POSTS STORIES REELS

Hey Duende Duders! How are you??? How’s your fall been going? I hope it’s been (pumpkin) spicy, cozily (and thrillingly 😈) spooky and just autumnally awesome in every way. Firstly, I’d like to apologize for the months-long dearth of duende discussing. Life has been stressful, to say the least, as I’m sure it’s been for all of you. BUT the wait will have been well worth it because my 13th guest is none other than legendary expert artist of all imagined realms - human, wild, fantastical, spiritual and beyond - the magical, mythmaker of my weirdo writer woman dreams - O-Lan Jones!! @ojones777 🥰 I’ve been wanting O-Lan on Duende Discussions since I was first dreaming it up because whether it is through her riveting performances as an actress and singer, or as a primitive, provocative opera composer, theatre director, visual artist and more, Mz. Jones is a stunningly present channeler of emotion and truth, aka, the duende-iest of duende stirrers!

And stir up duende we did! In our vibrant convo, we discuss how growing up encouraged to be freely creative in her own way has impacted her expressive art today, her natural aptitude for distinct rhythms in experimental opera-making, and the role that impulse plays in her creative conjurings.

We also break down the challenge and gift of performing poetic words, how to most authentically play a ghost bride (!), and why her epic mythic opera Iceland is bringing back yearning ☺️O-Lan also relays some fun behind-the-scenes stories from her brilliantly playful 1993 indie movie Shelf Life, and how its recent resurgence in the cinephile scene sparked an exciting new project. And in true Duende Discussions emo authenticity, I may have cried a little confessing how a note she gave me while directing my play about whale singer songwriters changed my life forever 🥲

O-Lan’s impact on me as an artist, creative experimenter and appreciator of our wonderfully weird world is hard to articulate, but this fun convo is a start 🤗 Links in bio & stories to listen! Happy Spooky Season and follow O-Lan and her company @overtoneind for updates on all her cool art happenings 🎶🎭

Please join us and @primavoceemergingartists for their Fall concert series with @hannah.verduzco on Friday, Oct 23rd - and be treated to the world premiere of a NEWly commissioned aria by our Artistic Director @ojones777:

LA SIGUANABA ‼️

She writes, “This is a theatricalization drawn from the poems of Janel Pineda. Throughout the piece the singer is alternating between conjuring up, and becoming La Siguanaba, a mythical creature of folklore in El Salvador. She is a powerful, dangerous and charismatic being who seduces men and avenges wrondgdoing, appearing to them as both beautiful and hideous.”

FREE TICKETS avail while they last at pvea-verduzco.eventbrite.com ☮️

We can’t wait to see soprano Hannah Verduzco and pianist Lucy Yates perform CANCIONES NUEVAS Y ROMANTICAS, featuring this world premiere by O-Lan Jones alongside works by Daniel Catàn, Edna Longoria, Maria Griever, and Peter Lieberson! by @overtoneind

"Jemima," a new music chamber opera with a libretto by @junecarryl Carryl, tells the story of Nancy Green, the first woman to take on the role of Aunt Jemima for the pancake company in the 1890s.

The score imports racist music from the era into the 21st century and messes with it. What you're hearing is a 5/4 and minor version of "Dixie," leading into Nancy's first song. There's also a "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" in there so mangled you don't even know that's where it came from, and an old cakewalk. None of these are things I ever thought I'd be doing in my own work, but they are most decidedly appropriate for the telling of this story.
It premiered as a film from @overtoneind Industries in May 2021, directed by O-Lan Jones, recorded at home during the pandemic — every part alone, to a click track, edited together by @fahad.siadat Siadat. @the_abdou_family Patterson Abdou and @scotttgraff Graff sing the two main characters, with @joannalynnjacobs Lynn-Jacobs, Ashley Faatoalia, and @tallandbassy Hayden as the trio chorus, and @brghtwrk Newmusic in the ensemble.

While there is dark humor in this work, it is decidedly not a comedy. They tried to take her name from her. We wanted to give it back just a little.
