✨ BIRMINGHAM — ONE WEEK AGO with @oya_batucada and @northsomersetsamba 🥁💛

One week ago, Birmingham gave us layers of joy, rhythm, wisdom and ancestral energy.
Our drumming and dance masterclasses brought generations together through Samba Reggae; children, adults, experienced players and people discovering these rhythms side by side. An intergenerational space where knowledge travelled through drums, bodies, smiles and shared experience.

🥁 @paimmarivaldo , master percussionist from @blocoileaiye , brought the wisdom, musical language and living legacy of Bahia.
🥁 @mac_dende , Dendê Nation’s Musical Director, connected those ancestral grooves with the work we continue building here in the UK.
💃🏾 @marianarpinho brought movement into the conversation, connecting dance, rhythm, ancestry and collective celebration.
And Birmingham responded with pure JOY! 💛

A very special thank you to Fiona, Shelley, John Carmichael, Rory, John Richards, Oya Batucada & North Somerset Samba, and to everyone who helped make this gathering possible. Some of these beautiful photos were also kindly shared with us — thank you for capturing those moments of connection, concentration and absolute joy. 📸

And the journey continues… some of this wonderful crew will be joining us at Notting Hill Carnival 2026, strengthening an ever-growing Samba Reggae network connecting communities, generations and places through rhythm. 🇧🇷🇬🇧#
From Bahia to Birmingham, and onwards to @nhcarnivalldn the ancestral beat keeps travelling. 🌍🥁

Over the last two days, more than 100 participants have joined us as Ijó Ìdílé – Ancestral Dance travelled from Cornwall, in partnership with @dakadoumsamba , to Birmingham with the incredible Oya Batucada family.

The fresh images for yesterdays sessions only happened due to the dedication of Fiona, Shelley, John Carmichael, Alison. A heartfelt thank you to and the whole @oya_batucada team for creating such a welcoming space where generations came together through rhythm, movement and joy. This is exactly what Dendê Nation is about: building bridges between communities, cultures and people through the living traditions of Bahia.
Now, the mini tour reaches its final stop...

This weekend, Birmingham becomes a meeting point for the growing samba-reggae community.

A huge thank you to Kwaku and the incredible team at @oya_batucada for welcoming @mac_dende , @paimmarivaldo (@blocoileaiye ) and @marianarpinho for a special pre-Carnival day of samba-reggae drumming & dance in preparation for this year’s @nhcarnivalldn .

Every connection strengthens our community. By bringing together artists, groups and practitioners from across the UK and Brazil, we’re expanding the samba-reggae network through the exchange of knowledge, shared experiences and mutual support, while celebrating the traditions that inspire us all.

Strong networks create stronger communities. When we learn from one another, we keep these rhythms alive, open new pathways for collaboration and ensure samba-reggae continues to grow across generations and borders.

See you in Birmingham this weekend, ready to learn, play, dance and celebrate together! 🥁💚💛❤️

Had a super summer solstice with @fruitnutvillage!

I hosted my second solstice celebration event at Pebble Mill Forest Garden yesterday, and had the chance to perform my poetry again, which I'm incredibly grateful for.

Other gorgeous acts included @riffygal_29 with her newly published poetry book with FNV, Donna & Debjani with their beautiful Bengali Songs, Happy Feet dance school, @creaturesofthecosmos_ with fab electronica, and the amazing samba drumming squad @oya_batucada!

We had samosas and drinks provided by Rob & Derren. Thank you to everyone who made this event happen, happy summer (it is very hot). 🔥
