next one, and the many, many more to come. This flock is just getting started.

Thank you for showing up. Thank you for being part of the beginning. And thank you for helping us build something special.

Over the past six weeks, we've traveled across California without ever leaving the state.

We've stood beside wetlands alive with migrating birds. Walked through grasslands that many overlook. Stepped beneath the canopies of woodlands. Wandered through resilient chaparral. Discovered wildness in our cities. And finally, realized that some of the most important habitat might be right outside our own windows.

Each landscape taught us the same lesson: Birds don't exist apart from their habitats. Every song, every nest, every migration, and every generation of birds depends on healthy places to live. But this series was never just about birds. It was about building a relationship with the land.

Because when we know a place, we begin to care about it. When we care about it, we're more likely to protect it. And when we protect it, we're investing in a future where both people and wildlife can thrive. Thank you for slowing down, learning with us, asking questions, and exploring California's incredible habitats.

This may be the end of one series, but it's the beginning of something even more exciting. Next week, we're shifting our focus from where birds live to how we learn to notice them. Because birding isn't about checking birds off a list. It's about building relationships with the land, the birds, and each other.

This week we had the exciting opportunity to bring scientific research and community outreach together.
In collaboration with @yorkuniversity , PhD student Simon Tkaczyk and our team banded the two Osprey chicks currently nesting at the Port Rowan pier.

Simon’s research investigates how Persistent Organic Pollutants influence Osprey parental care, chick provisioning, and sibling competition throughout the Great Lakes region. To help answer these questions, a nest camera has been installed monitor behaviour, and a small blood sample was collected from each chick during the banding process.

We were thrilled to see such a fantastic turnout from the community to witness science in action. Opportunities to observe wildlife research up close are rare, and it was wonderful to share this experience with so many enthusiastic supporters.

We will continue to monitor the Ospreys progress and look forward to sharing future updates.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to support the project, and a special thanks to Dave and Kate from Norfolk Electric for providing the lift that made the banding possible!
