The Flava is out today! 🕺💃

This was an idea I started early last year and it’s fun to look back on how the track has evolved since then. It was originally meant to be a house track with a funky bassline and chopped up rap vocal, but a period of listening to a lot of old-school garage inspired me to take the idea in a different direction.

I came across a few tracks that I loved that combined 2-step rhythms with elements of funk. "Funk Power" by The Godfather and the Bump & Flex remix of the James Brown classic "Funk On a Roll” are records that were a particularly big inspiration. The bass guitar and rap vocal samples from the original house version remained a staple of the song but were reworked around garage rhythms. The result is "The Flava"!

I had a lot of fun making it and hope you enjoy listening :)

You can check it out on Bandcamp and Soundcloud. Links are in my bio 🔗

Syncopate Presents: Benny Ill (Horsepower Productions)

As summer ends, we're getting darker for our 2nd installment. We're honoured to be joined by Benny Ill for an extended set.

Through his work as part of Horsepower Productions, solo and other collaborations spanning UK Garage, Dubstep, Techno and more, he has has inspired a whole generation of producers and lovers of dark syncopated music, which is ever evolving. That reach can be seen with the current repress of the seminal Dub War - Murderous Style [Tempa] 12" 25 years after it's original release.

We look forward to you joining us on Saturday 31st October in the new Next Door Records 2 Red Room to hear the sounds of Benny Ill. Event flyer for event Syncopate Presents: Benny Ill (Horsepower Productions) on October 31st. The background has a dark, gritty texture featuring a large, stylised, pixelated font spelling out 'SYNCOPATE'. In the center, a distorted, holographic glitch effect reveals shimmering rainbow, blue, and orange colors with thin geometric perspective lines forming a tunnel shape. The main white and gray text block reads: Syncopate, next door records two, October 31, 8pm to 2am. Lineup text below reads: Benny Ill (Horsepower Productions) (extended set), Ovrtic, ARIA, and Alex, from Deep. taken in BLAST Records by @ovrtic_

A funky 2-stepper for you. My next single, The Flava, will be out soon.

Here’s a clip of me giving it a spin @glowinghollow festival.

Had a lot of fun experimenting with this funk + garage combo. Not found loads of tracks that blend the two but the ones I came across were a big inspiration. If you know any gems please send them my way! taken in Ovar, Portugal by @ovrtic_

Meet Ovrtic
The soul behind a set of UK-rooted bass music featuring swung percussion and global rhythms.

Filipe first connected with the multi talented Ovrtic, upon visiting the great Alex Lowe, at Four Tet gig in London. After discussing Glowing Hollow in an after party, Ovrtic's presence became mandatory.

London-based and shaped by a mixed heritage that spans continents, Ovrtic pulls from a global palette of musical flavors, spicing their instrumental dishes with catchy vocal textures and swung rhythms. With his debut release, "Eyes On The Prize," Ovrtic has garnered fans and the support from Ben UFO and Loris.

Beyond the decks, he's the founder of Cherry Jamz and co-runs Syncopate Sound, two London communities built to champion emerging artists and lift up the next wave of UK talent.

Expect texture. Expect musical layers that combine with the canopy.
