Music is one of the most powerful forms of art, and classical music plays a fundamental role within this universe. Can classical music foster social cohesion, creativity and environmental sustainability? The answer is not a simple one. Classical music does not transform society merely because we attend a concert. But it can help cultivate more attentive human beings - people who are better able to listen and engage with complexity - and no profound social transformation can take place without these capacities. It also teaches us how to inhabit contradiction. Within a single composition, tension and lightness, dissonance and harmony, darkness and light can coexist. It also teaches us how to inhabit contradiction. Complexity is not eliminated: it can be traversed and understood. It is also there that creativity develops.
.
Back to the Future continues.
Save the date. More soon.

Poderá a música clássica promover a coesão social, a criatividade e a sustentabilidade ambiental?

It was beautiful Eneida. Thank you.
Yesterday, Eneida Lombe Tavares launched Back to the Future, a Terrafoundation project. Following an expedition and materials laboratory in the Carvalhal dunes beside the Atlantic, where participants gathered pine needles, she gave a public talk at the Terrafoundation Pavilion about the development of her practice as a designer and artisan across geographies as diverse as Mozambique, Cape Verde and Portugal, and her engagement with this natural material, so abundant within the Comporta ecosystem.
Back to the Future explores the relationship between craft, contemporary design, classical music and ecology, with education, training and capacity-building as its central pillars. Through residencies, laboratories and processes of learning and co-creation, the project will advance Terrafoundation’s medium-term ambition to foster a skilled community of artisans at Carvalhal, rooted in the territory’s own natural resources.
The next event will take place on 7 November. More soon.
