How much do you know about silver?

Throughout history, silver has fascinated and inspired people. It is durable, malleable, conductive and anti-microbial, and therefore often used in decorative arts, medicine and even in the day-to-day electronics that we now use. But silver’s appeal and importance goes beyond its mere physical properties.

Beautifully crafted silver objects have long been used for the precious artefacts and rituals of our society: family traditions often include silver spoons or baby bangles; silver maces are used in ceremonies in parliament or universities and silver vessels in various religious rituals.

We’re delighted to welcome Glasshouse Contemporary to the Own Art network, and particularly excited to showcase the work of Elizabeth Loveday, who is newly represented by the gallery.⁠

Elizabeth is an artist from Cornwall whose work traverses the boundaries of fine art, illustration and craft. She is from a long line of creative craftswomen who have harnessed alternative materials to create works full of narrative - her mother a wooden automata maker, and her grandmother a ceramicist. Her characters are loosely drawn from Cornish folk tales and her own life, weaving stories rooted in and reflective of her community.⁠
