Hugo Canoilas (1977) is a Portuguese artist based in Vienna and New York whose practice expands painting into installation, sculpture, performance and collaborative work. Drawing on art history, ecology and post-humanist thought, he creates immersive environments that question anthropocentric ways of seeing and explore more empathetic relationships between humans, materials and other forms of life.
Educated at ESAD in Caldas da Rainha and the Royal College of Art in London, Canoilas has presented major projects at Serralves, mumok in Vienna and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. His work has also been included in leading international institutions and biennials, including the 30th São Paulo Biennial. Recipient of the 2020 Kapsch Contemporary Art Prize, he is a distinctive voice at the intersection of contemporary painting, ecological imagination and collective practice.
