Hello 👋🏾 fam, yesterday we had a workshop in Birmingham, UK 🇬🇧 with my really good frriends of @oya_batucada and @someoneatthedoorsamba 💪🏾🥁💪🏾🥁

This is my third time with them and we had so much fun 🤩 we had 4 hours workshop and were able to share different grooves and breaks to add to their new repertoire 🙌🏾🙌🏾

It’s always nice to come see them all as I always get lots of love ❤️ and respect from both groups, I really appreciate you all for having me once again.

Want to give especial thanx to my friend @laura.shakes for taking care of me and always ready to support me, I appreciate you amiga 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

✨ BIRMINGHAM — ONE WEEK AGO with @oya_batucada and @northsomersetsamba 🥁💛

One week ago, Birmingham gave us layers of joy, rhythm, wisdom and ancestral energy.
Our drumming and dance masterclasses brought generations together through Samba Reggae; children, adults, experienced players and people discovering these rhythms side by side. An intergenerational space where knowledge travelled through drums, bodies, smiles and shared experience.

🥁 @paimmarivaldo , master percussionist from @blocoileaiye , brought the wisdom, musical language and living legacy of Bahia.
🥁 @mac_dende , Dendê Nation’s Musical Director, connected those ancestral grooves with the work we continue building here in the UK.
💃🏾 @marianarpinho brought movement into the conversation, connecting dance, rhythm, ancestry and collective celebration.
And Birmingham responded with pure JOY! 💛

A very special thank you to Fiona, Shelley, John Carmichael, Rory, John Richards, Oya Batucada & North Somerset Samba, and to everyone who helped make this gathering possible. Some of these beautiful photos were also kindly shared with us — thank you for capturing those moments of connection, concentration and absolute joy. 📸

Pure Bahia joy, one city at a time. 🇧🇷🥁💃🏿
Over the last two days, more than 100 participants have joined us as Ijó Ìdílé – Ancestral Dance travelled from Cornwall, in partnership with @dakadoumsamba , to Birmingham with the incredible Oya Batucada family.

The fresh images for yesterdays sessions only happened due to the dedication of Fiona, Shelley, John Carmichael, Alison. A heartfelt thank you to and the whole @oya_batucada team for creating such a welcoming space where generations came together through rhythm, movement and joy. This is exactly what Dendê Nation is about: building bridges between communities, cultures and people through the living traditions of Bahia.
Now, the mini tour reaches its final stop...

This weekend, the heartbeat of Ilê Aiyê arrives in the UK.

Join Marivaldo Paim – Musical Director of the legendary Afro-Brazilian bloco Ilê Aiyê – alongside Mariana Pinho, as they share the rhythms, movement and history behind Samba Reggae through three unmissable masterclasses, presented as part of the Dendê Nation – Rooted & Rising: Ijó Ìdílé project.

🎶 From Birmingham to Notting Hill! 🥁✨

We’re thrilled to welcome @oya_batucada as part of this year’s Ijó Ìdílé – Rooted & Rising journey.

For over three decades, Oya Batucada have been bringing the powerful rhythms of Brazil to the Midlands, sharing the energy of Samba Reggae, Samba no Pé and Samba Funk with audiences across the UK. Their performances are a celebration of community, participation and the unmistakable spirit of Salvador da Bahia.

This year, we’re excited to strengthen our partnership through a special masterclass with @paimmarivaldo , Musical Director of @blocoileaiye , alongside @marianarpinho , and our musical Director @mac_dende before welcoming Oya Batucada to join the Dendê Nation family on the streets of Notting Hill Carnival.

Hi, I’m Jai Mackenzie, and I’m part of the MultiLX team at @uniofwarwick 👋

Outside of my research, one of the things that brings me the most joy is playing with my community samba band, Oyá Batucada, here in Birmingham (UK). In this video, I share a glimpse into our rehearsals - here you’ll see (and hear!) some of the amazing people I play with, along with the different instruments that make up the bateria.

Samba is a musical tradition with deep roots in Afro-Brazilian history and culture, emerging from enslaved African communities in Brazil, particularly in Bahia. It is shaped by African diasporic rhythms, resistance, celebration and collective expression. Samba has long been connected to community life, social movements and public space, and it continues to evolve through a range of styles and regional traditions.

As a British band, we’re very conscious that this music doesn’t belong to us. We work hard to approach samba with respect, learning from Brazilian maestres, acknowledging samba’s histories and cultures, and understanding ourselves as learners rather than owners of the tradition.

What I love most about Oyá Batucada is the combination of joyful, powerful music, the warmth and generosity of the people, and the band’s commitment to giving back - through community events, charitable workshops, and by actively welcoming new members, whatever their background or level of experience. Being part of this collective reminds me how creativity, rhythm and togetherness can be grounding, energising and deeply meaningful. 🥁❤️
