INTRODUCING OUR DANCE IN A DAY OPENING ACT:

ZEST Creative performing ‘Everything you need is here.”

ZEST Creative is a dance and music collective featuring contemporary dance artists and musicians who have been performing in Toronto since 2019. Collaboration is the foundation of everything that we create, and we aim to challenge the conventions of our respective art forms by blending our two worlds together. We’ve performed in various festivals and events in Toronto, including presenting two full-length works in the Toronto Fringe Festival: Love Notes (2019) and Between Root and Bloom (2022). Additionally we have performed at Dockside Dances (2023), The Garage (2022), Bloom Fest (2021), Entwined Together by Playground Project (2020), Your Dance Fest (2019), and various Artery events. We produced a showcase at Annette Studios in 2023 called Zesty Nights where we presented a work created from our residency at Woodland Farms on Salt Spring Island. Our current members are Hannah Barstow, Julien Bradley-Combs, Eva Connelly-Miller, Mary Patsiazis, and María Riaño.

Get insight into Sofía Ontiveros and María Riaño’s process for Ojala… by joining us for morning class.

Come for a fully embodied contemporary dance class, with a warm up, center, across the floor and phrase work. We will focus on core engagement through improvisational tasks and set movement exercises, finding dynamic movement shifts, from soft releases to fast arrivals back into our center. We will teach a final phrase to apply these movement techniques while performing!

Excited to introduce lead ‘Dance in a Day’ choreographers, María Riaño and Sofía Ontiveros.

Together they will lead us through their process; exploring partner work in the world of release, restriction in high energy and full embodied movement. Seeking to discover the parallels and intersections of contemporary dance with the cultural influences that have shaped and surrounded them.

MARIA RIANO continues her career as a professional dancer and instructor in parallel to her experience in marketing. She is an emerging dancer, choreographer and instructor in Toronto. She began her training in Bogota, Colombia where she was born. Maria has had the chance to work in projects/ companies such as Citadel + Compagnie’s Citadel Dance Mix 2023 and Night Shift 2022 co-produced with Fall for Dance North, CAMINOS 2023 Festival by Aluna Theatre, Nostos Collective, Foolish Operations, The Bentway, Frog in Hand and Angela Blumberg. María draws inspiration in her art from constant investigation, the eagerness of life and human connection. This, as a result, is where Maria’s movement derives from, a place that is open-minded and curious.

SOFIA ONTIVEROS is a queer, genderfluid, Mexican dance artist and choreographer based in Tkaronto, Ontario. They trained in Mexico for 10 years in various dance styles including ballet, jazz, jazz funk, tap, contemporary, lyrical, hip hop, breakdance, locking, popping, and whacking. Sofía is a 2021 graduate from Toronto Metropolitan University ‘s The Creative School BFA Dance Program, where they trained in ballet, jazz, modern, improvisation, and contemporary techniques. The TMU faculty chose them for the Lipson Family Endowment Award for an Emerging Choreographer. Their most recent work Ojalá…, was showcased as a work in progress at CAMINOS 2023 by Aluna Theatre, and as a finished work at The Citadel Dance Mix 2023 by The Citadel + Compagnie.

ANOTHER ONE

Coming back for our third iteration, bringing to you: new choreographers, a new venue, and the same dance-filled chaos!!

Dance in a Day is an amazing opportunity for people who want to: participate in creative process, challenge themselves physically and mentally, connect with peers and professionals in the dance world, and get documentation of their performance.

In this day-long intensive, lead artists Sofía Ontiveros and María Riano will invite us into their choreographic process and by the end of the day, we will have a new work ready to be presented at Native Earth’s Aki Studio theatre.

softanimals is straddling independence and attachment. Living in a universe where we are confronted by the lifespan of a pattern and how we enable it to continue or find freedom from it.

softanimals was developed at the Woodland Farm Artist Residency.

Working in Uncertainty
~ Practising performance ~
This workshop plays with agency, togetherness and uncertainty through an improvisational group structure. Uncertainty is a rich, creative state without ego. Together we will play with ways to cultivate it intentionally. The structure of this practice encourages a deliberate degree of miscommunication. We aim to harness this chaos to let unexpected things appear and seek a generative state together that hinges on play and presence.

We will practise kind disobedience. We will touch base with the fullness of ourselves, shake things loose, take turns witnessing, and attune to our impulses, to each other and to those watching. Most importantly we will practise unconditional support for ourselves and each other.

Meet Dance in a Day choreographer Jessie Garon!

Jessie Garon (she/they) is a queer performer and choreographer working in contemporary dance theatre. Originally from a homesteaded family farm in Alberta, she is now based in Tkaronto/Toronto. She is a graduate of Dance Arts Institute after which she interned for Ate9 Dance Company (Los Angeles) under Artistic Director Danielle Agami studying Gaga Movement Language daily.

Since 2014, she has participated primarily in collaborative processes blending performative forms. Her work incites the potential of dance virtuosity, rigor and spectacle as materials to craft spirited, athletic and abstract dance theatre.

She has worked with artists such as Brandy Leary/Anandam Dance Theatre, Jennifer Dallas/Kemi Contemporary Dance Projects, Serge Bennathan, Lemi Ponifasio/MAU (New Zealand), Clarice Lima/Futura (Brazil) and Sara Porter.

Garon is the founder and Artistic Director of Vazari Arts. As a creator she is nominated for the 2024 Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prizes. Her work has been shown across Canada, including the Theatre Centre (ON), Pumphouse Theatre (AB), Refinery Theatre (SK), Édifice Wilder Espace Danse (QC) and Salle Bernard-LeBlanc (NB). Her newest work ‘everything i wanted to tell you’ premieres February 5th as part the Citadel + Compagnie season.
